As a fish taco connoisseur, it was important that the food at my wedding was above and beyond. We hired Hector for our wedding after our complimentary tasting. The tasting itself was put together nicely in his shop and he did not skimp on anything. He even has biodegradable plate options, which appealed to my tree hugger side. Our guests raved!! My maid of honor, who does not eat seafood, had the fish tacos and loved them! My grandma now judges all tacos by Casanova and says..."These aren't like the ones at Priscilla's wedding...". She may never eat other tacos again. Some of our guests had up to 9 tacos, they couldn't stop coming up for more. He also catered to my celiac bridesmaid and nephew who are very sensitive to cross contamination. She felt at ease by speaking to Hector in advance and his dedication to the gluten free community shows. He was apt and willing to speak to any guest with questions. He has great celiac references through his previously catered events. Finally, I hate Cilantro with a fiery passion, every little leaf and stem is an insult to my taste buds. He made 2 versions of ceviche and corn (served as appetizers) with and without cilantro so I could eat it, but other did not "miss out" on the evil plant. That was quite a thoughtful touch. He even added more food/apps to our menu the week before the wedding. Very accomodating. His setup was a challenge due to the venue's restrictions, but he worked seamlessly with the wedding planner to find a good space and it was amazing. I had the pleasure of being a judge at the Fish Taco TKO contest amongst eight local chefs that wanted reigns to having the best fish taco in San Diego. This took place at the Gourmet Experience on October 9th at the Del Mar Fairgrounds and lucky ol' me got to sample, savor & drool over eight fish tacos. Hector Casanova was one of the participants that whipped up a fish taco that stood out from the others. When I heard the name Casanova, I couldn't help but giggle because it reminded me of the time I took a touristy gondola ride in Venice, Italy four years ago and learned of the original Casanova being a ladies man (to say the least) who had a humble abode right along the Grand Canal. Made me wonder if this was his real name, he verified it surely is, but he's far from being known as the other Casanova I learned about, lol! Unfortunately, Casanova didn't win since the other nine judges voted on another taco in this tough competition. In my book, he should have took home the bling medal for being one of the best I've tried. What's his secret? He marinated his fish before he threw it on the grill. On top of that, the plating of his heavenly goodness that was accompanied with some rightfully salted, crispy tortilla chips won my vote. Thank goodness he's at the local Farmers Market throughout town. Since he doesn't have a shop for me to go to often, I'll just have to visit him at whichever FM he's serving up his tacos at. I've eaten fish tacos all over San Diego, California, the US, and the world (it's one of my baseline "I will try it anywhere to judge the local cuisine" staple items), and Casanova's are the best I've ever had. I feel 100% confident in that statement, as no other fish taco has left a resounding memory for me the way these do. His knack for showing up at breweries is an added bonus, and although it may not be a roaming truck, per se, it's a mobile operation which he manages to pull off with relative ease. The difference, he told me, is in the type of fish. They use angelfish as the base for the fish taco, something I've never seen or heard of anywhere else using, and it makes such a marvelous difference. The sauce to fish to slaw ratio is just perfect, and the size is plentiful even for the $9 price. I've also tried the shrimp tacos, which are very good too, but trust me just stick with the fish and you'll be delighted. Yelp puts it perfectly - "Meh" was my reaction after I was done with the fish taco. Let's skip all the service, pricing, etc. and go straight to the food, the taco as a whole, not just the fish itself. First, the tortilla. My taco was soggy. It wasn't because it had been sitting there for long. I ate it right away after the tray was in my hand. I don't know if it was the sauce that was too watery or the water coming out from the veggies? But how was it possible to have water coming out from cabbage? The tortilla also wasn't warmed up enough and did not taste fresh. Second, the sauce. I put the pico de gallo and salsa verde on the taco, which already came with some white sauce. Their pico de gallo was, well, the standard salsa that tasted pretty much the same everywhere unless a restaurant really screwed it up. The salsa verde was spicy, and then? Their white sauce wasn't creamy at all. There are really many other local taco shops that make better sauces than they do. Third, and most important of all, the fish. It was deep fried. How could that taste bad, right? No it didn't taste bad, it just didn't taste good. The deep fry was overdone, it was too brown. The fish also didn't come out crispy. And I don't know if it's the batter or the fish, when I was chewing it I could feel something coating my mouth and my tongue. Was it the marinade? Or some tenderizer they used? The fish did have some fish taste and that was just about right for tacos. It was seasoned properly too. It's just that weird feeling of having something coating my tongue which was slightly unpleasant. I really can't say for sure whether it's the fish or the batter. If you enjoy fish tacos that taste much better than the one you get here, try Roberto's Mexican at Solana Beach. THAT one is the fish taco that I would crave for and wouldn't mind driving a few more miles for. They didn't make a big deal out of their fish tacos, but sometimes it's a modest place like this that would give you nice surprises. Also, of course you can't forget the Marisco's German Taco Truck! One of the best places in SD for fish, shrimp, carne tacos! They both have better prices than Casanova. And I must say the best fish tacos that I've had are in Ensenada. If you ever go on a Carnival Cruise that stops there, get one, no, get at least 3 of them and 4 more to eat on the ship! read more

A lot of people have talked up Casanova, and Casanova did not disappoint. The staff was extremely friendly, and enthusiastic about their food. The prices were fair - it was $9.50 for two tacos of your choice, and a side chips. I had their Baja Style taco, and one of their new Grilled Sweet Ginger tacos. The Baja Style was solid, with light breading that didn't mask the great flavor of the angelfish beneath. I really loved the Grilled Sweet Ginger. As someone who appreciates some spice with their tacos, the serrano cream was an excellent addition to this taco, and blended well with the ginger and teriyaki.
