Friendly service and pleasant surroundings don't quite make up for the sub-par selection when it comes to draught cider and draught beer.

“Well when it comes to pubs I always go for the lounger, leather sofas or comfy laid back seating.”

Stopped by on a business trip…read more Good food, good beer, friendly service. I would definitely stop back again. A little pricey, but when on expense who cares!

This is the pub I mostly try to avoid having to visit in Hendon. The drinks are extortionately…read moreexpensive for the area (i.e. expect to pay over £5 per drink for spirits and mixers), and there are no cold soft drinks at all, they are all on shelves behind the bar, and the fridges are used only for alcoholic beverages. I had expected this to mean that a soft drink would be cheap, but it is not. You are served a mini bottle (less than half a pint) of warm coke and charged about £2 for it. The staff do not seem bothered about the nasty warmth of their drinks, I just got a shrug and a kind of "that's just how it is here" response. The food is probably the redeeming feature, being reasonably priced and tasty hearty fare, if a little bog-standard pub grub (but then it is a pub!). The only problem here is the seemingly random amount of time you wait for it. Sometimes the food comes quickly, and other times you find yourself asking what has happened, and after some embarrassment on the part of the staff, find that they have forgotten the large group of you all sitting there looking hungry. The interior is clean, well maintained and comfortable, with a large number of tables and chairs so you can sit down to eat. It is however very dark inside, not so much a problem at nights, but it seems very dark compared to outside during the day, making it a bit weird to eat lunch in. The pub shows sporting events on big screens, which are much larger than usual pub screens, though if you aren't there for the sports, you might want to avoid the pub on these occasions as it becomes very loud and crowded at these times, or you could sit outside and watch the world go by on the tables they have out on the street. Overall, not somewhere I go unless I can't force an alternative!

People like pubs for different reasons. I like the décor and feel - it's laid back, not…read morepretentious. It has a cool beer garden that is nicely laid out. The food isn't bad either with a great prix fix menu (2 courses for £10, a deal!) That said, it's SLOW. The ongoing joke is that it will take an hour between ordering your food and getting it. A slight exaggeration but not by much!! Food is good but can be hit or miss. We ordered some chips but sent them back because they looked like the leftovers from the bottom of the fry vat. That said, those that were cooked right were perfect: steaming hot, crunchy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. The whitebait went down a treat. The gammon was meaty and flavourful but the eggs were overcooked (wherefore art thou, runny yolk??) The desserts came about 45 minutes after they cleared our plates away because they had forgotten about it (luckily, we were pretty well steamed at this point and had forgotten we had even ordered dessert!) Is it perfect? No. But it ticks enough of the right buttons that the inconsistencies are forgiven.

Fish & chips, one of the better ones. Good fry surface, good chips, fresh white fish, no grey bits,…read moreI like the sea salt on top. Was supposed to be minted peas, but was plain regular. Salmon on gnocchi was also good. Bit of a Gastro style pub. Not a cheap menu kind of pub. Nice patio. Handsanitizer was very sticky, like they had mixed it with honey. This is on the corner of Billionair's Avenue, where dictators do their real estate money laundering. I wonder if the House of Saud ever come here to eat fish & chips, because apparently they own 10 houses on the nearby exclusive avenue. The only thing I didn't like was that to use the bathroom you have to touch a rusty old dungeon lock key attached to a century old metal mug to open the door, because I guess we can't be trusted with an unlocked door that is locked from the inside. My Diet Coke wasn't very cold. But I had a nice time here and the service was friendly.

Oh Boy! You want to talk about history and feel it? Then…read morecome to the Spaniard's Inn. Built sometime in the 16th century this place is older than Canada or the United States and still going strong! It's been mentioned in Charles Dickens' "Pickwick Papers" and Bram Stoker's "Dracula". The poets Lord Byron and John Keats were both regulars here. After a day of tramping through Hampstead Heath and Kenwood House, you're going to build an appetite and the Spaniard's Inn is the perfect place for a dinner and drinks afterwards. So what if it is in Zone 3? Your Oyster card should cover getting here and back no problem. I came in around 6pm for supper and there was no one else in the room I was seated. I did see a blaring fireplace and two chairs already occupied by some regulars, but I was quite happy to be seated in one of the booths in the side room. I made no reservations but had no problem coming in and being seated, probably because it was the middle of the week and early evening. I'm almost positive that their Sunday Roast dinners are very popular and the place is probably packed solid and you'll definitely need reservations then. I ordered a glass of wine, their Scotch Egg as a starter, followed by their British Beef Burger with Triple-Cooked Chips. It was way too filling for any room left over for dessert. All of it was excellent. Service is A-1, the girls who were serving me were really friendly and chatty and honestly for the quality of the food here, prices are very reasonable. Also because of the historical toll-house outside and the super-narrow street, you have all the traffic buzzing past your window. I'm certain this must be a lovely place in the summer months as well. I have no hesitation recommending this place, even for the experience of having a drink at such a historically significant pub and when I'm back in London, I'm definitely coming here again.

We unfortunately did not make reservations and found the dining room it to be full when we popped…read morein during an afternoon. However, we were able to grab drinks and sit outside under heat lamps and enjoy a cocktail on property. What a fun property. Established in 1585 this place is history!
