Only one bathroom could be used at a time due to weak water pressure and barely any hot water. The host's solution? "Just stagger your showers by 30 minutes." Because obviously, what every vacation needs is a bathroom rotation spreadsheet. We were joined by a dead cockroach in the closet. A true roommate. He paid no rent and still got more consistency than we did. Two bedrooms were in a damp basement with strong "unsolved case" energy. Lights didn't work in multiple rooms. Water dispensers? Empty. For a property with a $500 deposit and a push to buy trip insurance, we expected basic functionality. Instead, we got a scavenger hunt for working utilities. We contacted them during the stay and escalated to Airbnb when nothing improved. The responses were mostly gaslighting and excuses. Airbnb, not the property managers, offered a $200 coupon, which we declined. That wasn't a resolution. It was hush money. Later, we noticed the listing had been quietly edited, changing the details that had misled us. No accountability, no explanation. Just a sweep under the rug once the damage was done. If they rebranded this as a haunted escape room with shower rationing and an emotional support cockroach, maybe it would work. But as a vacation rental? Absolutely not. Cindy opened the Guest House to us and it was amazing. We spent every evening on the porch looking at Mt Shasta, smelling the pines and one evening watching a bear lumber down the driveway. Breakfast was served at the McCloud Hotel. We placed our order the night before and the meals were made to order, on time, a perfect portion and very delicious. Sight seeing, around the area, was really fun. We fished, played golf at the McCloud golf course, swam in the river, took drives and saw where family had lived. Cindy has pleasant staff and we enjoyed chatting with Nicole. This is an out of the way and beautiful part of California. I strongly suggest the Guest House or the McCloud Hotel.

The Mt Shasta Police Are conducting surveillance on the building and looking for anyone who has stayed there to file a theft complaint if you have been ripped off there. The hotel claims they have a contactless check in and check out system which provides a door code via text messaging when in fact they don't have lobby or staff because the police shut them down. The comforter on the bed was urine stained with dirt grime and holes but covered up by a duvet top sheet to hide the filth. The bathroom ceiling has black mold, shower door broken and wall plugs so loose chargers won't stay plugged in. The Mt Shasta Police took a theft complaint from me after the manager refused to refund over $700 they took from me through a Trip Advisor booking. Do not stay here, call the Mt Shasta Police if you did!

Room 10 in the tastefully restored midcentury motel was our choice because it offers arctic AC! Seriously, this small LG unit is quiet and effective! The two queen beds were perfect. We pushed them together to make a giant family bed for our two enormous beasts. Don't worry, we are seasoned travelers and brought king sheets to put on top for the dogs. The mattresses are memory foam! We love them as we have a tempurpedic at home. The train is far enough in the distant from this room that it's quite pleasant to hear the sound across the river. Make your coffee and stroll over to view Mount Shasta from the benches provided in the morning, but the really photo op is just after sunset when the mountain glows. Note, the pine tree sap will drip on your vehicle if you park in the designated spot for room 10. If you back in, it gets on the windshield. Nose first, not so much. We travel with windex and microfiber cloth, so we were prepared. What's nice is all the options for a stay at this resort. If you want a cabin with a hot tub it's available, or an Airstream, the have rows of them. It's a nice walk down to the botanical gardens and the river. This would be an ideal location for a group event. Many folks recommended coming back in the Fall, so hope to return again.

Only gripe was the tv cutting out of service. Not so crowded either. I would've stayed another night but in all honesty there's not much else to do. Steve, the owner is very friendly and accommodating. The town of McCloud was build by the McCloud Mill family for the loggers and sawmill workers who would come to work from spring through fall each year milling trees. Once that industry died out the town has survived through other means such as tourism. McCloud in particular is known for putting on some fantastic festivals through their active Chamber of Commerce and other organizations. Their annual Mushroom Festival brings in over 60,000 people from all over California, Oregon, Washington, and Nevada for the weekend. It offers a variety of Music, Food, Wine, a mushroom farmers market, a series of educational Mushroom classes by professional mycologists from all over the world. And a Crafters/Art market featuring unique, one of a kind and stunning works of art. At the base of Mt. Shasta, McCloud is 3.5 miles from the town of Mt. Shasta. It feels like a home, not like a hotel. Also, price here is so freaking reasonable it seems unreal. It was midweek when we stayed, but the cost was $80! Every other place I called was much much more, and I promise you they would not have been as sweet, homey, or quaint.
