Really delicious made to order afternoon tea with a wide variety of tea to choose from. She even catered for our lactose free friend by doing a doing tea. Even the cucumber sandwiches tasted amazing which is a feat I think. We had the backroom almost to ourselves and didn't feel rushed at all. I think it is a danger that Casa Angelina is so close to home... I can see myself just "casually stopping in" for far too many treats this Summer! Had a fabulous afternoon tea here with some Yelpers on Sunday. I'm not sure how I managed to eat ALL the food but I was definitely stuffed to the brim when I waddled out.. (oh i totally know how.. it was all DELICIOUS!) I really liked that the afternoon tea isn't the usual "sandwiches" on the bottom tier, which always seem to make me feel a bit bloated from so much bread. The pomegranate & quinoa salad was absolutely DEE-vine and as soon as I got home I instantly regretted not buying a portion to takeaway. There wasn't one thing which I didn't like on the afternoon tea, which is a rare occurance.. I usually find one thing to dislike amongst the plethora of things one gets served at afternoon tea.. but I happily devoured everything which was allocated to me! I may have been eyeing up Sara's leftover brownie.. but shhh! noone else needs to know that! Service was friendly and laid back, I appreciated that Marie Claire came upstairs to tell us what everything was. The house made raspberry and rhubarb & vanilla jams were totally scrumptious! I would happily eat that raspberry jam with a spoon.. Good selection of teas supplied by eteaket, the chilli rooibos was super yummy and I'm sure the chilli helped my belly digest all the scrumminess!! The dining room is preTTy small, so if you're a large group, it will pay to call ahead and book. There was a birthday party of 8 while we were there on Sunday (as a party of 6) and it did feel a bit squished. Having spotted the opening of Casa Angelina and the favourable reports of lots of GF choice, I was keen to check it out and quickly. Scones were on my mind - I know, totally fab cakes and I wanted a scone, but a good scone is the holy grail in gluten free land. Marie Claire, the owner, listed all the options - poor lass, she rhymed them all off to get a response of 'do you have the scones?' and I breathed a sigh of relief when she confirmed that, yes, there were GF scones. There were so many options through - at least six GF cakes and I actually felt bad for not being able to sample more - lemon drizzle, millionaires shortcakes, pistachio, courgette (they use a lot of veggies in cakes so cake here is essentially one of your five a day), banana and walnut cupcakes, apple, and more. As we were positioned with tea on one side and cake on another two then it was cake porn heaven. In the interests of research I will return to sample more varieties but this time it was for a cuppa, scone (with jam and clotted cream) and a shared piece of millionaires shortcake (couldn't resist). I did wonder if the scone would be over done but it was lovely and held together perfectly with the clotted cream and raspberry jam. The millionaires shortcake was lovely - firm, not too hard, but not disintegrating into crumbs with a coconutty based biscuit, nice thick layer of caramel (I hate a skimpy layer!) and a good wedge of chocolate. It was delicious and very rich but having an almighty sweet tooth, I kept eating little bits and was disappointed when the little bits disappeared one by one. Tea is by Eteaket and there are lots of varieties but the breakfast tea was lovely and our pot was topped up with hot water for extra cups. Although it's new, Casa Angelina is already on the Edinburgh hot list I would say. At 3pm on a Saturday (without a booking), we grabbed the last free table and some visitors were left disappointed by not sitting in, though did purchase consolation take away cakes. The vintage tearoom is small (decor is lots of creams and pastel colours) but very cute with vintage style chairs, chaise longue and in a lovely sunny backroom (even though Casa Angelina is at basement level, its not dark and pokey). It is worth booking in advance to avoid disappointment and I plan to go back shortly to sample the gluten free afternoon tea. Cakes are made fresh and on the premises and the chefs were bringing out fresh cakes when we were in which is great to see. Friendly service and great prices considering some places are quite expensive for cake in town. £9.60 for pot of tea for two (refilled with hot water), 2 scones with jam and clotted cream (both ignored the butter) and the millionaires shortcake so budget friendly too :-) read more

