4th St. Pizza - Incredible pizza!

Went during lunch time on a Friday and took advantage of their lunch specials. Their pizza dough was airy and crispy, their mozzarella cheese and marinara sauce were very flavorful. Had a salad with their homemade lemon poppyseed dressing that was really good. If I lived here, this would be a place I would go back to often.

I have mixed feelings about this place because it started out very frustrating, with parking, a small waiting area, and a cranky host. It ended on a good note, however. I'll start off by saying that parking was really frustrating, because we had to drive around the block several times before we were able to find something that opened up. I realize that many businesses share this street, and want to point out that this is not the fault of 4th Street Pizza. Inside, it was very crowded with many people waiting. The area is so small that it wasn't easy to open the door. Once we got in, it took about 10 minutes for someone to take our name for the waiting list. She was very cranky, but later I would come to understand why. We were told of a 45-minute wait and that we could wait outside if we liked, where they would call our name when ready. We waited on a bench and saw a lot of people come and go who got there after us. Thankfully, my fiancé asked them about it, and they seated us right away. I think they forgot about us. Once we were seated, the service was very slow to start. Our appetizer got there in a decent amount of time, but the pizza took forever, and our drinks sat empty. Once the pizza arrived, it was huge and tasted great! Are drinks continuing to sit empty? Normally, my rating would be low for a situation like this, but then I realized that our server was working all the tables in there and had only one bus person for help! I can see why the server was cranky. I would have been too if I were the only server at a busy restaurant during rush hour. This entire restaurant had only one restroom that looked like it had not been cleaned since the Bicentennial. Again, it is probably a staffing issue. We would definitely go again to experience the pizza.

The concept is genuinely fun: you sit down and feel like you've boarded a vintage rail car, complete with that "on the way to somewhere better" energy. Unfortunately, the illusion peaks a bit earlier than the appetizers. After seeing glowing Yelp reviews, we arrived expecting small-town culinary magic. What we got felt more like Amtrak dining car, but the train is delayed and the kitchen is understaffed. Service was pleasant--no complaints there--just moving at the leisurely pace of a scenic rail tour through the Midwest. The food itself lands firmly in the "fine, technically edible" category, which is not what you hope for when the internet has promised greatness. The highly praised wings arrived absolutely committed to their sauce--gloppy enough that you start wondering if the chicken was merely an accessory. A light brushing and sauce served on the side would have kept things from turning into an edible slip-and-slide. The French onion soup also took a creative detour from tradition. Swiss cheese instead of gruyère sets the tone, and from there it becomes less "soup" and more "onion-forward gravy experiment." After a couple bites, the rest felt like a suggestion rather than an obligation. The roast beef sandwich leaned heavily into bread architecture while treating the roast beef like an optional insert. The meat itself had a distinctly packaged deli-cold-cut energy--efficient, but not exactly artisanal. Even the house salad managed to surprise, featuring tiny cheese pellets that suggest innovation in texture design, if not necessarily in enjoyment. And then there's the atmosphere note: smoky in a general sense, just not in the dining room--so you get ambiance without full immersion. The only real head-scratcher, though, is the level of restriction around what guests can bring in--at one point making you feel like your own onions might be considered contraband. It's a rare dining experience where you leave thinking, "I wasn't allowed to improve my meal, and somehow I still considered it." In the end, if this represents top-tier dining in Cuba, Missouri, then Michelin inspectors might want to keep the train rolling straight through without stopping. It's not a disaster--just a very enthusiastic theme restaurant where the theme outruns the kitchen by a few stations.

You would not know there is a global pandemic in here. No masks, no social distancing, and nothing disposable to prevent transferring germs. There were 3 of us so we ordered hot wings, a hand tossed pepperoni pizza, and a thin crust bacon cheeseburger pizza. The wings were large and well cooked and there are a lot of wing sauce options on the menu. The hand tossed pepperoni pizza came out first. It was fine but didn't have a ton of flavor. It was obvious they did not make the crust in house. Next the bacon cheeseburger pizza came out. It was interesting and decent. Again, premade crust. The menu describes it as beef, applewood smoked bacon, red onions, cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, topped with shredded lettuce and dill pickle chips. We received it with no onions and what they didn't mention is that it has ketchup and mustard on it. It had a strong yellow mustard flavor. The flavor was strongly reminiscent of a McDonald's Cheeseburger! I'd order that one again even though it was a bit odd. It seemed like most people were ordering the fried dinners. Service was just ok. They do serve beer which is rare in this town! We'll be back!

The beers are great--especially the IPAs, wheats and stouts. The food is very good as well--my favorite is the jalapeño Mac and cheese bite appetizer but the burgers, salads and pizza are also good. I like to sit at the bar and the bartender that is there most of the time is awesome--so helpful, friendly and efficient. However, the service yesterday was very lacking. We counted 11 staff members just standing around and talking to each other while totally ignoring us. Three were at the end of the bar and we sat there for about 5-10 minutes before the bartender came out from the kitchen and gave us a menu. We were the only ones sitting at the bar and it would have been nice if one of those three employees had told us that the bartender would be coming out soon or at least give us a menu. The bartender was very good though--quite friendly and helpful--she gave us several samples of beer and food recommendations. We ordered the bites and a mushroom Swiss burger which came out exceedingly fast and both were very good. We had several Giddy Goats which were super tasty and cold...my boyfriend isn't a huge fan of stouts but he loved this one! We checked out the store on our way out and my boyfriend decided to buy a six-pack to go. He went back to the bar, holding his wallet out to pay but all the employees just ignored him for several minutes so he got tired of waiting and left without buying it. We don't understand why there were so many employees milling around doing nothing and ignoring patrons? Are the employees not taught to cover various tasks? Even so, they should be aware of the customers' needs and find the employee responsible for that task. I could understand if it was super busy but it was a Sunday afternoon and the place was nearly empty . I love this place and will continue to be a regular customer but hope for much better service next time!

The service was very good. A friend and I shared some tacos and an order of wings (which were tastier than the tacos). Makes for a nice stop before heading away from the interstate where restaurants are fewer and farther between. Reasonably priced.
