I have started cooking every meal whenever I visit my parents. The reason being that it's well known that the service at every restaurant in Scranton that isn't a Mexican restaurant is awful. I recently made an exception and visited Catch 21. I still think the menu is wonderful, with delicious specials and fair prices. Catch 21 compares to 3rd string places here where I am in NYC. Some questionable plating (as was the case with CVL) but fantastic portion sizes. I'm really impressed to not see the menu pared down at all compared to my last visit. The service, however, was horrible. Seated in a corner of the secondary room, we were left alone for nearly an hour after getting our entrees. No check ins, no second glass of wine, no bussing, no water service. When I finally flagged the busboy down to ask for a check and for the meals to be bussed, he forgot the check, and we waited almost another fifteen minutes to flag someone else down. It's so sad to see that head-in-the-clouds restaurant service is endemic even at the most expensive restaurant in town. read more

We were a group of around 25 people in a nice private room near the entrance. The service was understandably slow since it seemed like they had one waitress plus a helper in our room, but she did a great job and had a warm and helpful personality. We all had the lobster bisque which was good but needed more sherry in my opinion. I ordered the cajun tuna, and I asked for it to be cooked all the way through. Our waitress assured me that she will request that it's cooked "Medium Well". Unfortunately most of the pieces were raw inside. I would have asked it to be cooked more but we had already waited 2 hours for our entrees. On a positive note, the 3 others in my good enjoyed what they otrdered. We had dinner there last night. Service was outstanding. Great wine and cocktails. Unfortunately the food was a disaster. Keep in mind that our reservation was at 5:00 so the restaurant was not at all full so I can not excuse poor food due to a busy Saturday night. My husbands crab bisque was so salty he sent it back. My shrimp scampi was overcooked to the point of rubbery with no hint of garlic. He has lobster ravioli and the pasta was thick and chewy with very little lobster filling. The cream sauce however was very tasty. The tuna appetizer was also delicious. All in all, I would go back for drinks, apps and the excellent service, but would not return for dinner. read more

I can't believe I took so long to try this spot. When I arrived I found parking on the street. I walked into a super cute restaurant. I sat at the bar and Gary was my bartender and he was nice. I ordered the espresso martini for a drink and it was good followed by the pinot nior. For my meal I got the shrimp and crab cakes and I substituted the vegetables for spinach and it was soo good. I enjoyed the flavor. I met the owner Benny and he was so accommodating. He was so nice to me and made sure I was good. I really enjoyed my time and will return. read more

Ordering to go is always a challenge, but it's so great when they have an attention to detail to your order. My order was a Caesar salad with anchovies and lobster ravioli. The to-go experience was great. Everyone was friendly and the restaurant is beautiful. Fast forward.... returning to my hotel. I found they included bread with my order, but no butter. My Caesar salad I ordered with anchovies had it gad no anchovies. FYI- Anchovies are an option when you order. Salad was good, but no anchovies . Lobster ravioli, pasta was very thick and lobster was orange colored and had a very strong sea/ocean taste (see photo). I love supporting local. I was born and raised in Scranton, PA. Recently, I was visiting family and friends while staying downtown -- it's sad that so many restaurants close after lunch or by 8:00 in The Electric City. I really wanted Pizza by Pappas to remind me of the days when I attended Bishop Hannan High School. Luckily, Catch 21 was open next door to my favorite pizza parlor. I sat at the bar because the dining room was busy. I didn't mind not having a table as I was dining solo. I heard the staff speaking Spanish and they were a little surprised that this Gringo is fluent in the language. Boriqua! I only ordered an appetizer and a drink. We ate here this past weekend for the first time while La Festa occurred outside. We were celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary. Overall we were pretty disappointed with our experience. I'd say some of the blame was La Festa and some on the staff, but I'm not coming back a second time to find out. To start, I made a reservation over the phone 2 weeks in advance. Somehow the person at the restaurant made the reservation for 4:30 instead of 6:30 like I asked. I called the day before when I got the text confirming the wrong time, so we didn't get off to a great start. Luckily they were still able to seat us at 6:30 and outside as requested. We arrived on time and were seated promptly. A waiter came by and introduced himself. He took our drink/appetizer order. About 5-10 minutes went by and our appetizer arrived from someone else. They then took our dinner order, but never mentioned specials. We did not have drinks yet (including water). The drinks came about 5 minutes later. The main courses arrived 30 minutes after we were first seated. While the food was good, we did not intend to be done with our anniversary dinner within 50 minutes. When we were done eating, no one stopped by to ask how the meal was, do you want a check, do you want coffee/dessert. It was really strange, we were just sitting at an empty table for about 10 minutes when I finally asked for the check. The check arrives and I put my card in the slot and leave it over the edge of the table. Our waiter walked by empty handed 3 times before he took the payment. If I had to guess, they were more interested in getting our table turned as quickly as possible since there was a large event happening and they wanted to maximize profits. read more

"Better than a diner" would be an appropriate tag line. $44 for Kendall Jackson Chardonnay, which widely retails for $13. The best restaurants in NYC don't mark up that much! The house wines reasonably priced but poor choices. Nothing to match with a steak. The Trump cab sickeningly sweet (surprise)! The porterhouse was forgettable. The chicken caprese tasteless. Maybe the seafood is good? AV, Carmens, Posh, and the Brazilian rodizio joint are better choices if you are looking for fine dining in Scranton. Very disappointed. read more

First time at Catch 21, brought my family for dinner. I live out of state and was craving East coast clams. Not only were the clams fantastic, but everyone's meal was excellent. We ordered twin lobster tails, swordfish special, lobster raviolis and crab cake/shrimp for dinner. Everyone raved about their meals. Loved the cozy ambiance and the staff and service were excellent and personable. Will definitely visit again when I come back and my family that lives here will be repeat customers. She was rude to us from the start. Never introduced herself, had an attitude and spoke down to us, openly treated us differently than everyone else. Never came back to check on us, never once filled waters (after looking at us MULTIPLE TIMES and we had empty glasses), was friendly to everyone else but US. never even checked on us after food was out, showed everyone else the Valentine's Day dessert tray but us, told everyone the daily special but us. We happened to "catch" this place on its 3rd night of business after driving 9 hours on our way from Houston, TX to Boston, MA, and boy did we find a real catch! This place was amazing! I had the lobster ravioli, it tasted fantastic. My fiancée had the calamari and gave it 2 thumbs up. My mom had the chicken Marsala and cannot stop raving about it. My FMIL had a small salad and mac n cheese, both were also great. We are so thankful they kept the kitchen open for us, poured us heaping glasses of wine and even provided water for our dog! The food was great, I ordered the pork chop, and it was done excellently. The atmosphere is nice, and it goes along with the trendy vibe they create here. I'm a little disappointed, that for a surf and turf menu, you get potato chips, and additional sides other than that are extra. The potato chips were good, but I would expect that with a sandwich, or any kind of pub food, but they aren't going for that, so I found that kinda off putting. The separate sides were good, but pricey for what you got, and kinda gave me the impression of nickel and diming you over everything. Amazing dinner at Catch 21! We went late after driving all day thru rainstorms in Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, but they kept the kitchen open to serve us and the food was awesome! Then we find out they just opened .. the owner was so accommodating and our waiter took great care of us!! Have the Lobster Ravioli or Chicken Marsala .. delicious!!
