It got busy in a hurry.

I'm a bit confused. I know the last review is over 9 months old so I suspect there has been a change at the Cafe Peru. We had lunch yesterday and there was nothing on the menu that made us believe we were in a Peruvian restaurant. Maybe the Peruvian food come out at night, but the choices we were offered were solidly Dutch Lunch staples that we would expect in most places in town. If they did change management or menu then that would explain the dearth in recent reviews....other than that I don't have a clue. However: This is a solid lunch place and we were pleasantly surprised as we were not quite out of the tourist district and were expecting less than what we received. What we received was a very good lunch that satisfied the four of us with everything we ate. We ordered the: Pumpkin Soup (creamy and sumptuous) Chicken Soup (perfect for the cold windy day) Oude Kaas with mustard (to satisfy our Dutch craving) Hamburger (the Dutch tend to cook it rare but, when in Holland....) We liked our meals and thought the prices were reasonable. We will be back.

Decent Peruvian restaurant, they offer a large selection of dishes with attractive description. It was hard to choose what to order :) I wanted to start the dinner with a ceviche of course, it was at 16.5 euros, which is expensive I think. Anyway, let's see if the Sea bass in "Tiger milk"is as fresh as specified in the menu. The portion is one person sized, full of onion, difficult to share. The taste is here, amertume, freshness, but I expected more sweet potato and corn. As a main dish I got the slices of Lamb, again full of onion, meat was nicely cooked. Not a plate I would remember forever. The presentation is not appealing but the taste were there and I was almost full I could not finish. I kept some space for the dessert anyway. I was surprised about the prices (8.5 euros). But again, the description of dessert promised a good experience. I tried the traditional Tres Leches cake. Surely the best part of my meal! Service was nice but not as fast as you expect. Smiling and polite, it is a great place and I loved the setting. Prices tends to be high, but if you can allow between 40/50 euros for the dinner, it is a place you should consider when in Amsterdam.

This tiny portion size is 19.50!

We came here for our NYE dinner with a friend from Peru who really wanted a taste of home in Amsterdam and as big fans of ceviche and mariscas- this was no problem for us. I never write reviews but I'm so disappointed with the food and service that I feel the duty to warn other potential patrons NOT to come to this sorry excuse for a restaurant. To begin, the prices on the menu are absolutely outrageous- even for Amsterdam standards. I believe the cheapest entree was 17.50. This in itself would be okay if the value matched the price. However not only were the prices high, but the portions were McDonald's Happy Meal Sized. It is completely cheap and unethical to charge upwards of 20 euros per Entree and then deliver tiny portion sizes (see picture). Furthermore, not only were the prices unreasonable, but the food was overly salted and drenched in sauce. The meat used in the Lomo Saltado resembled microwave meat from Aldi and was completely tasteless. Moreover, they did not even have two basic Peruvian drinks: Inca Cola and Chicha Morada! In addition, the waiter was completely inattentive and brought our meal out (for four people) separately. All in all, don't waste your time and money here. I completely understand that restaurants up-charge to survive but this is downright cheating people out of their money.

For mains we had chaufa de mariscos (seafood risotto) and lomo saltado (strips of beef fillet fried with vegetables) - all extremely yummy, my only comment being that I could have done without so many French fries with the lomo, very tasty though they were. For dessert we shared a maracuya (passion fruit) cheesecake with mango sorbet (see other photo) which was superb. We had some Peruvian beer with the food, which was an inspired choice as it went very well with it. Wine was available in half bottles, but not a great selection and I suspect it would have been a bit of a disappointment. Service was excellent and friendly. Ambience was good: it's a smallish place which was full most of them time we were there, so it's a good idea to book. Many of the other diners appeared to be Peruvians or Spaniards which must surely be a good sign of being popular with people who know about Peruvian food. Cost was 75 Euros for 2 which is perhaps a little pricey but in our opinion the delicious, imaginative and very high quality food was well worth it. Overall it was an excellent dining experience and I can't recommend it too highly as a very enjoyable place to eat.

The Piscos seemed to be the order of the day because every table had one so we decided to order two to start our evening. They were perfectly balanced and dangerously smooth. Throughout the culinary experience, each dish tells a story presented in the most artistic way with bold flavors. Honestly mind-blowing. I only have one small criticism. When we arrived at the restaurant we were seated and ignored for a good 15-20min. I must admit that the place was completely full and the staff seemed to be rushing from one side to the other from table to table. I certainly wasn't disappointed. On arrival I was given the choice of sitting outside to enjoy the last of the evening sun or inside on one of many tables well spaced apart but all with views into the open kitchen and the inviting bar. I was presented with 3 menus. Food, wine and cocktails. I decided to go with a combination of the recommendations made and my personal tastes. The food menu covers 4 optional courses and priced consistent with any major city. The sourced ingredients I would discover later made all the difference to the flavours and I was grateful for the choice of quality over value which so often takes the edge of many great dishes. Having spent the day running the Rotterdam Marathon and several weeks of training restricting both what I eat and drank, this meal would be an opportunity to get some calories and pleasure back into me. I wasn't going to restrict myself. I ordered 2 cocktails to contrast the spectrum of traditional Peruvian cocktails. Starting with a Pisco Sour followed by a Chilcano. The Pisco Sour was an instant hit. The zest and flavours of the limes mixed with the sweet sugar syrup, bitters and egg white served as an excellent palate cleanser and set me in the mood for a great meal. I do not tend to enjoy cocktails usually finding them too sweet. But the Pisco Sour I think may now be my drink of choice. To Start I ordered Civiche Mixto. This consisted of prawn, octopus and kingfish served with sweet potato purée, corn, avacado and red onion. Flakes of sea salt had been added to the Avacado which helped bring out the flavour and juices. the sweet potato purée was a revelation with the fish, raising it to a whole new level. I them choose a lamb dish Seco de Corderito a la Nortena. This was beautifully presented. The intense sauce was fantastic full of flavours and heat which hit your tongue, but did not overpower the flavours. The lamb was cooked to perfection. Flaking away and melting in the mouth, yes still with the pinkness require to deliver the flavour. This was all served with a Peruvian White Chardonnay. Bursting with flavours of bananna and much drier than the buttery Australian versions we have become accustomed. Absolutely outstanding. I shall be back despite it being in a different country.
