Casa del Barco is a chain Mexican restaurant and this location is in Richmond, near the Short Pump mall. There's plenty of free parking in the lot in front of the restaurant and near the mall as well. This location has 2 floors with high top tables, tables indoors, and patio seating. We went on mother's day and were seated immediately upstairs. Something about the restaurant is that the kitchen is downstairs so if you're upstairs, service is a bit slower. I wouldn't recommend sitting upstairs if you're with a large group. Additionally, our server upstairs was a little forgetful even though the restaurant was pretty empty. We asked for utensils, extra plates, and napkins 3x after our food already came to our table, extra chips a few times, and soda refills 2x as well before she remembered to do it since she wasn't writing things down. However, the food definitely made up for the service. Something to note is that chips and salsa do not come complimentary here, but are $4 with unlimited refills. The salsa was delicious and the perfect amount of spicy, would definitely recommend. The esquites were crunchy, smoky, and flavorful. The tinga taco chicken was seasoned and cooked well, the fillings (salsa/salad/sauce) paired well with the chicken, and the size of the tortillas were perfect. The fajitas were also seasoned nicely and warm. Additionally, the tres leches had coconut and strawberries, which was unique, but the cake overall was moist and a good portion. Unfortunately, the margarita flight used that lower quality, lime juice, or at the very least it wasn't properly done that being said the ambience was good. I can't speak to the food as we just stopped in for one quick drink before dinner reservations, but our bartender was amazing. She was holding down that bar and running circles around the other three "bartenders" there. She was incredibly kind and truly doing twice if not 3 times the work of the other two girls and one guy. Girls night out at these delicious spot in Short Pump mall. Plenty of parking at the mall, diff brat the dinner rush. Sat at the bar until one of my girls showed up and we got to enjoy a HH drink. Then when the final guest party showed up we got to grab a seat pretty instantly. It was a great fun time and our server was great. I decided on their Birria de Res Tacos. The décor immediately stood out -- especially the entryway and bar area, with its ceiling lined with tequila bottles that's truly a sight to see. We stopped in on a mid afternoon at the Short Pump location. We got two appetizers and some drinks. This is located as a stand alone store at the mall so parking is very easy. The restaurant has an upper and lower level. We were upstairs. Our service was good and everything we ate and drink were quite good. For starters, this has good things and also not so good. Five of us came today to celebrate my granddaughters birthday. Since it was Sunday, there was a brunch menu in addition to the regular menu. A couple of us gravitated to the Mimosas on the brunch menu as it indicated they came in carafe size. I asked our waitress how many glasses that was in the carafe and she said it was over 2. Great! Two of us ordered that and a couple others ordered margaritas. The waitress came back and said they don't do the carafes now. Ok. I get it but we still ordered them. My sister in law ordered a breakfast burrito- which looked very good and was equally tasty. It was huge in size and could easily be split. Granddaughter had the chicken quesadilla off the kid menu as it didn't have the onions and peppers like the regular one. It was so big she brought half with her. The chicken inside it was chunk grilled chicken which was tasty though several pieces were overcooked. My daughter had the empanadas and they were delicious! My sister had the the chicken quesadillas which were somewhat spicy. I had the crunchy shrimp taco and they were anything but crunchy. The flavors were good but it was definitely messy to eat. I had a side of rice and beans: Spanish rice on one side of a small bowl and black beans that seemed to come right out of a can. The wait staff were attentive and it was a nice place to escape the rain and snow. The kicker came when we received our bills. My sister in law and I both ordered the mimosas which were served in a glass, smaller than a wine glass and kind of like a small water glass/goblet with a short stem. It was not even halfway full and was definitely more orange juice than mimosa. I should have made a comment when we got them but didn't want to be "that customer". BUT when the bill came and we were charged the $14 that was on the menu for the mimosa carafe, I then asked about this. I was told this was the price - even after I commented that it was such a small amount. You'd be lucky if this was in total 2 ounces!! In any event the waitress didn't offer anything but that that was the price even though i indicated it wasn't what was advertised which is really ridiculous. I honestly thought it would have been $7. I showed up an hour and a half before closing, i seemed to be a bother to the server. And trust me, he made it known. He was very eager to rush me through my experience. I worked in the restaurant industry so I can understand the frustration. however, that seems to be an inside problem versus mine. Yet i paid for it. my food came out less than 10 minutes after I ordered. HORRIBLE quality. i guess the annoyance was both front of house and back of house. We stopped in around 3 pm for a late lunch. The restaurant was pretty empty, but we were told there would be a 10 minute wait. Strange, but I figured a lot of the staff was off (it was the day after Christmas)? Once we were seated, we waited