In the couple of weeks I've been volunteering, I've been impressed with the staff. They work so hard and are so helpful to anyone who comes in. They genuinely care about the work they do and every single fur ball they meet. The place is so clean without having that whole medicinal and cold vibe you see in some shelters. The cats are generally happy and have all sorts of enrichment opportunities at their disposal. Five Acres also does a ton of services for the community. There's an entire area and staff dedicated solely to helping pet owners in need. That's awesome for anyone struggling to get back on their feet.

I watched excitement as they found this location, and I had the pleasure of seeing the progress over the past couple of months. Finally, the grand opening was here! First off, this store is all things bunnies and bright pink! They have everything you can think of to ensure your bunny has an amazing enclosure full of toys, beds, towers, chews, and mats. They also have great food and treats, not the totally inadequate food you see in big name stores. Bunnies have a very specific diet, and feeding them things that aren't nutritious to them can be harmful and even fatal. The store also has human things, such as mugs, t-shirts, and bunny-themed gifts. Everyone who was working the day I came in were super helpful and polite. Best of all, they are genuine: they aren't looking to pressure you in to things you do not need. I could literally just hang out here and have a good time. The environment is inviting, bright, and cheerful. You can also meet bunnies, and who doesn't like that?! They often have adaptable bunnies "helping" in the store, and these bunnies are fully vetted and eager to find their forever home. All proceeds go straight back into the rescue, which is fantastic since so many bunnies are dumped around here and cannot survive without Dolly's and the epic volunteers and foster homes. I called multiple people within the facility and asked for a breakdown and to better understand and got the run around. It's crazy to me that the humane society is that expensive. I know that we adopted other pets over the years from the APA, and my family of origin did, too, when I was a kid. When we told him we'd been calling her "Mama," he rolled his eyes and said, "We have so many Mamas," like it was an inconvenience. When my friend offered to foster, he brushed her off, saying the dog would "probably get adopted quickly anyway" and that she could "maybe go on the website." He also made the whole intake process uncomfortable. I was sitting with the dog in my lap when he sat at a desk far away, asked for my ID (which my friend had to bring to him), and then slapped it back on the counter without a word. The entire time he was typing things in, he didn't explain what he was doing, what the next steps were, or even why he needed my info. I'm thankful they took the dog in, but the lack of kindness or communication really soured the experience. It shouldn't feel like a burden to bring in an animal who needs help.

His normal place sent him a last minute email that they had accidentally overbooked and he would be waitlisted. By last minute, I mean 30 mins before we were going to leave and drop him off. In a panic, we found Country Acres, who was able to take him last minute. They are incredible kind and patient, despite us getting every piece of information wrong. We knew his pup was in good hands, because all of the handlers we met were so nice and understanding, and at pick up explained he had actually ran out of food in the morning and they supplemented. The facility is extremely well maintained, offers additional services to really make your furry family member feel at home or pampered.

I received an email stating that I had been approved. This all happened early in the week. Today (Saturday) I drove all the way in from the next county to meet the animal that I had been approved for and some attendant came out and wouldn't even let me meet the dog because he decided that day based on the same information on the application that I wasn't a "good fit". They also could have let me know this before hand and saved me the gas and time. I guess I should have gone on a different day, maybe a different attendant would have actually wanted TWIX to find a great home. VERY DISAPPOINTED. DO NOT RECCOMEND.

Olivia was at the counter when I walked in and she was very friendly. She directed me to the dog section and I found my new best friend ... Olivia brought my new buddy in the playroom and we fell in love. I wanted him right away but Olivia said Saturday's are a busy day that I can fill out an application and she would get back with me later .. But I just couldn't let him spend another night there so I winked at her and showed her my charm LOL and she took the time to help me take my new best friend home. On the way home we stopped in the U City Loop and listened to live music @ Vintage Vinyl . And now we are starting a new life together all because Olivia took time out of a very busy day to help me and my new best friend... Thank you Olivia for all your help ...You are a sweet heart....
