TERRIBLE experience, and not just for us. Bar was nearly empty when we arrived (fewer than 10 patrons), had the World Cup game on mute despite advertising it on the door, and refused to turn up the volume when asked. A patron next to us asked just before we did and got refused too -- then was abruptly cut off and denied service shortly after talking to us about their own bad experience there. ANOTHER patron, came in after we did, was also treated rudely and refused service. My own issue: ordered a lemon drop with tequila (not vodka.. it makes me sick). First one was fine. After a bartender shift change, the new bartender -- who was actually the shift lead -- made my second one, and it was clearly off; I suspected vodka was used. I asked for it to be fixed, was refused.. So I sent it back, and asked for it off the bill. Paid my tab in full, then noticed at tip time the charge was still there. Server said the bartender wouldn't remove it. When I spoke to him directly, he blamed me for ordering something "nobody knows what it is," and when I said I'd dispute it with my card instead, he attempted to snatch my card off the table. I refused to engage further with him, asked for someone else (refused AGAIN) so I left.. I will be disputing the charge with Amex since he was the only one with register access. Annapolis houses the Naval Academy, but a visit to Annapolis would not be complete without a stop to Castlebay Irish Pub. Visited with a bunch of guys after touring the Naval Academy campus...a short walk from the campus, it's a great Irish pub with a great ambiance and selection of Irish beer on tap (Guinness, Harp, Smithwick, Kilkenny) as well as the usual American brand. In addition, it houses a great selection of whiskeys: Irish (Bushmills, Jamesons, Red Breast, etc. - the different varieties), bourbons (to include Pappy's, Blanton), scotch (MacAllans), etc. The dining experience pairs well with the beer and whiskeys. The meat for the reuben sandwich and traditional corned beef are selected and prepared in a traditional manner making it delicious. If you are lucky, you will meet the owner of the establishment, who will regale you with stories about past Academy graduates who would return to the pub after graduation or even about his playing in a rock & roll band. DO NOT GO HERE! I just went here for lunch like an hour or so ago with my boyfriend. Service was good, but food was terrible. My boyfriend got the crab Mac and cheese and it did not look appetizing. They melted sliced cheese on it. Noodles were so orange but the sauce was white and the crab had no seasoning. I had beer battered chicken tenders and fries and the beer was so intense. Right after, my boyfriend did not feel too good. I was fine for a bit, then my stomach started not feeling well. I ended up throwing it all up. Pretty sure we got some sort of food poisoning. Order was a baked brie, French onion soup and beef stew. Also a black and tan. The beer was perfectly poured and as expected. The baked brie was about 1/4 wheel served with bread, honey and apples. It was warmed and tasted pretty good. French onion soup was very generic buy not bad. You're probably wondering why this got a 2 star.... the beef stew was extremely lacking. Literally, 5 small pieces of beef, 5 tiny potatoes, 1 tiny carrot and 1 tiny piece of celery in a thin gravy. It was supposed to be (and was priced as) a meal, but it scored about 10% as a soup. I visited Annapolis for the first time last Saturday to celebrate Veterans Day and wandered around until I because thirsty for a cold pint of something...I discovered Castlebay Irish Pub after peeking into at least 4 other Irish Pubs and not finding exactly the atmosphere I was seeking. Castlebay reminded me of pubs in Ireland, a great atmosphere for families and solo drinkers alike. The ciders and beers were about 2$ more than they should have been ($6-7 each) so that was disappointing although manageable. I would have stayed for lunch however was not offered a menu, but that was fine. I asked the bartender for some seafood suggestions and he told me of a few places in the area where I could get a nice bite to eat. (I followed his advice and was thrilled with my lunch selection). Aside from one douche bag, everyone there seemed really nice and cool. I would go back in a heartbeat if I visit Annapolis again. read more

Been here for drinks a few times, but came in to eat around 6 on a Saturday evening. It wasn't particularly busy but service took far too long. Ordered calamari which was chewy and bland, and a Irish Rubin that they apparently forgot to put corned beef on. I kid you not there were 3 small chunks on the whole sandwich and about half a pound of sourkrout. It was an $18 sandwich for goodness sake, the least you can do is give me a little bit of corned beef. If I could rate this dining experience 0/5 I would. Won't be coming back. read more

