Very disappointed by this visit. Came on a vibrant Friday night around 9pm with my wife for a drink and some bites. Hostess told us there was a wait but we could sit in a side area to have a drink and wait. Wouldn't tell us how long but said it wouldn't be much since we were open to any seating, even the bar, as long as it was in the main dining room. What we didn't know was it seemed her plan was for us to stay in this little side room since things were busy. A server came over and we explained we did only wanted a drink while we waited for our table. She seemed confused and got us the drinks. We checked in with the hostess after 15 mins. Nothing yet. Can't give me an estimate. Another 15 mins. Still nothing. Our server was annoyed we were not ordering food. We explained again that we wanted to be in the main area and not a table literally facing the bathrooms. Not sure why that was confusing for her. We weren't being disrespectful or difficult. After 45 mins of waiting, sipping on very watered down drinks, and being lied to, we left. I had high hopes and had been planning on visiting for some time now. I won't be back. Wow! Casa Hernan was not what I was expecting, but in a great way. I visited Casa Hernan for their Mexico's Independence Day celebration and it was such a fun time. I thought Casa Hernan was a restaurant, but I would consider them more of a bar/cantina type of place. The decoration of the place is absolutely beautiful and I must say they have the comfiest chairs that make you want to stay there all nice. For my first time I decided to try their Corazon de melon cocktail, which has vodka, watermelon, cucumber and mint, topped with a watermelon spicy paleta. The drink was refreshing and unique, and tasted so good. For food, we ordered the queso fundido and some chips and salsa with guacamole. Beautiful bar in a house down southtown by La Tuna. They do have a dedicated parking lot with plenty of parking spots, you just have to pull around the building to see it. It is very well decorated and furnished with Mexican/Spanish influence. There was a DJ when I went and music videos playing on the TVs. A lot more lively than I expected but there was also a big group event going on. I ordered the Corazon de melon - vodka, watermelon, cucumber, mint cocktail and tried the chicken flautas and volcanes de asada (tostadas.) Our server raved about the volcanes and she was right they were a 10/10, the steak and salsa on there is awesome. Located right next to La Tuna.. this spot has lots of character. The decor as you walk in is definitely eye catching, I loved all the calaveras (skulls) as it seemed very Dia De Los Muertos. Dropped by here on a whim, and it was a great experience overall! There were plenty of parking spots open in the lot, but I can imagine this place getting more popular and crowded by word of mouth. The exterior is an unassuming darkly lit house with a huge "casa hernan" sign at the front. The entrance of the bar is actually on the side of the house, facing the parking lot. But when you walk inside, you're transported to a fun, music-filled lounge/bar area. (Granted, it was a Saturday night, so I'm not sure how it is on the weekdays.) Seating was "seat yourself," and there were a handful of cozy spots/tables to choose from. The menu is simple but sufficient--one side has drinks, while the other side has food. I tried the Que Fresa Frozen, Paloma de Oro, and Cantina Margarita, and they were all delicious! Food-wise, we got El Botanero and Quesadillas. The portion size of the chips and salsas (el botanero) was huge! The food was perfect to munch on to accompany the drinks. Second round of drinks took a little bit to come out, but service overall was great! Our server was super nice, warm, and friendly! I definitely recommend coming here on a night out. It's very lively but not too crowded. I went this past weekend and was sad there wasn't menudo. The guy said they change menus every few months. Also, be prepared to eat at coffee tables. Most of these tables are coffee tables of all sizes and shapes. Cool decor, but it was so odd to me. Thankfully, we sat at a table, but we could have left without paying for as little attention as they paid to us. We had to ask for our check a few times, and someone had to find out who had our table. And flag them down. I gave an extra star bc she admitted ,que no les atendí bien" and only charged us for one adult buffet instead of 2. The food? Was great. Chilaquiles Verdes were delicious. The chicken from the grill outside was amazing. However, at a buffet, you expect all the food together in a row. But this was spread out to 2 rooms and outside at the grill. So 3 places total. And there was never anyone that explained that to us. We just roamed around, and I asked other patrons that we saw walking with food. Like, hey girl, where did u get the beans from? Outside at the grill was pork, sausage, and chicken. My friend got all 3. But when I went they only gave me chicken. I had asked what they had, and nobody really answered that question. Do I serve myself? Do I wait for you? It was so disorganized, I don't believe I would come back, to be quite honest. Parking is an issue. We visited Casa Hernán on Sunday for brunch, and the experience was overall a blast. The food was really good. the fresh corn tortillas, chilaquiles, and guacamole were the best. The menudo was also on point. For dessert, the churros were a standout, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and full of flavor. The atmosphere is what really makes this place special. The decor has a chic, Mexico City/Frida Kahlo vibe that makes you feel like you're somewhere truly unique. The DJ was spinning great music. All ages were dining. The bar looked amazing but we did not drink. As for service, our waiter was very friendly, but a bit inattentive. It was buffet-style, so that wasn't a huge issue, but worth noting. One big and dissapointing surprise came at the end when we saw the tip options. Despite being a buffet, the lowest tip option was 20%, with higher levels from there. That was a bit shocking, especially since it wasn't full table service. For a fairly expensive (but not brazillian steakhouse level) buffet, I did not expect that. There were only five hot food items, which were all really good, then some mixed fruit and a few choices of pan dulce. Soft drinks, juices, and coffee were included with all alcohol separate. The coffee was amazing. The whole thing really wasn't bad for the price, but wish there had been more selections like menudo or barbacoa. It was pretty lively, but not crowded. They have a good ass margarita. Margs are slightly pricy, but they're done right. We sat at the bar which is really cool. The decor they have around the place is fun. They have tvs with music videos and had a DJ setting up when we got there. It was a little loud, but not so loud that you couldn't carry on a conversation. There's tons of seating with tables, chairs, sofas. The bartenders and drinks were good, but was waiting over an hour on a 30 minute wait while seeing people who came after me get sat with no reservation. When I did sit down my table hadn't been cleaned off yet, and was waiting for a server for 10 minutes and still no one (remind you I see them cleaning other tables for people who haven't sat down). I had to get up to get a server, and then when someone tried to rectify the situation and get us a new table we then went to the buffet when there was no food or was scraps of food that has been sitting.
