Richard was quick to respond via email and most of the questions could be answered via email and sending photos, then a phone call for follow ups and to schedule the appointments to remove the railing and reinstall it. I was a little nervous because the job was so small that Richard didn't think he needed to visit the site to confirm prices or the work needed, but decided to move forward since he had a very competitive and reasonable quote compared to others (cheaper than another company by a significant amount). Scheduled the work and Richard's team came out and removed the railing very quickly and carefully, cleaning up any messes. My household was without a railing on the stairs for a week, then the workers arrived to reinstall. It took 3 hours or so to install it, and they were careful and did good work, cleaning up as always. The railing looks amazing. They blasted off the old paint and replaced it with what appears to be a matte powder coating that matched the same white we had before and looks great. The bars they used to fill the gaps look identical to the others, so the entire railings look brand new and complete. Richard and his team even installed a horizontal safety bar by request because the gap between the floor and railing was too tall. I'm very pleased. It was a complex job with four other subcontractors involved across design, electrical, landscaping, and stucco finishing. Ignacio, the owner, was always available by phone or text and willing to talk through ideas with us. He also would send pictures during fabrication to ensure we were aligned on design details. He was upfront about change orders, and whenever something wasn't quite right, he did his best to make it right. That kind of communication and accountability isn't something you get with every contractor. Our fence sits on a tricky slope, and Ignacio really sweated the details. He had to build the driveway gate just right and pour the concrete track at precisely the correct angle to match--and he totally nailed it. His team brought the heavy gate out several times to ensure it stayed plumb throughout its travel along the slope. However, Jackie, (not clear to me if she's the co-owner or Ignacio's wife) finalizes pricing and pretty much runs the show. For our project, we had picked IVS to do the work, but the price kept increasing by thousands of dollars. I asked to speak with Ignacio since these changes were inconsistent with what I discussed with him and put them week above our other quotes, but Jackie said that's not necessary since she decides the pricing. They also charge tax on materials, which no other fencers do (since they're already paying tax to Home Depot, etc.). These business practices felt disingenuous to me and like bait and switch. I've had issues in the past with businesses like this that once the work begins they'll change order you again and ask for more money. So we did not use them. For this fence, we received multiple quotes. Two companies were in the $9-10K range and IVS was around $12K. All were licensed and bonded. We went with the lowest quote and are extremely happy with our fence.

When I finally expressed my frustration, he admitted he had intentionally been ignoring me because of the earlier misunderstanding and offered to send someone to finish the outstanding tasks, "if that's what I was upset about." That level of unprofessionalism was far more disappointing than the few remaining tasks on the project. Misunderstandings happen, but they shouldn't result in giving a customer the silent treatment and leaving a job unfinished.