Castlebay does an excellent job showing off the type of mediocre restaurants you will find in Annapolis. There are a number of them so you really need to read the reviews carefully. The high rated reviews for food for this place are either friends of the owner or intoxicated reviewers. But aside from the food, that is if you are just drinking, the place gets a higher rating. Very good bartenders and occasionally some outstanding live music. It is in the located towards middle of Main Street so you are right in the middle of all the action. Well, after eating our weight in crabs at Cantler's, finding a parking spot in downtown Annapolis and making the trek up Main Street we were ready for a cool brew. Castlebay is a nice spot to sit, check in on the first official day of college football and banter about with the Bartender about the superiority of our favorite pro teams...of course my Pat's win! There is an emergency order extending licenses that have expired during Covid to be VALID FOR GOVERNMENT ID through the 30 days after the emergency order ends. Emergency order isn't ended yet. I got told my license- normally expired on 9/30 but covered by the emergency order right now valid for driving and identification- wasn't good for ID by their company policy. I'm 27. Not even remotely fake ID. Thanks for making me not want to dine out and help a small business during a hard time. Nice irish pub we definitely enjoyed the crowd last night. You walk in and it screams Irish Pub, wood decor, booths, tall bar tables, there's a seat in the window that looks like it would be real fun to sit int and you can also sit outside. We went for the libations rather than a meal and I was taken care of promptly, the barkeeps did a wonderful job of taking care of everyone and the waitresses found a way though the maze of people to still wait on their tables. I understand the food is pretty good here and we will definitely be back to eat, the service was good, and the crowd was good, not too young on a Friday night. I was paying $6.00 for a captain (rum) and coke. I even spilled a whole glass full of the stuff all over the bar, they replaced it so quick I barely noticed it missing. Ok so I've had bad experiences with run down dives on the coast trying to rip off the hungry desperate tourists. I was trying to avoid putting a damper on our day trip like that and Castle Bay did not disappoint. Great beers on tap, prices were not bad for the area, and the food was fresh-tastic. My favorite thing about the pub was the kooky decor. I'm a big fan of tacky and fun and this is as good as it gets. Think "Irish Adams Family". See my pics for details. I had the Crab Cake Sandwich and my partner-in-dine had a burger. The fries were better than the coleslaw but both were tasty in their own way. My sandwich beat the heck out of the burger too! Although the waitress seemed distracted, tired and bored; she did her job well. She could not answer a few questions about the food but that's all good....must be new or something *shrug*. Castlebay is A GO TO. My friends and I always go here for cheap drinks. The first time we sat down, we could not believe the price of the drinks. The service is great. I wouldn't go for party vibes or a crazy, exciting dinner. The place is well suited to grab a couple drinks with friends and hang out. I eat here after a soccer game and to watch a soccer game. The food was good and well priced. We were able to get the discount that is offered before the Red Skins game started. My cousins took us here for lunch. Im not a big fan of pub food but the menu was traditional Irish food and Im always a fan of ethnic eats! Typical pub, not the cleanest, with nice atmosphere. We sat right next to the window which was nice for me as a tourist. We had the baked brie to start and it was delicious. My cousins husband had bangers and mash, I had an irish ruben and loved it! My cousin had a chicken sandwich and my mom had the fish and chips (she said it was tasteless) Overall I was happy with the meal but yet again, I was jealous we didn't get to try one of the many other places on the strip for lunch. read more

The grilled chicken sandwich tasted subpar at best: the Chicken was tasteless, the sandwich came with a plain supermarket bun, and the toppings were very basic. Not worth 11$. Found this place using google maps on a phone. Definitely a cool pub. They make a mean all-irish black and tan with Guinness and Smithwick's. They also brew their own 3-nuns ale, which is a delightful nitrogen-pulled cream ale with hints of carmel and strawberry. Check it out the next time you're in Annapolis. The beers are priced like they are in Boston (~$5-6) and whatever you do, don't order the alfredo with chicken and broccoli. Literally a big pool of oil made the dish really impossible to eat and it was a whopping $14. It wasn't even anything that inventive. I'd go for the non-pasta dishes.
