It's not like a salon where you make an appointment and have a reputation to upkeep. Cutting hair is a technical skill. Anyone can be taught to cut and give a good cut. If a barber needs training it's not complicated to get the resources, most of training now is free thanks to the internet, or they can get the right person to show a barber the correct technique. Professionalism in being a barber and as a hair operator is extremely important since this personal service is regulated and managed by a health regulatory agency of our state government. If shop operators are treating customers poorly this could be a sign that other serious issues could also be involved in running this business. Usually these shops get multiple violations from the state board and health department. I've seen a massive increase in "Barber shops" crop up in the last 5 years. They seem to disappear as quickly as they appear. This means to me that something has become appealing to getting a quick barber license and just winging it. There are good barbers, and good hair stylists. There are also bad ones. Look at the reviews of a person's skills. No need to do a lot of research and remember that everyone has a bad day. Treating customers like crap and retaliation on a repeat good customer is an obvious vote for marking a business to go into the "no" pile, especially when your personal safety is concerned.

I give him full license to interpret what I am asking, adapt it to my type of hair and face, and execute the cut. I don't look during the process. (I am a salesperson for technical products, so I know better than to pretend that I know better). Each time, Kory has made me feel like a better person. (More self-confident, better looking, smarter, taller, whiter teeth and fresher breath, etc.) Yesterday, I described a billboard that I saw in Paris 25 years ago for a Garnier hair product that showed a young man with longish hair whose chaos perfectly balanced style, precision, and dishevelment ( the Jackson Pollock of haircuts!) and was captioned, "Salut du Lit" ( which means bed head). Kory then referred me to a photo of Brad Pitt in Fight Club (in which he looks like he fell out of bed) that had somewhat shorter hair- which better translates to my face and workplace needs. The result: I am super, super happy with the cut. That said, I am sure that I will grow it out too long and go back to Kory in a few months and ask for something completely different (which I know that he will pull off to perfection! ). This guy is consistent, skilled & efficient. Extremely gregarious, he's always got a great story or two ready to go. You might have to wait for the guy in front of you, but the conversations you'll take part in before taking your seat on the throne will be well worth your time. He keeps a clean, sanitary shop, so you never have to feel like it's an unpleasant wait here. To be transparent, I'm cursed with fantastic, thick hair; in my 40s, people would give me so much crap about how great it looks - especially my buddies who started shaving their heads in their 20s. It would be a shame not to do something good with a head of hair like this, but it is a pain for any stylist to manage well. Scott has it down to perfection; everytime I go in, I get rave reviews for weeks afterwards! I've been hired at least twice in the past, solely because of a hairstyle that Scott gave me, so I see it as a return on investment! YMMV... This place is old school, so expect your typical barbershop experience - witty banter, waiting in line (because he really IS that awesome, and people come from miles around to stand in line down the street), and the rare occasion where the barber is out for the day. Nothing that can't be overcome for the best hairstyle this side of Boston!
