HOTWORX - Portland

HOTWORX - Portland

First, I was charged over $250 for what was supposed to be a "trial month," which felt extremely misleading. I canceled immediately after realizing how disappointing the experience was. The facility itself felt unsanitary and very poorly maintained. On top of that, the owner came across as extremely judgmental and unprofessional, which made the whole experience even worse. Also, calling this place a "gym" feels misleading. It's basically small sauna boxes where you try to exercise in extreme heat. Instead of feeling like a good workout, it felt uncomfortable and difficult to even breathe while trying to move. It's not motivating at all. The heat is so intense that it even fries your hair if you're not careful. Overall, I would not recommend this place to anyone looking for a real gym or a positive fitness environment.

The good: This is not what I expected, but was very happy with the set up. Access to the sauna alone is worth the membership. They also have a free weight area and a basic universal gym. The bad: it's not very clean. I go to the same sauna each time because of the class I take and I noticed that the glass door was dirty with fingerprints all around the handle and when I came back the next night it was exactly the same, which means they are not cleaning the space every night. I don't feel confident that the equipment is being cleaned, so recommend that you clean the equipment you want to use before you use it, not just after. You have to buy their yoga mat and towel as part of your membership and I already had two at home, so that didn't make me happy but it is what it is. Personally, going every day is causing dermatitis flare-ups, which I'm hoping will acclimate over time and settle down, but overall the benefits outweigh the deficits. I joined for treating OA hip and back pain and to regain mobility and it works VERY well.

For context, I've been in and out of CrossFit for the past 12 years, and was searching not only at CF boxes, but any sort of gym community to stay active during my month long stay. This gym and community became my home away from home, and honestly wish I had such a community back home. Coaches: To begin Matt, Chrissy and Claire are incredible coaches that not only are extreme athletes themselves, but are also the most patient and friendly instructors that one could wish for in any gym. Programming: Matt does an amazing job with the programming of classes - mixing in weight lifting and high-intensity cardio with scaled options available for any level of athlete to feel their best and leave the gym, glad they came! Community: What stands out to me the most about this gym is the community. From my very first day, the entire community embraced me with open arms. A very special shout out to Kelly, Diana, Faye, Grant, Jon (I know I'm missing so many others!) who really foster all the positivity that I've come to expect in a gym community. In my last 12 years, I've been across more than a dozen gyms and have also coached part-time at many - I can truly say that CrossFit SW is something special. Conclusion: My only regret is that due to a last minute change in work, I had to leave unexpectedly without a proper goodbye, but I know I'll be back here whenever I can! Whether you are a seasoned athlete looking for a new home, or have been on the cusp of getting started again with fitness, I can guarantee you are in the best hands here.

I had been searching for a box and the reviews and Groupon made this place too good to pass up. During my first class, I felt the same warmth that I did at my first CF gym and fell in love with CrossFit all over again. Laura and Melissa welcomed me in with open arms and challenged me, encouraging me to grow. I actually moved across the country and back and I go out of my way to come to this box. Since re-joining I have PR'd my front squat and clean and now I'm signing up for my first ever competition! If you are looking for killer workouts and a supportive community, consider coming to Crossfit SW Beaverton!

My reason for not signing my kids up, because $25/class is $100 a week for two kids a week. Which is $400/month. Which is a car payment. Nonetheless, my son's baseball schedule actually doesn't allow us to to any consistent training because the game days and times change each week. I really liked the LOW pressure approach to check it out for free and think about it. I never felt harassed or aggravated by "aggressive sales people." My daughter, who is extremely social and normally confident, was VERY nervous to be in the "check it out" session. They are both (my son and daughter,) "Rookie" aged and therefore did the same introductory class. Coach D was running the class. I was impressed because I had been training at a professional training facility with a trainer and Coach D was running the kids through what I had done doe warmups. He didn't let them give up and gently pushed. My daughter was feeling frustrated and told him that she felt like she wasn't doing as well as the other kids. And she felt weird as the only girl there. He told her that at D1, there are no girls or boy, just athletes. And she was doing better and picking it up quicker than most boys do. I had honestly not thought she would be interested in doing it at all, she just tagged along since we didn't have school and we're out running errands. But she was REALLY pumped up. She was stronger than age realized and really enjoyed it. She often feels super intimidated by new things but after completing it gets very excited. I love that she felt challenged, accepted and that she really wanted to go back. If we could get her alone there and make it worthwhile financially I think it would be so good for her. Maybe later. See y'all maybe this summer.

I've tried all sorts of group fitness classes, individual workout plans, etc. and, while fun, I struggled to be consistent and didn't feel like I was improving. Getting the courage to try out Tigard CrossFit was one of my best decisions. I was hesitant, as I have never tried CrossFit, but I quickly realized that the gym was welcoming to people of all abilities. The coaching staff is extremely knowledgeable and have a tremendous amount of options for those of us who need to scale, as we learn and ramp up. Most of all, I've noticed the coaching staff care deeply about the progression of each athlete. They spend time drilling movements and observe every class member to ensure they are lifting with proper technique. They walk around the class during the WOD - providing feedback at all times on technique, and to provide motivation when we need it. They will push you, but they will also encourage listening to your body and scale if needed. The gym, coaching staff, and fellow athletes are incredible, and have given me the motivation to get into the best shape of my life. I highly recommend CrossFit Tigard!
