Goes to show you how often I trek downtown, I had no idea there was a used book store in the basement of the San Antonio Public Library! And what a cute book store it is. Genres are clearly signed, and the selection is actually pretty good for their size. I even found a slightly used Bridgerton book! (Book 2 of 8) The cookbook section could be a little larger with more variety, but for what it is, I was able to grab a couple of books for my sister with Keto recipes. I also bought a vampire romance novel for myself! The prices also can't be beat. What was normally $17 cost me $4. Incredible. The history section also grabbed my interest, with it being further divided into World, American, and even a small section on Texas. (Other states were decently represented, as well.) The only section I didn't explore were the children's books, but from what I did see, it's easy to lose track of time. Very cute. Oh, and the staff? Such a delight. Always moving and shaking with smiles on their faces. read more

Access via the San Antonio public library. You do not need a library card to access the store. LOTS of books available and very affordable prices. Found books that have been on my list for months at reasonable prices. Pretty sure we spent an hour here and spent less than $20 for tons of books. We were visiting from out of town and they graciously provided us with HEB bags to carry our haul back to the hotel. read more

This is such a cute bookstore! I was here for a yelp event and I'm glad I came! I've never been to the central library before let alone the cellar. When you get off the elevator, you walk right into the store where there is a massive selection of gently used books, tapes, comics, magazines, audiobooks, and more. The employees were super friendly and very helpful. The books are not expensive at all, ranging from $1 to maybe $10 depending on the book and its condition. I left with three international books and I feel so giddy about it! read more

Of course I'm going to find the local public library while visiting a city for the first time. I want to know the history of a community and there is no better place to find it. Also, I love to observe the architecture and of course I have one more agenda; I always visit their book store. You might find books well worn or just survivors of decades, but I promise you will find something (and at a great price) to take home. This was no different. I took the elevator down to the cellar (hence the name) and saw the entire space filled with books, vinyl records, and periodicals. Like many library bookstores, it is staffed by volunteers. I spent over a hour combing each row and shelf. I left with books, a playbill, and a record. If you are near the area (or lucky enough to live there), be sure to frequent there! read more

Awesome store in the basement of the San Antonio public library! You have to take the elevator down. They have a huge selection of books, records, and a big children's area! Everything was priced as marked, the children's books we purchased were in great condition and ranged from $1.25 to $6 and we got two records for $8 total. I'm not sure how often they move their inventory, but would love to come back and spend a bit more time there! What a cool hidden gem! In all my years of living here, I had no idea this existed! I was blown away by the size of the cellar and the amount of books they had. I literally could spend all day here searching the shelves if I had the time! From what I understood, most paperbacks were $1 and hardcovers were $2. However, there are some books that can cost anywhere from $2-$6. The employees were so kind and helpful and really made the experience that much better. I will definitely be back! read more

Todays event at The book Cellar was eye opening to say the least! The San Antonio Public Library is very big, in my opinion. I'd never been, so it was well worth the experience. With five floors of books and collections, I can imagine you can find that which you are looking for. I visited the first, second floors and the "Book Cellar". The number of cubicles and computers on the first floor was impressive. The collections on the second floor was also impressive. The cellar is run by a non profit. They are very attentive. Their service is great and the price for the slightly used books is a great value. You can also see some other classic vinyl and magazines. Who would have thought the hottest club in SA would be located in the basement of a library! A well kept secret (to me...anyway...shout out to my girlfriend for enlightening me of the secret tunnels) The BookCellar is a fantastic place to pick up dirt cheap books on topics about anything under the sun. Kept in just as perfect order as the library running above, things are easy to find and staff are happy to assist. I picked up a biography about James Beard I didn't even know existed, and I can be sure I'll return once I'm done for more gems! This is a fantastic place for teachers to comb through to pick up books for their classroom, the prices and selection can't be beat! read more

This place is very easy to get to and parking is free once you validate it. I don't really care to read books, but I was overly impressed by the amount of good books that they have, and the prices associated with them is an incredible value. I came to this place, not knowing what to expect and I walked away with over $200 worth of books at retail for only $22, and that is an incredible find. The staff was amazing too. I spoke with a couple of them in length about different books and different things. I was interested in and I found that they were very knowledgeable, friendly and welcoming. If I'm ever looking for a book or know someone who is this is the place I'm going to take them for books, records, CDs, DVDs, audiobooks, games, and I'm sure a whole bunch more that I didn't even notice. I've been a regular customer at the Book Cellar for several years. This is a testament to the special place that it is in the city of San Antonio. There is nothing like it anywhere else. I'd like to add that it is beautifully maintained by a dedicated staff -- they know what they are doing and they do it in top form. Over the past year I have come to know several of them by name. They are always ready to assist with a smile. I think that they deserve recognition for what they do. The selection of books is not limited to those that have been removed from the library's collection. There are plenty of books that have been donated, so those have no markings identifying them as former library titles. Lots of great prices, with frequent sales that discount them even further. read more

Starting today until the end of the month they are having a Juvenile patio sale and it is AWESOME. I arrived this morning about 15 minutes before they opened and one of the staff members saw me waiting outside and let me in early! All of the staff were very friendly and helpful as I've come to expect. On their outdoor patio they had a tent set up with several boxes of books for sale including 10 cent juvenile books, 25 cent juvenile biographies and 25-50 cent young adult novels. I also noticed that they had sets of encyclopedias, graphic novels and magazines for sale. I was able to get over 60 books for my classroom library for only $6.25!! Several of them were withdrawn library books but they were still in great condition. I was also able to score a couple of "new" books including Berenstain Bears and Clifford books. I am very happy with my purchases and look forward to coming back for more sales! read more

This place has fantastic prices but the big problem for me is that the books are almost all library discards. I was hoping they would have a lot of donated books mixed in too. This could be a great place for you if you are just looking for cheap books to read and you don't care about the condition. For me, I like to buy books that I can read and then add to my collection. When they are library discards they have all the stickers on there and they are more worn. Plus they were much more obscure books, didn't see a lot of authors I recognized. On the positive the volunteers were super friendly and it is very clean and well organized. I love the SA library system and I really want to support them but it's just not the spot for me, maybe it will be for you. read more

One of the very best places to buy used books. Volunteer staff so don't expect a lot of customer service but they are helpful. Most are library books out of circuit but look for the friends of the library sales which carry a lot of donated books at excellent prices and you can always re donate the ones you don't want to your local library. Beautiful library with many seating areas for reading and the cellar has areas where you can look though your books. They also have special sales almost every weeks where some category is discounted to rock bottom price $0.25. Most are $1 or up to $5 for table books. This store is located in the basement of the Central Library. It's less frequented than the other floors of the library, so there's a more quiet and peaceful atmosphere. Right when you enter, there's a small section of freebie books. The rest of the books and media are very affordably priced. There are a variety of books to choose from, many of which used to be library books. Genres include nonfiction, fiction, children's books, romance, science fiction, classics, foreign language, old textbooks, etc. A snack vending machine is located in the corner of the store. The volunteers are helpful and polite. One of the best parts is that we're supporting our local library system with our purchases. read more
