Came here with my family during our trip to PR based on the strong reviews and its proximity to our hotel and the food did not disappoint. Our waiter gave great recommendations, and we thoroughly enjoyed both our meals and drinks. One thing I've noticed while visiting PR is that service tends to be a bit slower across the board, so I was expecting that here as well. I was slightly hopeful it might be quicker since we came later in the evening as the crowd was clearing out, but there was still a bit of a wait for our food. Definitely visit this place if you have kids. We just decided to go here without reading much into reviews and were surprised that they had kids festival (for Christmas) going on with complimentary face painting, tattoo, popsicles, arts and crafts and lots of games. Service was amazing. Ambiance was perfect by the pool-side and we enjoyed our food - chicken tenders and fries for my toddler was great, my fish tacos we delicious with tender fish and my husband enjoyed his burger. We visited Cana for a date night upon our arrival to Puerto Rico, as we were staying at Fairmont and wanted some local flavors. The food was delicious, the sides particularly creative. Made a reservation here for Christmas Eve dinner. The restaurant itself was fine in terms of service and the hardworking waitstaff who were doing their best at their jobs. The issue we had was the fact that we were not guests of the ESJ Fairmont hotel and they do not offer complimentary parking for people dining here, which is absolutely ridiculous, especially since we ended up spending over $350 dollars for a subpar buffet meal for 3 people, to which inexplicable "food" taxes were lobbed on to the bill. The most offensive aspect was being told the parking would be validated by the hostess and then finding out (later at the pay gate) that there is only a $5.00 discount taken off for the first hour of parking. After trying to contact someone on the phone, we were hung up on so we had to repark our vehicle and physically go back to the restaurant to be told "whoops, it's not "validated" parking, but a $5.00 off discount"the restaurant referred us to the hotel front desk to check to see if they could remediate the situation. Long story short, after spending almost an hour trying to get the parking validated, being told since it was Christmas Eve, they would fix the situation, the restaurant manager, Vivian, completely dropped the ball. Instead of salvaging a bad experience, with professionalism, she chose to be lazy, and simply did nothing to help improve the situation. I was here twice for breakfast while staying at the Fairmont hotel. It's a beautiful area with very nice bar , outdoor and indoor seating. Service by the staff here is definitely 5 stars, they're so friendly. But the food is what counts, it's probably one of the best breakfast buffets I've ever been to. The omelette station had a variety of delicious additional ingredients along with local cheese, these are a very healthy portion. Let's start with breakfast... During my vacation trip here in Puerto Rico I've been able to eat breakfast here at the Cana every morning. I must say it's been a splendor to do so. I've always gotten their breakfast buffet that runs until 11am. This breakfast buffet includes everything I could ever ask for in a breakfast meal. For the traditional breakfast folks they have a great spread of plump sausages, crispy bacon, baked plantains, and fluffy scrambled eggs. They also have a bread & dessert bar section that is worth checking out especially because they change up the desserts daily. The display of local fruits are a delight to see from dragonfruit, guava, melon, watermelon, cantaloupe, strawberries, blueberries, and more. I love their local Greek style yogurt and their granola bowls that they display. But my usual favorite has been their delicious plate of beautifully swirled lox on a plate accompanied by little bowls of capers and diced red onions. Then when you top that with their omelette bar I've been eating in breakfast heaven every day. I get their vegetarian omelette and the secret to this entire breakfast is their house made spicy salsa that they only offer if you ask and if they have made enough for the day. This sauce is divine and makes every bit of the meal as perfect as can be. Now let's go into dinner... I have to say dinner at Cana last night blew every other meal I've had on the island to smidderines. The entire dinner experience was immaculate. We were sold by our passionate acting hostess/manager who greeted us at the front. I believe her name was Shereen who was wearing these pearly white head piece that matched her bubbly yet genuine personality. Without being overbearing she delightfully went down the entire dinner menu section by section passionately explaining her favorite dishes and explaining the rationale to why it was her favorite. She crafted her way quickly through