and waited and waited; no one brought us water, greeted us, or even acknowledged that we were there. A server finally approached a table near us; they had been sitting there since before we arrived. The server took their order and I figured she would take ours next, but nope, she walked right past us. We were starving so decided to wait a few more minutes, but no one ever acknowledged us, so we decided to leave. I was going to let the staff at the door know that we were leaving, but three staff people were standing at the station talking to each other and laughing, and never even looked in our direction, so we just walked out. After a hours of shopping at Short Pump, Casa del Barco provided a festive yet relaxing break with a tasty margarita and creative tacos. The dining room occupies an open two-story space decorated with painted tequila bottles, two-story hanging lights, and a mix of table types, from cozy tables for two to larger groups. The menu offers many options of Mexican meals. While we ordered the fish tacos and the beef brisket tacos, trays filled with loudly sizzling and deliciously smelling fajitas passed our table. While the fajitas tempted us, we were set on tacos. They offer platters with either two or three tacos that come with a cup of rice and black beans. You also can order a la carte tacos if you wish to try different proteins. The Baja fish tacos came beer battered with cheese, cabbage, and pico de gallo in a soft shell. They were light and refreshing. The beef brisket tacos were fried and came with a dipping sauce. It was like a version of a French dip. The side of rice and black beans topped with cheese was a nice accompaniment. I had asked if I could replace the beans with the plantains on the menu, but that wasn't possible. I could order the plantains as a side dish or make an a la carte lunch choosing tacos and plantains. The house margarita was just the way I like it: simple without any agave or sweet and sour mix added. If you prefer a sweeter margarita, you can ask to have those added, as well as other additions. Our server was knowledgeable and efficient. We especially liked how they brought the credit card machine to the table after the meal--something other counties have been doing for a long time. It speeds up the check out process, and your credit card never leads your sight. Well fed and recharged, we had a great experience at Casa del Barco, and we'll likely return. read more

Best. Queso. Ever. It hit me with a short, satisfactory burst of cheese with benelovent paprika on the back end. As soon as I stepped foot in this restaurant, I knew I was in for a heartwarming experience. But as we came to know, it was more than just a restaurant. I ordered six tacos during my time in this establishment, three crispy shrimp and three chicken tinga. Well, I guess I should have checked reviews before visiting. I'm visiting the area for a conference and decided to walk and shop around the mall area while I had some free time. I stopped into Casa del Barco for dinner. It was a cool space with attractive decor and tons of seating, including some tables outside. It wasn't busy and I was seated right away after they asked if I wanted a low- or high-top table, which was nice. My server was nice too. They said they'd only been working there for about a week and they did a great job. Now the not-so-good: the seat I was given was pretty dirty. There were chip crumbs and stains on the pillows on the bench. When I got my food, everything just seemed to be too salty. The chips had a lot of salt on them, the rice & beans, and even the shrimp on my tacos. The guac was pretty good, but overpriced for the size. I did like the pineapple salsa served with my tacos but it was a little over powered by the guac and the salty batter on the shrimp. That would all warrant a 4 start rating for me, but I also had a tray knocked over onto me as I was finishing up my meal. It spilled water (I think?) on my arm and shirt. The server (not my server) apologized but I had to ask them to bring over napkins, which they were not in any hurry to do, so I just had to sit there for a little while with my arm dripping. I almost asked the table next to me for one of their napkins so I didn't have to wait so long. Again, the server was apologetic, but it was uncomfortable and kinda gross. So yeah, definitely won't be back and wouldn't recommend. There are better options nearby. read more

Ambiance - beautiful place, there are some odd features going on here like the empty bottles up front, kind of cheapens the overall decor. Other than that I think this spot hits that mark well. Food - I missed taking photos here. The nachos were very good and the queso was incredible. They have very strange rice. I honestly think it's a restaurant style mix and not "freshly" made. It tastes like the packets you buy and microwave from the grocery store. Their black beans are also lackluster. Since this is the base for many entrees I would recommend they make traditional Mexican style rice, super easy and sure to please. The tacos were decent! I got the mushroom ones which had a large amount of fried cheese - one was delicious but more than one was too much. They did however claim to have hand pressed corn tortillas and they were absolutely store bought. My partner got the burrito and it was okay. Drinks - so bad. Watery and not flavorful. We had a mezcal drink, margarita, and micheladas. We are big michelada fans and while they claim this is traditional, it's not, it was just missing spice and didn't impress. I think with a few tweaks this place could do very well. Rework the drinks and focus on the basics - Mexican food is all about doing simple well. read more