Omg where to start?? Well it has to be the fantastic selection if gluten free cakes and scones... Yes gf scones!! This was my first scone in over two years and lets just say it met and exceeded expectations! Gf products can often be dry n crumbly but Angelina's fruit scones were just perfect!! Of course the home made raspberry jam and fresh clotted cream just added that little but extra!! The choice of cakes (many gf) made it soo hard to choose.. Lemon drizzle, pistachio, courgette, banana & walnut, pecan pie, apple frangipani, rocky road and I can't not mention the gf caramel slice to name but a few!! All the cakes are baked on the premises and Angelina has a fantastic knowledge of dietary needs which she incorporates into the most amazing cakes! I'd like to say it's Edinburghs best kept secret but from the constant stream of customers it seems its definitely no secret so if recommend booking in advance to secure a table in the fabulously quaint tearoom! Friends had visited here a few months ago for vegan afternoon tea and I couldn't make it, so this place has been on my go to list for ages. They announced on their Facebook page that they would have vegan cakes and scones in the following day, which happily co-incided with a trip I had planned to Edinburgh! They had one (cinnamon) scone left and my friend generously allowed me to have it, and she opted for the chocolate & peanut butter brownie. They also had carrot cake available (as well as a few non-vegan cake options). I was happy it was a good-sized scone (unfortunately, my photo isn't framed the best way to show it properly!) and came with dairyfree spread and two jams. It was delicious and soft to the bite; I also tried a sliver of the brownie and it was moist and sweet, and also fantastic. The toilet was well equipped with wipes and nappies should any mums/dads/guardians be visiting and in need of baby changing facilities. I would definitely go back - the staff member (owner?) said she was considering making Fridays a vegan cake day so we'd know for sure they'd have cakes in for us, and there have a savouries menu I didn't get a chance to investigate as we were just there for a quick visit, and a very specific cake pitstop! read more

The tearoom itself could use some work - it's rather bare and sparsely laid out (room for at least a handful more tables in there!!) but I say mostly because they ought to to fit more people in there considering scrumptious this spread of tea goodies is. The savories (which in most places tend to be sad and lifeless with bland fillings) were inventive and flavorful - a salmon wrap with cress, an asian noodle salad, balsamic eggplant bruschetta. The sweets were equally delightful - fresh raspberry tart, mini eclairs, salted caramel popcorn panna cotta (!!), candied orange ganache chocolate cake. This is serious. And on top of that, two humongo raisin scones served with orange/rosemary marmalade, some kind of dark berry jam, and a potful of clotted cream. The cost comes to about £14 per person, but we each got an extra pot of tea and I don't believe we were charged for it. If I lived in Edinburgh, you might find me here every afternoon, it's that scrumptious. read more

I would have given casa Angelina 5 stars if only I were as to get the full experience of being in the tea room and getting the full service and attention one would expect to get during afternoon tea? Instead I was placed outside the tea room and across the cashier and next to the baked goodies because there was a party of 18 girls celebrating a bride. I definitely appreciate that they fit me in for a slot for one person especially when I called the day before and that they were accommodating as they were super busy trying to tend to 18 girls. That can be pretty hectic, good thing I wasn't too much trouble. I stayed for about two hours and didn't feel rushed or pressured to leave at all which I enjoyed. I got to experience the green teas, breakfast tea and chili rooibos tea. The chili rooibos tea has quite a spicy kick but it's delicious especially with a cube of sugar. I ended up buying the magnificent blossom green tea since it was a fruity green tea and smelled fantastic. From what I understood about casa Angelina, they have a unique service offering focused on vintage and healthier foods,from your typical afternoon tea like the palm court at the balmoral hotel. I was actually able to experience both so can tell off the bat the noted differences and can say casa was significantly better, x1000! Casas baked goods and desserts are tastier. The savory goods are healthier and tastes fresh. The ingredients are also unique. The scones are similar to balmorals (in my opinion) but I did enjoy the raspberry jam. It was also very tempting not to take a baked sweet home with me but from the looks of other customers coming in and out, they seemed to be very popular! Anyways overall experience, really enjoyed spending my first afternoon tea here and will come back again if I'm ever back in the area. read more

