This place should be a national treasure. Food and service were great, large portions and priced reasonably. It's just not an easy place to find even with GPS. The name is on the building but there's a narrow doorway to enter that's relatively inconspicuous. Then Up a few flight of stairs to the tavarino but don't stop there. Keep going up to an amazing moorish restaurant with tiled walls and patterned floors. You will wander through the building in amazement, it's like strolling through a Moroccan villa. read more

We were very interested in this place because we heard about a beautiful setting, a cool location, and also, we had recently been on a hiking trip through the Alentejo the region on which this place's cuisine is based. The setting is fabulous. There are incredibly beautifully painted tiles that depict the Alentejo countryside, and really interesting idyllic farming scenes. We went here on a Friday night and the ambience was incredible. We thought we were really in for a hidden treat. The service was super attentive! Servers were awesome! They made sure my gluten issue was addressed! The place was packed to the gills but they still found a table for us! We got a really incredible wine recommendation, and we had a starter of goat cheese, walnuts, and honey that was truly memorable. But unfortunately, things went downhill after that. Both our mains were just very poor. I got a lamb stew, and my girlfriend got grilled sea bream. The stew was unfortunately "throwaway" pieces of lamb, with lots of gristle and fat. The sea bream was just OK but not particularly fresh or tasty. The vegetables that came with both dishes felt like they came from cans and had been reheated at least 1-2x. Remember, we have eaten in multiple small villages before coming back to Lisbon, and have had meals like this in far less expensive settings, in far more modest places - and those places were awesome. They were delicious, memorable, and they made me want to finish my entire plate at the expense of my waistline. Here, I couldn't (and wouldn't, sadly) finish my meal and it's a real shame, as this setting and service had such great potential. read more

This place must have been or is an old social club. Before you get to the restaurant part of the building 3 walking flights up, you come in to a courtyard with social sitting spaces on all sides with placks of people who are no longer with us, a fountain and some trees. Then you follow the sign up another flight of stairs to the actually resturant. The staff again reminds of club staff, who are usually salaried & doesn't work for tips, are strait foreword, honest about the food & not very particular (I like this). I had the bread soup and pork & clams both were new to me. Aside from being kinda strong tasting (Cantonese like tastes less concentrated) the dishes where fascinating in a good way. I've had clams at the Military Club in Macau (amazing) before and was not taken aback with clams with pork. These clams where small & the pork was cured so salty. This is a traditional Portuguese dish and save for a he saltiness, it was great. The bread soup was interesting in that it was brothy, oily and full of garlic at the same time with a poached egg in it and chunks of bread. Back off the garlic & oil a bit and I would have loved it... I finished it nevertheless. When we left, all 3 rooms of the restaurant was filled and mostly by locals (not tourist) having a good time. The rooms/building were stately at one point but still has some charm under the scruffiness. If you are traveling through Lisbon, come try this place... Far better than the myriad of tourist traps just outside. read more

Based on the recommendation of our superb car pool driver, we arrived at this restaurant. he waiter recommended us to try the fried pork with clams & the stewed lamb, and as water is just a bit cheaper than wine, we also got a small bottle of red wine. The Pork came with fried potato or what we may call "home fries" and a pile of clams. The pork was very succulent and cooked just right and paired with the clams and fries added up to a great bite (especially with the wine to wash it down). The star for me was the lamb. Its times like these I like to say, whats the knife for? To defend myself from people who try to steal my food? Because i definitely don't need it to cut this lamb. Not only was the lamb tender, it was seasoned not with anything fancy except for good olive oil, salt and some herbs which really allowed the lamb itself to shine through with its flavor. A little bit of wine, a little bit of lamb, and some break apart potatoes, and it equals a great meal. In addition to the meal itself, the venue itself had parts which seem to come straight from a museum, so definitely check this place out. read more

This restaurant was in general a very good experience. Service was good, not great, sometimes we found Portuguese waiters to be a bit rude but I think it probably only was a matter of the language barrier and/or maybe, some cultural differences. In this restaurant the best we had was probably my dish, the fried cod "bacalhau frito con migas" served with chickpeas purée. Everyone at the table agreed on this but they liked theirs except my younger daughter's dish was a fiasco. The name is hard to remember, something sounded like "pica pau" Porco Preto - Black Pork. The two rice dishes were delicious, the Tamboril one is a fish named like that and it usually doesn't have any other seafood but this came with "gambones" similar to regular shrimp but big and better. The "arroz de borrego con cogumelos", goat rice which had mushrooms was gamier but delicious also. We chose the cheapest wine on the menu because it happened to be an Albariño and it was a win. read more

Upon the recommendation of our bike guide, we ate at Casa do Alentejo for lunch on New Year's Eve. This turned out to be a great recommendation from a local once you enter the Casa do Alentejo from the street, you ascend a grand flight of stairs and enter a Moroccan courtyard. Stop for a picture there before you proceed to the second floor you'll find a grand library and ballroom, both of which were closed but could be viewed through a roped-off area. There are two connected dining rooms there where we flagged down a server to get a table. We ordered the vegetable soup, mixed salad, roasted salmon with potatoes and lamb chops with fries and sautéed spinach. We also enjoyed a bottle of house red wine, Portuguese draft beer and sparkling water. Lunch was finished with a chocolate mouse and pudding. All of this was tasty, well prepared and served in an historic, grand setting, for approximately 75E. Definitely worth a visit if you are looking for a relaxing lunch that provides good value in s memorable setting. read more

