Bread, cookies, and pastries are all showcased and it smells great. If you go during the afternoon during the week it won't be as crowded as it can get on the weekend. Everything here is terrific. Whenever I'm in the area I'll bring home a pound of assorted Italian cookies, I'll also grab rainbow cookies and cannolis. Their cannolis are terrific, some of the best in NY. Yes, NY, not just NYC. I think what makes their cannoli stand out amongst some of the best is their shell. It's always fresh and crispy. Their filling is a little more vanilla forward compared to other NY institutions version of the cannoli, so keep that in mind when trying one. I'll put it to you this way, if you like Italian pastries, especially cannolis make this place a destination to visit, give them a try and see how it ranks up compared to your favorites. And while you're there, take in the rest of Arthur Ave! Oh, I almost forgot. They have what my husband says are the best savoiardi cookies in the state. The best treat and time for Mommy daughter and the friendly hometown Italian shop. This was also a time when women had just been given power to make choices about financial means in the household and have bank accounts in their names. So my husband made the journey across town and brought home a few treats from Happy Cake, including a chocolate coffee dessert shaped like a Starbucks cup with a chocolate lid. When my daughter popped the chocolate lid off to eat it, we found mold growing inside the dessert. This is absolutely unacceptable for any food business -- I don't care if it's "my people" or not. For context, we bought the dessert on Sunday and discovered the mold on Monday. Fresh, properly stored desserts do not grow visible mold overnight. That means this item was already old, improperly stored, or handled without proper food safety standards. None of those possibilities are okay, especially when the dessert was meant for a child. We didn't bother driving all the way back to the store -- it's too far -- but we threw out that dessert and every other treat we bought immediately. I'm just grateful my daughter didn't take a bite first. I cannot trust the freshness or safety of their products and will not be buying anything from Happy Cake again. And if anyone thinks I'm exaggerating, I'm posting a photo so you can see exactly what we found.
