This place is cute, has more of a selection of oldies more than anything if you like that! I asked the worker how much something was and he painted at the sign with sarcasm and said "it says $5.00 and up", but it didn't have a price so I didn't know if it was $5 or a different amount! It was sarcastic with some rude undertones, he tried to be nicer after, but it kinda ruined my mood and experience! I generally look for country records when I look for vinyl, and Janie's did not have much. The vinyl section overall wasn't big at all, but I think if you are looking for something rare, it might be here. This looks like it mostly specializes in Tejano music, but I came in looking for country. There wasn't much, but the guy explained someone came in a few months ago and basically bought bought most of his country albums in one shot. read more

This seriously is a 5 star rated record shop with nothing but original pressings it seems like and let me tell you even the dollar bins have impressive quality. I got a original pressing of Marvin Gaye's "Let's get it on", Santana's "Abrazza", Temptations "do the Temptations" and the Cars "Heartbeat City" all original pressings all for 13 bucks! . Went here about a year ago and the lady there was annoying and rude, going on and on about her mother and the pandemic and kept pestering me about my "face covering," while I was trying to focus on flipping through a terrible selection of records. I finally just walked out as she had some choice words for me on the way out. She slammed the door and locked it behind me. I won't ever be back. I flew in for a quick visit with family and my dad brought me in to find a Ruben Naranjo album. Janie's did not disappoint. Great customer service, great finds and a nice reminder of what I love about my home town. This place is a must for anyone who collects vinyl. Specializes in musica espanola but there are a lot of cool English soul, rock, blues and classic rap Lps around at bargain prices. Records are in good shape from my sampling. First of all I consider it a great honor and privilege to be the first to review this truly hidden gem of the San Antonio music scene as far as Yelp is concerned. As a recent transplant via Lubbock in this charming city I was fortunate enough to be informed of a local radio station that has been in business for decades and has helped fuel a music scene that is uniquely Texan. KEDA 1540 was brought my attention by my roommate whom has lived in San Antonio since the 70s. KEDA has revived my former love of Tejano music and more specifically conjunto music which gave birth to this purely Texan art form. As a resident of other cities in Texas, I noticed that the Tejano format seemed to be dying away has a newer more "International" "regional Mexican" format became the favorite of National radio conglomerates. When I found out about KEDA, I quickly learned that the format was alive and well here in San Antonio. And being that this independent radio station did not have the same music as the conglomerates, the music would become more difficult to find in your local record shop (another dying institution) for your local Walmart or Best Buy. Here in comes Janie's Record Shop. After I called the radio station to ask about the song, I was recommended this store to find the music for which I had been longing. The location was tucked away on Bandera and by the painting of the accordion on the front window, I had known I was in the right place. As I walked in, I noticed a glass cabinet of CDs in it and a few other racks more CDs that were split up by category. The lady from behind the counter we had introduced herself as Becky, the daughter of Jamie had asked if I had needed any help. I pulled out my iPhone and played a recording that I had made from the radio. In about 10 seconds, she had quickly recognize the song and said, "I have that." She then proceeded to the back of the store and brought out a CD and played a copy of the same CD for me on a small radio that she had in the store. She the song and played it for me to make sure that it was what I have been looking for. She then asked if I had been looking for anything else and made a few other recommendations on the song that I had asked. I was so happy that I found the song and I did not notice he also had another room with records and tapes. If I wasn't with a friend I probably would've spent a good part of the afternoon looking at all of the music. I will definitely return and make an afternoon of it. read more

I heard about Janies Record Shop several years ago and I always wanted to visit but anytime I was in Texas, I was always in Austin with family. I'm from Los Angeles and record digging for Tejano stuff here in LA is almost non-existent. Anyway, I was in Texas on Labor Day weekend 2018 and I convinced a cousin of mine to take a trip down to San Antonio to check out Janies. I called before we took the road trip to make sure they were open and luckily they were! He said only until 2pm. So my cousin and I made our way down there. I was welcomed by Robert who is Janies son and also runs the record store with her. He was very nice and informative about all the stuff that they carried. I was in Tejano music heaven! I could have spent days in there going through everything! If you guys don't know, Janies is a STAPLE of Tejano music history in San Antonio. Robert and I were able to talk all things Tejano and he was teaching me and telling me stories of local and mainstream tejano artists of all eras. I walked out with a couple of records and CD's. Yes, they mostly cater to Tejano music fans but they do have a great selection of Soul/R&B, Oldies, and Rock music (Cassettes/CD/Records/8Tracks). There were definitely many gems there! Janie's Record Shop despite what may be implied is not for the average person who has rekindled their love for vinyl or the teen who has been introduced to the turntable. If you're looking for rock classics, 60's, 70's or 80's this is not the place for you. There are boxes of albums stored on the floor marked $1.00 or not at all. Before you have you heart set on something make sure you talk to the brother, the one sister has absolutely no knowledge of rock or pricing. One thing I found out at the register, if an album is not priced, it's $5.00 regardless of what box it came from BUT there is no signage indicating so. This place is for the Tejano, Conjunto loving folks; that's their niche! If you're looking for some good old fashioned rock, don't waste your time here! read more

Even though I feel the majority of this shop's collection of music is more for the generation before me, this store is in every sense of the word a real record shop! San Antonio is very fortunate to have a place like this to represent our vinyl scene. I absolutely love walking through the door and having that feeling as if I'm stepping into a part of San Antonio's living nostalgia, and that is exactly how it feels every time I walk into their store. The owners are very nice and obviously love music. That enthusiasm for music makes visiting them twice as nice. As a collector, I love thumbing through boxes of vinyl looking for gems and I have found many good old rock albums there at great prices. Their selection of 45s is flooded with great songs as well. I have yet to find a record store in SA with a better selection of 45s, hands down. If you like classic rock and tejano, this is the place for you. If you just like vinyl in general, there are plenty of gems hidden among the crates at Janie's and visiting at least once should be on your music lover's bucket list. read more

I'd give this place less than a star but it's not possible. Janie's record shop is all about hyping it up into something its not. .. unfortunately. It is not international, its all tejano music. I was really saddened after we drove from Eagle Pass and its nothing more than a rink e dink store I'd find on the streets of Mexico. I wished it was more and there was some selection other than tejano. Sorry Janie you get a thumbs down! Don't believe the hype people. Thanks. read more
