We selected Mar Del Caribe from internet reviews for a Tuesday evening dinner as we were heading back to the Isla Verde area after visiting Old San Juan. My wish that night was to find a place offering fried whole snapper and it was on their menu - and I even called ahead to be sure it was available that night. So I was hyped to try their snapper version, and it didn't disappoint. The vibe of the restaurant was that of a friendly neighborhood joint, possibly a bit retro time-wise. Service was prompt and informative. We both had cocktails, and Paige said it was one of the best whisky sours she's had. With the snapper - which was HUGE - I had an order of mamposeao, a rice and bean stew that was amazing. My wife's chicken parm also got a great review from her. We parked in the small lot directly in front of the restaurant, and there was an attendant to help with parking. read more

Four stars is being very generous. But to be fair, some things were very good and other things had a lot to be desired. As others have mentioned, it looks like a hole in the wall from the outside and parking is a bit difficult but there is parking across the street near what looks like a park. The seafood options are very tasty and nicely presented . So-called avocado salad is just a bunch of slices of avocado on a plate, no salad. The steak was very salty, and even though it was requested to be well done, it came back as a rare to medium. The servers were friendly, but the service itself was a bit slow . I'd love to be able to write a review about the food & ambience. The only thing I can honestly write about is the service, which was NON-EXISTENT for us. We walked into the restaurant & headed to the bar. The hostess gave us 2 dinner menus, & our menus didn't match. Oh, well. Then, we looked at the drink menu. The bartender NEVER even looked at us. After several minutes of waiting for the bartender to notice us, to no avail, we counted to "3" & walked out. This is NO way to treat a customer. This is a great place to have an authentic Puerto Rican meal. They have several varieties of rice and they are all very good. We had chicken, steak, and pork and they were all excellent in quality and taste. The guava dessert was so good. Our server, Felix was the best server we had while on the entire island. (That was my husband's first review ever so you know it's good) This charming little restaurant (that is very unpretentious from the outside) was recommended by the staff where we're staying nearby.
