They seem competent, but the owner, Eric Mauck, is, in my opinion, the kind of guy that will try to extract every last penny he can out of you. It is very unpleasant doing business with him. He tries to come across as a nice, open guy, but I'm pretty sure it's just an act, as you'll see below. They came up on a Saturday and did a very poor job of looking for the septic tank and didn't find it. They looked right where it was, but somehow couldn't find it. For coming up and not doing anything, they charged me $250, and he told me he was doing me a favor charging me so little. He said they would need to come back another day and that they would need to bring a mini-track hoe, which would cost $300, to "dig" to find the tank because the tank clearly didn't have a riser. He also wanted to stick me with a $300 plumber that who would bring a camera to put down the drain to find the tank. I got him to bring the plumber cost down to $200. He said I would need a riser because my tank obviously didn't have one, which would be $350. The pumping of the tank would be $400 and the maintenance of the pump would be $250.
They showed up the next day with the plumber. It took the plumber about 5 minutes to locate the tank, which was exactly where we all expected it to be. It took the track hoe about 5 minutes to uncover the riser of the tank, which Eric had insisted I did not have (and he had brought one to install). Since I clearly had one, which meant he couldn't sell me one for $350, he said that he would need to go and get a 6" riser to add to my riser so that it could be found more easily in the future. I told him no thanks because now I knew exactly where the tanks and the riser were. He still needed to make his quota of money off of me, so he said that I should replace the pump. Why? Because it was 20 years old. He said I could replace it now or during the next 12 months when it stopped working and it might cause an emergency when I might have people renting the house. OK, so if the pump has been good for 20 years, it MUST go out in the next 12 months? Excuse me? Anyhow, I did replace the pump because the other one was old. He still charged me the maintenance fee for "servicing the pump vault".
Here's the real kicker. He had quoted me $300 for the mini track hoe, remember? When he was giving me the final invoice to pay him, he said, "Since we hardly used the track hoe, I'll only charge you $300 for it." I replied, "you quoted me $300 originally", and he replied, "oh, then I already gave you the discount when I quoted you". It gets worse. I look at the bill and he actually charged me $350, so I said, "hey, you said it would only be $300". His reply: "well, I already gave you a discount on a bunch of other stuff, so let's leave it at $350". He refused to bring it down to $300 as agreed in the quote. I felt that he is such a weasel, and I don't have time to deal with weasels, that I paid him and got him off my property as soon as I could. This guy thinks that after screwing me with the $250 from the first day and then screwing me with the extra $50, all this on top of clearly trying to sell me as many things as possible, that I will call him every year going forward to do the maintenance on my pump (which doesn't really need to be done every year). So on top of being a weasel (in my opinion), he seems delusional in thinking that I would ever give him another penny of my money. I do not recommend him or his company at all. read more