each section of the menu and by the time she was done with explaining the dessert menu we were completely sold in dining at Cana for dinner. We got almost everything she recommended and it sure did not disappoint. For the Para Picar snacks we selected with the Buenuelos de Yautia (white yam fritters, capaez cheese, jalapeño aioli) & for the Para Empezar starters, we got the Salpicon de Polpo (chilled octopus with black olive remoulade, & tostones). This octopus dish was my ultimate favorite. It was so delicious to every bite. I ate the whole thing and did not share. Hahaha. Then for the Platos, we ordered the Chillo a la Plancha (whole red snapper, cilantro,preserved lemon salsa verde, & lemon shout sauce). It comes in a small, medium, & large size option. We tried to order the small but they only had medium available. It was a lot of red snapper but delicious and we ended up taking more than half of it home. We also ordered the Arroz Con Congrejo y Langostino (blue crab rice with prawns). The prawns were so juicy and plump and spectacularly enormous. I lived the prawns. I was a bit saddened to see the blue crab felt drowned out by the rice but still delectable. Then to top off the evening we ended with the Copa de Caramelo (salted chocolate mousse, raspberry chocolate crumble) multiple layered dessert that was to die for. We were so pleased to have tipped off our trip with our evening at Cana. It was a sheer delight to end it on such a high note here at the Fairmont Hotel. read more

We did not have their dinner options until our last night in Puerto Rico - but what a sweet way to end our trip! My goodness, Cana is beautiful. The AC is lovely inside but the real view is outside. You get to see the gorgeous layout that is the hotel pools and gardening. Our servers were always so kind and took amazing care of us. Service was superb! We ordered the mofongo, the pork chop, the blue crab rice, and the sweet potato creme brulee. My partner and I were a HUGE fan of the rice. It was flavorful, packed with delicious crab flavor, and found the prawns to be beautifully cooked. Our favorite dish was dessert. We were staying at Royal Sonesta next door for a business meeting. My wife has gluten and dairy allergies and we always check the Find Me Gluten Free app for nearby options. We tried Cana and it was great! The food was fantastic (she had the crab appetizer and swordfish entree). So good, that we went back the next night and took some friends. This place is beautiful. The hotel is exquisite and the entire layout is smart. I wish I could say the same about the dining experience at Caña. It was our first night in Puerto Rico, so we were looking for something authentic and upscale. I was excited when we sat down in the beautiful space and awaited our dining experience. Our waiter was a nice guy. We ordered two appetizers (grilled octopus and goat cheese croquettes) and it took him about 10 minutes to get our drinks to the table. No big deal, sometimes the bar can be a little slow. Then we waited for appetizers. He took our main order and we continued to wait for our appetizers. 30 minutes later, our mains came out. No appetizers. We told the waiter, he didn't believe we ordered appetizers until he looked at his notepad and saw that he wrote it down. We started eating our mains. My pork tenderloin was over $40 and was a portion size for a 5 year old. It was supposed to be sous vide which one would assume means the pork would be amazingly tender, but it was slightly overcooked. The flavor was good, but it was gone in about 3 bites because there was so little of it. My wife's snapper was fine. Nothing too special, and for $60 we were expecting something more impressive. The real kick to the face was the "kid's meals" and drinks. I didn't ask about prices when he rattled of items--they're kids meals, how much could they be? I figured it'd be a little silly, but boy was I wrong. It wasn't silly, it was criminal. Robbery. 1 lemonade--$12. 2 cans of sprite--$12. Hotdog with fries--$18. Chicken quesadilla with fries-$28. Chicken breast with side of rice/beans--$28. Finally when we finished our mains, they returned with appetizers...but both of them were wrong. Then the things we ordered came out. The octopus was very overcooked and I only ate it because it was $20. The croquettes were amazing. I would eat them every day. The waiter apologized and offered to take care of dessert, so we all ordered. Tiramisu, chocolate lava cake, sweet corn beignets with Rum sauce, and ice cream. The tiramisu was an attempt at deconstructing in a tall glass, so it was difficult to eat and unbalanced because of how it has to be layered in the glass. The lava cake was, you guessed it, not what was actually delivered to the table but the service was so slow (it was well over 2 hours at that point) that we weren't sending it back. The sweet corn beignets were completely inedible. The exterior crust was fine, but the insides were mush and it was like putting a big spoonful of beach sand in my mouth. It was basically the uncooked beignet batter encased in a crusty shell. We like to try new places and have no qualms with spending good money for good food and service. Sadly, our waiter was off his game, the food was beyond disappointing, and I would have felt less violated if I just got mugged at the local corner store instead of paying those prices for the experience that was delivered. 