Vasuda Salon - Before - curly, coily hair

Incredible salon and service! My son has hated his coily, curly hair. He plays a lot of sports so…read moreit's often frizzy and hard to manage. Other salons I called or took him to said there was nothing they could do to relax his hair and make less coily (and be "in style") - they said his hair wouldn't hold or it would break it off. I called Salon Vasuda and initially talked about my son's hair and asked for their recommendation. They spent the time to talk through options on the phone (the other salons didn't do that) and I felt like they really understood curly hair. For our appointment, Emmitt was AMAZING - he really knows curly hair. he gave 2 options and then his recommendation based on what look my son was going for. He took the time to explain everything. The outcome was exactly what my son wanted which I honestly didn't think would come out as well as it did. I've never seen my son smile so much or be so happy about his hair. This is our new salon! So glad to have found it!

Let me start by saying - I hadn't had a haircut in 3+ years before Vasuda, partially because of the…read morepandemic, but mostly because of some mediocre experiences at other salons. As a white woman with very curly hair, it felt like every salon I tried to go to either tried to cut my hair like it was just straight or ~wavy~, or like my curls didn't respond to the usual tips & tricks like it was expected to. The end result was always the same - a hair style that was fine, but that I ended up spending months creating a new regimen of products, tools, and routine to care for. Inevitably, I would try to switch stylist or salons and feel the same way over and over. Enter Katie! Not only did this woman actually explain to me - for the first time in my life - what my hair texture and curl pattern were like, she also explained every step of the process as she went. Why she was cutting it where, what it would do, how to deal with common issues (pyramid head! frizz! being able to pull it back!). She walked me through her product selection, made me attempt the same styling techniques, taught me how to use a diffuser - all so when I washed my hair for the first time 3 days later, I actually had a good starting point. I still had to learn and develop my exact routine, but the months between weren't spent with my hair in a bun or a braid to hide a haircut I didn't really want like usual. I literally cried in the salon when Katie showed me the end result. I can easily say it was the first time in 27 years I left a salon feeling confident in my choice, in the result, and feeling like I could keep it up moving forward. If you're nervous about haircuts, if you want to actually understand your hair, or if you just want a bomb-ass stylist who knows what they're doing - then I HIGHLY recommend Vasuda, and ESPECIALLY Katie!

I probably don't have to elaborate on how my cut looked when I left that last time. New barbers and shop owners like this don't understand that once they've burned through the neighborhood like in the Wedgwood population they're kinda done unless they dramatically improve they run out of customers. It's not like a salon where you make an appointment and have a reputation to upkeep. Cutting hair is a technical skill. Anyone can be taught to cut and give a good cut. If a barber needs training it's not complicated to get the resources, most of training now is free thanks to the internet, or they can get the right person to show a barber the correct technique. Professionalism in being a barber and as a hair operator is extremely important since this personal service is regulated and managed by a health regulatory agency of our state government. If shop operators are treating customers poorly this could be a sign that other serious issues could also be involved in running this business. Usually these shops get multiple violations from the state board and health department. I've seen a massive increase in "Barber shops" crop up in the last 5 years. They seem to disappear as quickly as they appear. This means to me that something has become appealing to getting a quick barber license and just winging it. There are good barbers, and good hair stylists. There are also bad ones. Look at the reviews of a person's skills. No need to do a lot of research and remember that everyone has a bad day. Treating customers like crap and retaliation on a repeat good customer is an obvious vote for marking a business to go into the "no" pile, especially when your personal safety is concerned.