My sister and I wanted a real portuguese experience for our first night and we found this restaurant on Yelp. The restaurant itself is really amazing. The house is a little bit hard to find and from the outside it looks sort of rundown but the ambiance inside is great. There are two different rooms for seating decorated with the typical tiles. But now about the food: we ordered the pork with clams and potatoes (which was obviously one of their favorites because every second table ordered it) and one traditional dish but we don't remember the name. The plates looked good and were decorated but we absolutely didn't like the food. The potatoes were only half cooked and the meat wasn't good either. Maybe we just caught a bad night there. read more

I went to this restaurant with a large group so we had a fixed menu. It started with the prerequisite Portuguese olives and cheese which are always good. It was followed by a vegetable soup, which I enjoyed but others said tasted burnt. Then we had a fish course, which was cod. It was a bit dry but the accompanying potatoes were very good. Next was a lamb and potatoes dish which was excellent. Everyone loved the lamb. Lastly, we had an assortment of desserts and port, a nice way to end the meal. The building had an interesting history making it a unique dining experience in Lisbon. The wait staff was also very friendly. read more

Amazing building (moorish style). I would suggest it to everyone visiting Lisbon and especially for those interested in cultural/ traditional atmosphere. The building looks like a very old Moorish style with different rooms overlooking a big yard covered in tiles and engraved wood, each room has different style and beautiful ceilings. I tried their dinner and I didn't like it at all, extremely salty, fish was overcooked, salad had no seasoning and the whole menu was not interesting ( fish/ meat with roasted veg). However, maybe it would be a great spot for a drink or afternoon tea or something. It's an incredible spot and not to be missed. read more

How cool that this restaurant is on restaurant row but you almost have to do a double take to find it. It's an old Moorish castle and the interior is an unbelieveable display of tile work, a garden and various paintings on the walls. You climb two flights to get to the main restaurant. The food is simple, traditional Portuguese fare. We started with a melon and ham salad, which was just right. Then the famous peasant soup, acorca (sorry if i didnt use the right spelling), the bread soup in water, olive oil, garlic and herbs. This restaurant added an egg, but it was so hard boiled it was tough. Perhaps a soft boiled egg instead? We followed with the salmon with mashed potatoes and vegetables, and the pork with clams. The salmon was average, but the pork was flavored with typical tasty Portuguese spices. The pork melted in your mouth, and the clams were sweet. Dessert was the platter of assorted cakes, all good. Come here for the ambience, the tradition, and the price is good too. read more

Our hostel recommended coming here for traditional Portuguese meal, but we were pretty disappointed. It's located in a beautiful space with tiled mosaics covering the walls, but the food was extremely disappointing. I got the pork with mussels and potatoes, and it was too salty and too greasy. The pork was really tough, dry, and stringy. The fries were probably the best part of the meal. Portions are huge, but doesn't make up for the quality of the food. Service though was very patient and let us sit and eat for a long time. read more

Big palace with Moorish architecture, many rooms, you will probably get lost, beautiful details + chandeliers, you will be amazed for sure. Now, concerning the food, my plate was delicious, it's portuguese food, so it's very traditional, ceviches, fish, potatoes, lambs, red wine and so on... Very cheap & affordable menu. The waiter was friendly and service was good. People complaining about the food here don't understand the portuguese food at all, it's very rustic & basic, it's not fancy french food, otherwise, go to Paris. This place was recommended to me from a friend from Lisbon who said its the place to go for the southern Portuguese cuisine. The setting was such a surprise as the place has a regular store front and then you walk into what seems like a small palace with beautiful woodwork and windows. The restaurant inside was actually huge and we enjoyed our meal and service. The seafood is the choice in Lisbon as its so fresh. I think I prefer the northern cuisine to southern but I enjoyed tasting it all. read more

This is a historic building, where locals barely know what is going on - and that is the funky part of it. At night, a vibrant and young crowd come to savor local favorites. Chourico, tapas... cheeses and wine or beer or drinks. The food is ok, but the vibe is amazing - a wonderful, loud and energetic place to hang before you say adios to Lisbon. It is huge and maze-like with private party rooms, a large sit in restaurant and a couple of small bars. Very cool! read more

We were tired from our flight and wanted something simple. There is a formal restaurant if you go upstairs, but we stopped in the bar/taverna area. We ate outside and went it to order at the counter (this is faster than waiting for a waiter). Wine inexpensive, gazpacho was delicious - very different from what we had in Spain. Sausage, bread and olives - a great start to our Lisbon adventure. You must walk upstairs to get to this bar and then up another set of stairs to the formal restaurant. read more

I arrived 9:40ish, even though google map said it closed at 11, I was told the kitchen has closed and they close at 10, so I only had two dishes to choose from, rock fish or pork. Went here based on past reviews and was not disappointed. The location CAN be difficult to find especially if you're drawn to the tons of other restaurants in the area, but found it anyway without too much trouble. Once inside, you have to head up some stairs and follow the signs until you see the tables set up towards the back. The building was cool if you like rustic, but can definitely use a little updating. Even still, the place has some very interesting decor and was a cool place to eat. Was seated and promptly waited on...The service was good and our waiter spoke good English. I had an appetizer- assorted meats, some wine (awesome!) and the pork tenderloin. It was all VERY tasty so we stayed for dessert and had the chocolate mousse, also excellent. This place came highly recommended, however it was such a disappointment. If you like greasy salty food, with rude waiter then come and enjoy. The waiter was rude, did not stop for a second to acknowledge our desire to discuss food and give recommendations on the wine. He did not stop to answer a question on the order.