2 1/2 hours later we were happy to be leaving, certain that they'd have to pay me a significant amount of money to ever consider stepping foot in that restaurant again. It's a shame because the potential is huge. But hey, if you like being disappointed with everything and then getting shived by a bill that you stare at for 10 minutes because you're certain something is wrong (sorry, those are the actual hidden prices)--this is your spot! We had a large party with reservations, we were told we would all be seated together, when we arrive that was not the case, and all the tables had to be moved to accommodate us sitting together as informed earlier. So we then we're split between two servers, half the table had one server, half the table had another. So the left half of the table was done eating before the right side of the table even got a plate of food. Server on the one side of the table was rude and short the entire time, the female on the left was very kind an accommodating. Food was ok, not very good for the price. The tartar was good, the octopus was good, we had food come out incorrectly after waiting so long to wait again, the swordfish was dry. Drinks 10/10 very yummy Overall, not a great experience. You can get a made to order omelette, coffee, fruits, meats, cheeses, cereal, pressed juice, etc. All pretty good. I'd skip dinner. It's expensive and not particularly good. My snapper was dry and over cooked but well seasoned. So go for breakfast, tip your servers if they are making an omelette as well as waiting on you, and skip the dinner. read more

I wasn't sure about the prices looking over the menu, but I ended up coming twice for breakfast and once for dinner during my stay because all food at a hotel is on the pricier side and it was still really good food + atmosphere. For breakfast, they have some a la cart options, but the breakfast buffet is only a little more (~$29) so worth it to just get the variety. We ended up coming early morning when they just opened, and we got to sit outside near the pool with a nice breeze and no one was in the pool yet making noise. For the food, they had an omlette station, bagels and lox, assorted pastries, a ton of fruit, and breakfast meats. It wasn't a huge spread, but it had a great variety of tasty items. Coffee was included and service was good.5/5 For dinner, we came back and had the ribeye steak, which was a nice large piece of meat cooked perfectly with shallots on top (which I didn't really need but may have added a little soaked in flavor) and the sauce wasn't as steak juicy as I was hoping. The sweet potato dish was great, an interesting combination of the sweet with cheesy that really worked. I just wished that the menu had more options, there were small, medium, and large dishes but not that much per category. You can also bill to the room if that's easier. I enjoyed all the meals and this was the most enjoyable place for me me in the hotel. I was between a 4 and 5 for a couple of issues but I rounded up. Worth a visit! read more

My daughter took me for Father's Day, June 15, 2025. We arrived at 5 pm. Place was empty, with staff at the bar, laughing and ignoring us. Nice table with a view of the pool and ocean beyond. We went because Jose Enrique's, is a consulting chef, and we have been fans of his for 15 years. Unfortunately he wasn't there and the food was horrible and outrageously expensive. I ordered the heirloom tomato salad and it was fake, the tomato's were soft Puerto's Rican variety, not heirloom, and the vinegrette was bla. Not the tangy delicious dressing you expect with a $300 meal. The salad was basically a soggy mess. Next came the pork chop, like a piece of wood, I couldn't even cut it. Sent back. After waiting for our waiter, who never came back to ask how we liked the food, so I hailed a bus boy, and gave it to him. Oh I forgot my drink. I ordered a special cocktail, and was it nasty, I again had to find my disappearing waiter and sent it back. They did produce a decent Old Fashion, (for $20) of which I had three and one was comped. Next my daughter ordered a filet Mignon for me ($65). This was a small ball of gristle without one clean bite. And she was so mortified, at the food that she wouldn't let me send that back too. The prices were disgusting when you think about the quality of the food. We paid $300 and walked out of there completely dissatified... THAT, we actually stopped at ANOTHER restaurant