$630 to replace a pressure relief valve in 15 minutes is a complete money grab, and as an…read moreexperienced plumber, he knows this too. Unfortunately, I showed obvious desperation to get a water pressure issue fixed and this consciously factored into the calculation for the repair cost. He was responsive early on and after hours to one email, but the reality is that he took advantage of the situation and I worry that he is doing the same to all of his customers. For this reason, I would recommend always getting a second quote, ask for itemized costs, and run his quote by a trusted family member or friend to get a independent opinion of the price. The cost of the PRV is $250 max so that means labor was billed at $380. Assuming 45 total minutes from when he arrived, time to go buy the PRV, and complete the install, means his labor rate is at least $500/hour. This wasn't an after-hours repair either, it was at 10am on a Wednesday and 14 days after I made the appointment. Don't tell me it was in a hard spot to access either because we both know it wasn't that tough plus it took only 15 minutes to replace. The part that bothered me most is that he could not tell me the cost of the PRV (that he bought 25 minutes before) because he "just charges it with his credit card so he doesn't know." That is a remarkably shady and outright awful response and that answer alone should make him ashamed of his own business conduct. He could have very easily checked his credit card account, sent it to me later or just knew the cost off the top of his head because he replaces these exact valves all of the time and 100% knows how much it cost. In fact, it is the same exact model PRV that was installed with my house 9 years ago so it is almost impossible that he does not know the cost of it after replacing over 100+ of these in his 25 year career. It's clear he didn't want to tell me because I would end up calculating the labor costs and realize that he overcharged me for the repair. Even if there is a good reason for his response, then he had the opportunity to explain this to me when he was here, but he did not. Sure, I could have rejected his quote, asked more questions about the price or called other plumbers, but the reality is that the situation was stressful for me and I made the mistake of blindly accepting his quote. However, this situation cannot be disputed as a prime example of someone who took advantage of a customer's anxiety for their own personal gain. For a company that prides themselves in honest prices and service with integrity, I experienced the exact opposite of these values which is very difficult for me to grasp as a customer. As someone who donates to charities, I can only hope that he uses the roughly $250 upcharge by donating it to one of the charities he lists on his website. The use of flat rate pricing is commonly very consumer friendly, however it can be used to deceive customers into believing that they are getting the better end of the deal when in reality, they end up paying more in the end without ever knowing it vs. T&M (but feeling like they got a good deal). The research and statistics are there to support this and he has made the decision to knowingly use this tactic for his own personal benefit. Flat rate should be used as an amount not to exceed and can be overridden by T&M if it turns out to be less than the flat rate after the repair is finished. That is what countless other companies do with their pricing. Instead, you knowingly inflate the flat rate to give the impression that you are acting in the best interest of the customer but actually squeezing more money out of them. In the end, you charged me $500/hour for labor. Flat rate or not, do you really believe this is a fair way to price your services? Does honesty include charging $380 for a 15 min repair? The hourly rate is probably much higher because the cost of the PRV was likely 30% lower because of the bulk pricing discounts through his distributor. So $600/hour? Two stars because his wife was nice on the phone and returned my inquiry quickly.

I am new to the Asheville, NC area, and when I asked my neighbors to recommend a plumber and an…read moreelectrician I was told that Jadon Kabernick at Sound Mind does both. I reached out to Jadon via email ( soundmindwnc@gmail.com ) and explained the situation, advising that it was not an emergency, but needed to be dealt with sooner rather than later. The bolts that hold the commode to the floor had corroded through and the commode could now be rotated around the central wax seal. I also had some minor electrical work that needed to be done. Jadon was able to come out within three days. He is a very pleasant young man, and is polite and careful. He had to shim up the flange that the commode bolted to, as it was below floor level, and then install new bolts. He also replaced the flush valve, which had started to run intermittently. I also had him replace a standard light switch with a dimmer in the dining room, and replace two 4 foot fluorescent fixtures in the garage with new LED fixtures. Jadon was extremely easy to communicate with, showed a great understanding of what needed to be done, and completed the work rapidly and to my complete satisfaction. He also provided a quote to install a below grade sink and pump in my basement that we will tackle sometime in the next month or so. I am extremely happy with his work, and he has my whole-hearted endorsement. His website is at https://www.facebook.com/people/Sound-Mind-Plumbing-Electric/61580202280715/

I was recommended TPH by another plumber I know who mostly does install. They came out the next day. We had bought the house a few months ago and didn't really know anything about the system which is a grinder pump. They were pretty sure it was electrical but the access needed to be pumped. They took the initiative to coordinate with the septic pump firm and got them out that afternoon. Next day they fixed the issue in a manner of a few hours. In addition, Jason, Byron and Ronnie were so professional and just good dudes. My dog thought the same thing and he's pretty picky about who he warms up to. I see a few negative reviews about the hourly cost. That just seems out of touch. We've had other plumbers both here and in Dallas and TPH's rate is right in line and frankly better service. I'm canceling my other annual contract and will be using TPH.

I dislike writing anything but a positive review, however in this case I need to share my…read moreexperience so you can judge for yourself whether to use Above and Below Plumbing or not. When I pay $150 an hour for a service my expectation is that I will receive a recommendation for a solution that will work, I am paying for their expertise. In this case I followed Larry's advice and spent $308 to install a faucet and sink and put in a PVC pipe from the sink to the drainage pipe. I originally planned to install a garbage disposal too. Larry informed me that the outflow drainpipe was too high for the disposal and the sink would not drain properly. Larry said that he could either drill into the concrete wall and lower the drainpipe, which would be very expensive, or we could ditch the disposal, use a shorter drain assembly and it should be fine. Because I couldn't install the disposal, I needed to purchase a new drain assembly to connect to the sink directly instead. Larry was very helpful with this and showed me on Amazon a shorter drain assembly then the one he had with him. He then installed the new faucet and the new PVC piping for the sink's drain but did not tighten it all up so I could adjust it and hook it up to the shorter drain assembly when it arrived. He charged me $308 for his services. Once the piece arrived, we finished connecting the sink ourselves. The drain was indeed too high for the water to flow properly. It also leaked in the connection after the drainpipe that he had installed. I called Larry and explained the situation. His response was that the drain was clogged and he had noticed the clog while he was there and used a screwdriver to get some of the clog out. He told me to use some liquid plumber or snake the drain and blamed me for not moving the drainpipe. To me this just went from bad to worse. I do not understand why he would not unclog a drain he knew was clogged while he was there or at the bare minimum tell me about it. He did not offer to come back and fix the problem and blamed me for not using the more expensive solution, despite his advice and assurance that the solution he charged me $308.00 for would work. At this point I will not be using Above and Below Plumbing ever again and will find someone else to fix the problem.
