In looking around initially for an upholstery company I learned that, unfortunately, the industry is often populated by dishonest, shortcut-taking scumbags. Then I found Castillo's. Justin, the owner, has hands-on involvement in every single part of the process--it is more than just a job for him. I needed to reupholster an enormous sofa (I'm talking 500+ pounds!) my grandparents had custom built in 1947. It was a complicated job, and also an emotionally-weighted one. From the beginning, Justin was appreciative and respectful of my piece, and transparent about the entire process: pricing, suppliers, time frames, deconstruction and reconstruction, etc. I had learned SO much by the time my sofa was done! When it was time for delivery, Justin and his team saw the job all the way through to the end, carrying the (beautifully-reupholstered) monster up 4 1/2 flights of stairs, maneuvering it into my condo (doors had to be removed, tight corners rounded...you name it,) and putting everything back together when it was all set. We had dining chairs re-upholstered, and they came out great. Castillo's has a huge selection of fabric swaths and they were great at helping me find the right style and color among all the choices. Way, way more options than in a fabric store! They suggested replacing the foam on the chairs. I didn't think it was needed, but decided to go with it, and on seeing the result, it was clear that was a good choice - made the shape of the chairs way less floppy. The workmanship on the chairs looked great. And another awesome thing was that Justin surprised me by offering to bring the chairs to my house because he happened to be already traveling out to the area. I can't recommend Castillo's highly enough! We took in leather chair and ottoman that has been in my family for 3 generations to be reupholstered. The staff was friendly and helpful as we selected new leather - answering our questions, explaining how they would make improvements to correct things which hadn't been done quite right on the previous reupholstery job, helping us make decisions. I felt they really knew what they were talking about. In addition to the reupholstering, the chair legs needed to be refinished and the ottoman needed the legs replaced which they were able to do to match the chair. The chair and ottoman were delivered in the quoted amount of time. The workmanship is exceptional. There was a concern after a couple of days that the color of the leather might not be what we had ordered. We contacted Castillo's and they were extremely receptive and diligent in sorting it all out. Justin came to the house the look at the chair, took a piece of the leather sample we had gotten when we ordered, and spent time following up with the leather supplier. We appreciated the length to which he went to make sure we had indeed gotten the correct leather and his desire to make sure we were happy with the finished product. A few months later I took 2 small footstools in to be recovered. Since they needed so little fabric Justin (the other one!) offered to show me samples of remnants they had which would save me money rather than ordering a larger minimum yardage. I was able to find something I liked and placed the order. A couple hours after I got home Justin called to say he had realized I was the same one who had had the leather chair done a few months earlier and told me the footstool job would be on them as a thank you for what happened with the chair! Very unexpected and so nice! Castillo's offers top quality workmanship AND customer service. All the staff are friendly and helpful and they really do place high priority on making sure the customer is happy. We brought photos of a set of dining room chairs to Castillo's and one other business, and got a better price quote and a better feeling for the work to be done here. They told us they would pick up the chairs in about 3 weeks. One day about 4 weeks later we got a call to schedule a pickup. We were home so they picked up in the morning. Imagine our amazement when they called at the end of the day to say they could deliver the finished chairs the same day! The work involved new fabric for the chair seats and chair backs (which are inset so double-sided), plus new cushioning for the seats. We are delighted with the quality of the work and the pleasant way we were treated at the shop and at our home. Hmmm. A number of good reviews are here related to furniture / pillow reupholstering and there are a few related to poor followup and service. My experience was disappointing and mainly relates to the latter customer followup, service and professionalism and maybe fair pricing. My intention was in having Castillo Upholstery produce a 4'X5' rectangle outdoor cover for a new wood patio table and using readily available Sunbrella Canvas material (umbrella type). I went in personally to give the details to Justin and provide pictures (on 10/18) so a quote could be produced. He said I'd get a callback or email with the details likely within a day or so. After a week (10/25) with no response I went back to their shop arriving about :30 minutes after their scheduled opening. It was still closed. Then sent an email expressing some disappointment. It took a few more days (10/29) for an email response that tells me he'd just sent the details to his designer. Finally, two days later I got the quote for the materials and labor totaling $720. I recognized from just pure logic that this was a bit high so checked with a competing local Seattle upholstery company (same yardage in materials and i assume same labor involved) and received an immediate quote of $326. Sooo, maybe in that it's a boutique, one or two person business, located in a residential area of Upper Queen Anne, and maybe their costs are just higher, but the quoted price was not even close. Lesson learned. It's just worth taking the extra effort and time to not wait for the first estimate and check out competing businesses and even online resources for such services. read more

My mother gave me her Scandinavian modern couch that she's had for 20 years or so. It's been in her house almost as long as I can remember, but her cat used it as a scratching post and stained it as well, so it needs some love. I live in Magnolia and went on-line searching for upholsterers in my area. I wanted to re-cover the seats of my 12 dining room chairs. I visited 5 separate businesses from Greenwood to Ballard to Interbay, and I got estimates from all of them. With the exception of one which was very expensive, the other 4 were all in the same price range. But in each store, they pointed to a vast wall of sample books, and told me to come in any time and spend as much time as I needed going through the samples to find what I wanted :( :( :( Then I saw a positive review for Castillo's (sorry - can't remember where) and that it is located close by on Queen Anne. So I made one more trip. I was so pleased. The shop was neat, clean, and with a professional decor. Like I had everyone else, I told them what I was looking for (color, informal, dog-proof cleanable but not "plastic", etc.) Instead of pointing to a wall of books, Justin pulled books of materials that would meet my needs, and broke the different types down for me. He made suggestions, and offered his opinion when I asked for it. On my first trip, we narrowed it down to several brands which he wrote down for me. Then I went home to get more photos and more samples of the other furniture in the house that I wanted the chairs to be compatible with. When I returned the second time, he again helped me look at the various fabrics and colors up against my home samples and photos. I appreciated him being willing to offer suggestions and his opinion when asked for - others just said "it is up to you, whatever you like...." Which is true, but sometimes you want input from someone else - especially a professional. I now have my chairs and they are lovely. I am very happy with the workmanship, and how they look in my home. read more

My almost new mid-century reproduction chesterfield popped a button on the seat for the second time. I was having some difficulty scheduling a repair time with the person who fixed the first popped button and decided to call Castillo's. I talked to Justin who suggested they bring it in and take a look at the construction. I thought that was a great idea. In fact there were a couple of design/construction flaws that meant that buttons popping up was going to continue happening. We had an old chair, passed down from my grandmother, that needed some attention. It had elegantly curved arms and an upholstered back and seat but the padding was bottoming out and the fabric had frayed. We visited two shops in the Seattle area, and explored many more online, and finally selected the fabric we wanted. But the price quotes we got were outrageous. In one case, they wanted to put an expensive spring seat on the chair, which had not been designed for one. Finally, we found Castilo's on upper Queen Anne.
