Wow! Such an awesome, authentic spot that really lives up to its name!…read more The atmosphere inside is great, and it was surprisingly busy during lunch. Despite that, we were served very quickly. We ordered the mushroom and Italian sausage pizza, wings with BBQ sauce, the three-layer lasagna, soda and pina colada. The lasagna came with fresh garlic bread and a salad with a huge selection of dressings. The lasagna was so tender it literally melted in my mouth, and the portions were huge. We actually had to take the pizza home because we couldn't finish everything. But the biggest surprise was the price. We paid only $49 for such a delicious and complete meal! That's honestly hard to beat these days. We're definetely coming back. It's really hard to find this kind of food, service, and portion size at such a reasonable price!

The prices were a little high especially considering there are three other places for pizza in 15 minutes' driving time, one of which has the same quality, the two other better. On my pizza, and I know it could have been different for others, the dough was raw on the top half. **see photo What really irked me, and I hear it's changed now, was that you ordered at the counter and left a tip at that time. Before you even had service. Who was I tipping and for what exactly? I heard it's changed but this is a review on my experience. The service was nice, the atmosphere was alright, pretty much what it used be, with a fresh coat of paint, to when it was the former business. I find the interior a little cramped with the furniture they have. Just my .02¢ We will go back for a second chance.

This restaurant is where the former "Chinese Mexican Burrito" was, and they've done a great job of remodeling and updating the space. We went for dinner and ordered 2 10 inch pizzas, both with 1 topping, and 2 fountain drinks. With tax and tip, $30. A little steep when compared to other pizza in the area, but not outrageous. First, the good: the sauce is nice, not too sweet and not too thin. There was plenty of sausage on my pizza. The not-great: I suspect the crusts are pre-made. While the thin was really thin, it was still soft in the center. The cheese isn't gooey, but more gloppy. The "hot" sausage is just Italian sausage; not spicy Italian, just Italian. The questionable: the menu says the toasted ravioli is filled with nacho cheese. As a native St. Louisan, that is unforgivable. The salad bar is offered at $2.99 for a one-trip with a meal, or $4.99 unlimited. The "bar" consists of very basic iceberg mix, some cheese, and an assortment of dressings. If the selection is that limited, it should be really fresh and inviting. It was not. All in all, I'll give them more time to get settled, and try again. We love supporting local businesses, and hope this place is successful.

If you don't smoke avoid this place at all costs. I am a smoker and even I was super bummed by the atmosphere as smoking is allowed in this place. It was just depressing. It seemed like half the town was here and they were all frantically lighting up. Nothing like trying to eat in the middle of a thick forest fire. Bottom line, I think for food you can most definitely do better. For ambience think the bar from Cheers, but with dim the lights and Smokey the Bear passed out in the corner slowly dying of cancer with a bottle of Scotch in front of him and a Newport hanging out of his mouth.

Unless you want to drive to Branson there's not too many other choices closer. So we decided to give Mr. Gilbert's place a try. It was about 7:30 PM when we arrived. Parking was a nightmare because the lot was entirely filled and they actually had a man in the parking lot helping people to find a place to park. We eventually did find a place to park and entered the restaurant. It was packed. We were greeted warmly and asked if we had a reservation. We did not have a reservation but we're seated immediately in the back dining area. Our drink orders were taken immediately and we were warned that if we were ordering a deep dish pizza that it would take anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour. We were good with that. We ordered the MR. GILBERTI'S SPECIALTY which was a deep dish pizza with Italian Sausage, Pepperoni, Canadian Bacon, Black Olives, Mushrooms, Marinated Green Peppers & Red Onions. SMALL 28.50 * MEDIUM 34.25 * LARGE 40.95. This is not your typical thick bread Chicago style pizza that you're accustomed to. Instead this was a crust which is more dense and approaching a cracker like consistency around the edges. It seems that the cheese is laid down first with the rest of the toppings layered on top and the sauce is the last thing that goes on. It's like an upside down pizza. However if you think about it, it's brilliant because the sauce doesn't make the crust get soggy on the bottom since it is on the top. My wife and I both agreed that it was one of the best tasting pizzas that we'd ever had. And a small was plenty for the two of us. For dessert we ordered the strawberry cream cake which was made in the house by a culinary school graduate who just also happened to be the owner. The strawberry cake layers were separated by a cheesecake filling. It was to-the-moon delicious. This is one of those rare restaurant finds. It's the kind of place you just might drive by without giving it a second thought. But I'll tell you, we are so glad that we took a chance because the pizza was fantastic. It is a very casual ambience but the staff was extremely friendly we felt like we were amongst friends. This will definitely be on our repeat visit list next time we come into this area.

And let me tell you, the pizza is only a 14"....not that deep. I don't mind paying...but this is so out of line compared to what you get. Even a straight pepperoni or sausage pizza..you're paying plenty for what you get. Good taste...but dang have they continued to raise the prices. Salad for 2: $20.75 and the salad is smaller than it ever used to be. Toppings aren't as plentiful as they used to be. And the dressing...the salad didn't have squat. And I paid 2.50 more to get a couple of sides of more dressing....and they're coming in the small plastic ramekin. Gee, give me a break with the nickel and dime junk...when you're already charging $21 for the salad. I have always loved this place. And I can pay whatever....but out of principle...I won't for this place anymore. Sad...as I'm from Chicago and love what this place offered in the past. But now...I suggest Pizza by the Chef in Hollister. Want a meat pizza...Hercules at that place is awesome.