Be sure to call or email in advance for the gluten free scones, which are made fresh per requests. These are the BEST gluten free scones I have EVER had, served with delicious whipped cream and jam! The selection of teas is great as well. We tried a very interested chocolate tea, which was yummy. Wowee. On a scale of 1 to 10 for Afternoon Tea, this place gets an 11. I'm sorry. I'll never make a joke like that again. There was a Yelpy Afternoon Tea here last week and when that stand filled with such deliciousness was brought out I lost some of my sanity and all my mind was shouting at me was 'EAT EVERYTHING NOW!' I sat on my hands as we were talked through what was in front of us. The savoury tier, usually reserved for ham and mustard and cucumber (and maybe some smoked salmon if your lucky) sandwiches was a breath of fresh air. Pomegranate and quinoa salad with beansprouts and added deliciousness, bruschetta with goats cheese, a wrap that I don't know what was in it but I could eat 50 and what I think was polenta bread with smoked(?) salmon. Amazing. Simply amazing. The next tier up was another feast. White chocolate and raspberry tarts, millionaire shortbread cheesecake and a brownie that just oozed chocolately goodness with some mango on top. I'll hold my hands up and say I couldn't handle the brownie as it was on the 'too sweet for Sara' side but I can see so many people I know cramming that straight in their gob. The scones were the cherry on the cake, soft, cakey but bready with clotted cream and a choice between raspberry or rhubarb jam. Finally, the Eteaket teas which just make it. I went for the Bollywood Dream Chai with milk and it was deliciously spicy. In retrospect a green or white tea probably would have helped me pack the food in a bit easier but I don't regret my choice one bit. Casa Angelina itself is smaller than I expected, it's two rooms and a handful of tables. We were next to a birthday lunch and were so close we joined in with the 'Happy Birthday' songs so don't go here for a heart to heart if you don't want to be overheard. The staff were lovely and there's a BYOB policy so some prosecco with your tea won't be frowned upon (Jackie was kind enough to share with the table!) The price reflects the quality of what you get. We got a lovely afternoon tea in very cute surroundings with great quality food, unlimited pots of tea and a wonderful relaxed feeling that suited a Sunday afternoon. read more

Casa Angelina... What has become of you? I go away for a year, I come back and find that Casa Angelina has become darker and far less welcoming. The cakes on the table look a bit dry and tired. Where are all the vegan/gluten free options?! The staff seem indifferent. The interior still looks cosy but it is chilly as we are the only customers. My friend ordered a bowl of porridge which looked quite gey and glutinous. I order the scone feeling disappointed at the cakes on offer. The pots of jam are still generously filled but the clotted cream has been swapped for some meesily portion of whipped cream with vanilla and sugar. The scone itself is very good, but scones are difficult to get wrong really... It costs 50p to use a card if the transaction comes to less than £10 so I end up paying £5.90 for a mediocre overheated cappuccino and the scone. It's sad to mark down what was such a lovely little cafe but circumstances called for it.. read more

It's very cute, it's quaint, it's slightly kitsch and the seven previous, all female reviews will testify to who its key clientele is, but this little spot does more than just a great high tea... We (a group of 3) popped in in search of a light lunch, initially not sure if there would be a table for us to sit at, as from street level it seemed to be just a little delicatessen. Once inside we realised there was another small, but comfortable room to the back were seating for around 12-14 people is provided. What really pleased us about Casa Angelina was the quality of the ingredients used. There was an array of sandwich toppings to choose from - hot smoked salmon and creme-fraiche, goats cheese pâté with sundried tomatoes, humus with harrisa roast vegetables are just the few which we tried, served on bran rolls. Soup of the day was butternut squash with coconut, which too very good. Together roll and soup came to £6.50. On offer also were a selection of superb looking salads (displayed in large ceramic bowls) which would, I believe, would turn even the hardiest of carnivores eyes! (3 Colour Quinoa, Mixed Bean and radish, broad bean, lemon and lentil as well as a third option which unfortunately slips my memory). The detox juice I had - apples, cucumber, ginger, lemon was refreshing, and the other two in our party recommended the peppermint tea from the ample selection of loose leaf teas on offer. It was meant to be a light lunch, but we couldn't leave without trying one of the many great selections of cake/scones/tray bakes. What a delightful little place, and how full of wonderful tasty things it is! A friend met us here for a spot of late-lunch and a catch up; he visits frequently owing to the good selection of gluten-free sandwiches and cakes (such are his dietary needs). He was not wrong. I had a thick, creamy, and delicious hot chocolate along with a falafel and chilli jam wrap. My wife had a brie and plum jelly sandwich, which she correctly described as "each sandwich half is the size of a normal sandwich". So good. Oh, and the sandwiches came with a selection from all the different fresh and delicious salads of the day. I think there were 5 or 6, including a fresh pear salad, potato & tzatziki, and couscous & aubergine. All terrific! I can safely say it was the best plate of vegetables I have tasted in a long time. We paid a very fair price and enjoyed the cozy back room, and on leaving my friend bought some lovely little cakes and biscuits. It was a real treat in an area of town we visit often, so will no doubt be back soon. I can't wait to see what salads are there next time! read more

