The 15th-century building is gorgeous, with all its grounds and visible vineyards. The collection of vintage tiles (Azeitao) throughout the house are beautiful, all very different in motifs and colorations. It is a true treasure. The most interesting part of the tour was also visiting the Bacalhoa vineyard's winery, which holds an enormous amount of aging barrels of Mescal, several ancient olive trees from 300 BC, and the owner's private art exhibition of three leading German turn of the 19th-century artists: Kahn, Hersch, and Lowen. The guided tour was well done, as was the three-wine tasting afterward. When we returned to Lisbon, the driver took us to see the huge (100 meter high) Cristo Rei statue overlooking the new bridge, Tejo River, and bay.

I came back here at least 2-3 times because it was a unique and interesting experience. The ginjinha is sweet and syrupy, but not too sweet like other places I've tried. It's also right next door to my favorite pastel de nata store, Nata Portuguesa, so I could get both fixes in one trip. Most people recommend the ginjinha with the cherry but I prefer it without. The drink is filled to the brim and I have shaky hands so it would get sticky and messy sometimes. But the store is prepared and has a little sink inside on the right to rinse off.

When Jamie W and I inadvertently walked by recently on our first evening in Lisbon, I realized we needed to stop and do the same thing. I had next to no memory of it, just that it didn't kill me. Jamie was rather hesitant, but I just showed my typical insolence and walked up to the proprietor behind the counter. He was already in mid-pour, and I actually remembered to say "com elas" to indicate we wanted cherries in our drinks. They were only 1,50€ per cup (Photo 8). We sipped them in seconds. The puckery flavor led to a nice finish. We were on our way in less than five minutes.