for dinner. The desserts sounded good, in theory, but so does filet mignon. We weren't willing to spend more money and be disappointed This place was a typical tourist trap. The service here is bad the receiption desk lady is not patient and quite rude, but the table service is warm and welcomed. We waited almost one hour to have our food. With knowledgeable, helpful suggestions and excellent service by Alex, we enjoyed returning here after almost two years, delayed by the COVID closures. While the menu is currently reduced as compared to our past visits, some favorites remain and new dishes have been added. The high quality and creativity remain. Several delicious vegetarian options are offered - three of which we wholeheartedly enjoyed; ENSALADA DE TOMATE, SANDIA Y AGUACATE: tomato, watermelon and avocado salad ÑAME: white yam, coconut milk braised shiitake mushrooms, pineapple "pique," celery leaves BERENJENA A LA PARILLAÁ: grilled eggplant, garlic & parsley picada, preserved lemon, cashews, spices, herbs Dishes are generously proportioned and intended for sharing. The food was really good at this restaurant. Smaller portions like a tapas restaurant which I absolutely love. They gave a glass of Cava or Prosecco on the house which was a nice touch. Caña is the fancy in-house restaurant at the El San Juan hotel (now owned by Fairmont). It's nicely decorated with a mix of Spanish and general 'stuff I found at HomeGoods' influencers. It's also located by the pool but set back a bit, so it's pretty quiet with both indoor and outdoor tables. They use the same space for all meals however it's effectively 2 restaurants in 1: for breakfast/lunch it's the main restaurant for the resort, and for dinner it becomes the fancy place. Please note this as it wasn't clear the first time we went. Service was stellar across the board, unlike other places at the ESJ (looking at you, pool bar). Typically had Enrique during breakfast/lunch-time and Alberto for dinner. Enrique was a super nice and accommodating guy, while Alberto knew the menu--and every single thing about every dish--like the back of his hand. One of the more professional waiters I've ever had, and without any snottiness. For dinner, the chef was there trying out the next iteration of the menu; they keep no cans/microwaves in the kitchen so everything has to be fresh. In other words, the people working here actually take pride in their food. For dinner, the result of all of this was one of the best meals I had anywhere. Came here 3 times, once with my wife/kid, once for takeout (baby wasn't cooperating), and once by myself. For appetizers we had the buñuelos (white yam fritters), wahoo tartar (their take on a delicate ceviche), and a roasted beet salad (with a local white cheese). All 3 were superb, with the wahoo being the best ceviche I've ever had, the buñuelos being like a savory zeppole, and the roasted beet salad being just an excellent rendition of a classic. For mains, I had the whole grilled red snapper, the arroz con cangrejo y langostino (crab rice with prawns), the camarones al ajillo (garlic shrimp), and tostones (fried mashed green plantains) as a side. The crab rice was excellent although on the heavy side. The snapper is what I got for takeout, and as weird as that was, it was a great piece of fish. My favorite was the camarones al ajillo, which was the best version I've had of this classic anywhere. Perfect for dipping the tostones in the sauce. Had the bread pudding and 1 other item (I forget) for dessert, and these were awesome too; one of the richer bread puddings I've had. Drinks were similarly excellent, both alcoholic and the coffee. Things were a bit simpler for breakfast/lunch. Menu seems to have changed since then but the mallorca egg sandwich and truffled califlower pizza were great, especially when paired with some local hot sauce (just ask). For lunch they share the kitchen with the pool bar so the menu is the same. The burger, reuben, fish tacos, shrimp bowl and chicken caesar were all solid. Again it's served in a friendly and enjoyable atmosphere, unlike the pool bar where they forget orders and then get pissed when you call them on it. They keep the bartenders the same between the casual/fancy meals, so would also recommend drinks here (killer mai thais but reall anything is good). This place almost single-handedly makes up for other shortcomings at the El San Juan. Very happy to see this be the Fairmont's first change to the hotel as it bodes well for the future. Special place for dinner, while being perfectly serviceable for breakfast lunch. Even if you're staying nearby, it's worth the trip. read more

Had a last minute breakfast here and the food was great, the patio overlooking the pool was peaceful, and our server was truly the best. The breakfast buffet is worth the money. My favorite part was the fresh juice and smoothie bar. Thank you for lovely experience. read more