Really delightful place for a sumptuous afternoon tea in the capital. The decor is designed to recreate the living room of Angelina- the titular matriarch who this lovely cafe is named after! A super fun little trunk with fascinators, pill box hats and fur stoles is just the cutest touch for getting into the vintage spirit! The afternoon tea was genuinely faultless. Delicious sandwiches (cucumber with watercress butter) filled Vietnamese pancakes, avocado and chilli jam wraps and a selection of mouth watering and eye popping cakes! We had egg nog and white chocolate eclairs, boozy cherry pavlova, fig cake with cream cheese icing and chocolate Swiss roll. The scones were like clouds of baked majesty with 2 choices of home made jam and clotted cream. This was all accompanied with Eteaket tea which for me is always on the money. The review is four stars as the service wasn't awesome- the staff forgot to take our tea orders and I had to go look for someone and they seated a group beside us, sharing a long table, but we were left to rearrange where our afternoon was placed to make space for the new customers. A basement level space with friendly service and a tiny room to sit in in the back. What really impressed me here was the quality of the food, given it appears to be just a small cafe space. We had a falafel sandwich with yoghurt and chilli jam, as well as a sunblush tomato sandwich with Philadelphia and some other things... In short, the sandwiches were really, really tasty and came with a small variety of their daily salad. Also, the millionaire's shortbread was ridiculous. I could feel a sugar headache coming on after half the bar, but was totally worth it. In short: Great sandwiches, decadent cakes, good coffee = winner. read more

I absolutely love this place: it is elegant and tidy, the service is impeccable, and the start is nice and friendly. The quality of the craigs is very good and the portions are generous, particularly if you want a cream tea with jam. The thing I love the most was the possibility of getting gluten free stuff, which is still very rare in the UK, where gluten allergy is quite overlooked. We had a salted caramel chocolate cake with big shavings of chocolate on top, and the fluffiest buttercream I've ever had. We also had afternoon tea here and everything was great, diverse selection of savory and sweet things, and the best cream I've had for the climactic scones. The scones really are as good as everyone has reviewed. We went a long ways to try them, and were not disappointed. The vanilla cream with them, yum! And the homemade jams, (we had blueberry lemon) so so good! I can't believe these scones are vegan, they taste so good. I visited Casa Angelina yesterday, Sunday the 27th of March 2016,and it was quite possibly one of the worst customer service experiences I have ever had the misfortune to encounter. Myself and my partner were excited to visit Casa Angelina after reading some reviews about it on Tripadvisor. We entered smiling and greeted the woman behind the counter, our warm welcome was not returned and we were barely acknowledged. We had arrived a little late at just before 4 o'clock and inquired about ordering afternoon tea, we were told that wouldn't be possible as it had to be pre-ordered, which was understandable, so instead we opted for wraps. We attempted to politely talk about the menu to the server; my partner asked after the 3 salad dishes that had been placed on the counter, asking if she could take some and she was sarcastically told that it comes with the food. We were told to take a seat, so feeling more than a little off-putted we went inside to sit down. There were a few women leaving as we entered to sit down, and after they had left we were the only people left in the cafe. The waitress returned with our coffee and we thanked her with a smile (embarrassingly we thought it might be good to "kill with kindness"), so we made an extra effort to be polite - our stony faced server did not respond and walked away. Trying to salvage some of our visit we had a look through the fancy dress box and tried on some hats, while doing so we could hear the waitress complaining loudly to someone downstairs about wanting to leave as she had been working since 8:30. This we reasoned was why we were made to feel so incredibly unwelcome, (she wanted to go home). Our food was then served to us, the halloumi cheese in my wrap had not even been grilled when it had been served to me (but I was too embarrassed to say anything). We decided to eat quickly and just leave, which we did. I wanted to say something at the time but my better half asked me not to and I regret not doing so. This waitress was a disgrace, and made it clear that we were unwelcome and not wanted in the establishment. This was such a pity as the cafe itself was pretty and unusual, but unfortunately none of that matters if the staff are awful to the customers. read more
