What an absolute gem right in Lenior! The food was so fresh and authentic that it felt like I was in Mexico and there was a beach waiting just outside. Our lunch started with the best chips, salsa, and pico, that itself was as if pico de gallo and guacamole had had a love child. Next, my husband and I split a cheese stuffed chili rellano in a delicious sauce. Definitely recommend. My husband then had tacos carnitas and I had birria tacos. Our waitress was friendly and patient, helping us navigate the menu and made excellent suggestions. The atmosphere is clean, and pride in the business is evident in all aspects. Very authentic food- even saw them skinning cactus leafs in the kitchen on the way out! I'm not quite that adventurous, so we enjoyed the chips, salsa & pico that came to the table. Tamales were excellent and I really enjoyed a torta barria, except sadly the bread was slightly burnt. Large portions as two entrees still allowed leftovers. Also of note... We come here for the tacos which they always have. However they also have great specials that change daily. The tacos are some of the best I've had. My personal favorite are carnitas and al pastor. The tacos de birria which is a special sometimes are also fantastic. Service is great, prices are reasonable and the portions are good. Their pico salsa and chips are also really good and fresh. This is hands down the most authentic, cleanest, friendliest, tastiest, Mexican restaurant I've found in the area....and it's in Lenoir! And I am including all of the Mexican restaurants in Lenoir, Hickory, Morganton, Granite Falls, and Morganton! There are a TON of Mexican restaurants in the aforementioned towns/cities. Most of them are generic and nothing special. Let me add that I went to this restaurant with my in-laws from CA whose family is Mexican and owned a Mexican restaurant in the 1950's for years in Los Angeles. My father in law loves tamales. This was the primary reason for going to this restaurant in Lenoir. They not only had good tamales, but a few other atypical Menu items that are classic and authentic Mexican fare: chilaquiles, tortas, menudo and pozoles. Prices were quite reasonable AND everything was so fresh, generous portions and extremely tasty. My father in law doesn't eat much these days - he is 87 and doesn't eat meat. He inhaled both of his cheese and jalapeño tamales....que bueno! They served us house made tortilla chips and fresh salsa - plus a pico de gallo style avocado/onion/tomato dish to go with the chips. I cannot WAIT to go back - it was so hard to choose what to order bcs it wasn't the usual fare of burritos, tacos, enchiladas smothered in cheese sauces. Just GO! This is the best Mexican food I've had. Fresh and so well done. From the chips and beautiful salsa side. I had two tamales and they were amazing. I looked around and all the food was looking like something I wanted. The construction crews showed up and had ordered before I'm guessing. Plates and plates of food came out. Our family of four, including our 5 yo and 7 yo, loved everything about this hidden gem. Everything tasted more fresh and flavorful than any other Mexican restaurant I've visited recently, and we eat a lot of Mexican. The salsa verde and chips served when we sat down was bright and flavorful, and the server brought our children a small bowl of (delicious) beans for them to dip their chips into. They also give you three large bottles of different housemade sauces, each delightfully spicy and so flavorful. I had the huarache with marinated pork. The handmade tortilla that served as its base was amazing and I already know it's something I will crave, which stinks because I live over an hour away. My wife had a massive gordita with stewed chicken in green sauce, which she enjoyed. Nothing on the menu is your typical "Americanized" Mexican food, but I suggest you try everything. Now this is the most AUTHENTIC Mexican restaurant I've ever been too. The menu is in Spanish and English with everything very reasonably priced (example $2 a taco). My mother and I asked several questions about the menu and the waitress brought us a free tamale to try! She was kind and helpful. The tamale was hot and flavorful. We each opted for a taco each (ate too many chips and salsa!) Salsa was also a hit. I had a shredded chicken taco and my mom had pork. She made the comment this was the best pork she'd ever had. So, I'm a white southern male from NC who has never visited any Central American or South American country, and therefore could not possibly claim that "authentic" means much of anything coming from me. However, this is exactly what I look for in a Mexican restaurant. The "Americanized" Mexican chains that sell umpteen types of burritos with poorly cooked meat smothered in processed cheese sauces are only appetizing once in a blue moon (usually, when hungover). This kind of place is the bee's knees. I frequent this restaurant (about once a week, honestly) because they change the specials every day. Some weeks they have things I haven't tried before, due to the lack of exposure in NC (pambazos, birria), and other weeks they showcase a 100x better version of that same staple you see in every chain Latin American restaurant, but they always put on a little twist to keep it interesting and delicious (e.g., barbacoa with lamb, mole on chicken thighs, Chile relleno with homemade salsa and Oaxaca, pozole, tamales, etc.). Every week when I come in, the showrunner explains what's new that day, and she knows immediately that I'm going to ask for it. And when I decide I am not in the experimental mood, I just go for the one thing not on the menu that is their best kept secret: the white-dude's grilled chicken burrito, or maybe a gordita con pollo en salsa. The chefs are talented, and the staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and as passionate about their food as I am. If you like Mexican, and Gordo's queso doesn't do anything for you, please come here.
