    The best Italian beef
    Amy S.

One of the best Italian beef sandwiches I've ever had! Located right off Phantom lake, this seems to be a nice little local bar that's serving up some good food. Stopped in for some drinks and ended up ordering dinner just based on some of the plates I saw coming out of the kitchen. I had the Italian beef with cheese and mushrooms. Usually I'll order this without the au jus just because it can be sort of salty, but their is delicious and not overwhelmingly riddled with sodium. Bar area is pretty typical, it's nice that they have a parking lot and boat slips outside. Staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. Everyone from the bartender to the cook, who came out of the kitchen and chatted with me for a bit. Can't wait to go back!

    Half pound cheeseburger

We wanted to try someplace new on a recent trip to the Elegant Farmer. We ate in the dining room which was nice. There was a separate bar room and it had a crew of people in their 20s and 30s who seemed to be having a great time. The bartender took our food order and another employee brought out the food when it was ready. I had the Italian beef sandwich which was tasty but the bun they used was one of the best I've ever had. My wife had the ribeye sandwich which she liked and our daughter had the cheeseburger that was huge. All of our lunches included crinkle cut fries which were delicious. The only downside was that there was a weird smell in the place.

They came out piping hot. The buffalo garlic was listed under hot sauces but it is not hot IMO. We had carrots and celery with blue cheese on the side. We had also ordered onion rings - they came out hot but we would skip them next time - kind of bland. The place was packed, so it was a little tough to get service but the staff was hustling. Our server was was very friendly and helpful when we were able to get her to our table. TomKen's gives typical Wisco neighborhood bar vibes, with lots of local memorabilia on the walls and several TVs with sports on. We may have to go back and try the fried chicken - tables all around us were ordering big baskets of fried chicken and all the sides.

I had a chance to…read moreget to West Allis on a recent weekend and decided to try TomKen's that I had heard good things about. I had passed by a couple of times when I was near the fairgrounds. TomKen's has classic sports bar vibes. They were busy when I visited on a Saturday afternoon. It took a little while to get my order in. But the people were nice and there was a Brewers game on TV and I didn't mind hanging out for awhile. I got the famous friendly chicken dinner. This was a 4-piece half chicken dinner with coleslaw, fries and Italian bread. It was a lot of food especially for the price. The chicken was juicy and the batter was nicely salty. The fries were the crinkle variety--nothing special on their own but a nice potato-ey complement to the chicken. The cole slaw was solid--a little sweet and not too mayonnaise heavy. One should not eat fried chicken every day of course, but I would definitely come back for a treat.

Of the bookmarks I had within reasonable driving distance, Sideliners Pub & Grill intrigued me the most. I ended up ordering the three piece beer battered perch with potato pancakes for the side and wings for an appetizer with half Cajun dry rub and half Jamaican BBQ jerk sauce. I thought it was interesting that the jerk sauce was specifically labeled as "Jamaican BBQ jerk" and it ended up being an accurate description. It was more BBQ flavored than jerk flavored and had almost no heat to it like jerk normal does. The Cajun rub, on the other hand, had great heat and Cajun flavor. The jerk sauce wasn't bad, but my preference was the Cajun rub. In a picture I saw of the potato pancakes they looked like they were Italian breaded, similar to mozzarella sticks. Again, I was intrigued. Unfortunately, the pancakes didn't live up to my expectations. The breading didn't have much Italian seasoning and the pancakes were like mashed potatoes formed into disks rather than more common potato pancakes that are shredded potato flavored with onion. The pancakes were my least favorite part of the meal. The perch didn't taste like yellow lake perch and was probably something cheaper like pike perch. Even though I did like the beer batter, it wasn't exactly was I was hoping for when I ordered perch, but it wasn't bad.

The place is veteran owned and has a military flare to the decor. For our area, this is welcome and we have nothing like it. They also frequently have live music, and I do love me some live music. The service has been great both time I was there. I sat at the bar the first time and a table the second...just to make sure the service was great in both locations! Of course bar service is always faster because you are right in front of them, but I will say I did not have to wait at any point to sit, order, or pay. They were friendly and genuinely wanted to make sure everything tasted as good as it looked. When I go to places that run specials I am voted less likely to order off the menu and I have stuck with that philosophy with SteelTank. The first time I had a steak and shrimp pasta. It was so good I could not stop eating it. I ate nearly all of it and had zero regrets, but I was happy I had a few bites left to enjoy the next day. Second stop, Sausage & Pepperoni stuffed Bavarian pretzel. This pizza of the week is delicious! The pretzel is cut in half and stuffed and not hollowed out as most places do. You can see from the pictures it is stuffed and you can taste the pizza. Greens with a pizza you say? YES! So good, the vinaigrette dressing that is on that pretty little salad is making my mouth water as I type! Specials were not mentioned either time I went. The specials are posted on Facebook and that is how I knew about SteelTank and what I should order. That would be my only complaint, when you receive a menu patrons should be told what the specials are - or - post it somewhere so people know.
