Okay, as a vegetarian, I admit to loving their chili! It is a rare treat to have, but sometimes, I just have to give in. With the pandemic going on, they are only offering take-out, which really is too bad (but absolutely understandable) since I enjoy going in and chatting with the waitstaff and regular customers. There is no better piece of Americana than the Carwanna. I don't know how long it's been in existence....but everyone who is originally from Carbondale, PA knows this icon! It's greasy spoon meets small down Americana....and you can't go wrong if you like fries, burgers and hot dogs (but don't require much with ambiance:-)) The waitress brought our beverages in a can (no glasses)....but silverware was clean and the burger with Carwanna sauce was out of this world (as were the cheese fries I had). This review is LONG overdue---like 30 years +. Whenever I go back home to NE PA, my father knows that one meal with me will always be at this wonderful (nostalgic) place. When I first brought my husband here, he was a little unprepared for the amount of onions in the sauce---but we cannot all be born with cast iron stomachs....I love this place; it hold memories of lunches with my grandparents and aunt.....I also noted they now have an 'after hours' service on Friday and Saturday nights at midnight.....I am already planning my next visit! read more

This place is straight out of the great depression era and I mean literally as it goes back to 1927 and still has seating and layout that beckons those bygone times. So average American today may have trouble feeling comfortable sitting in the little wooden booths and even at the counter. The menu still echoes the 20's with small burger patties being cooked up on a grill in front of this places' right side window overlooking the street that sell for a mere $3 and tuna sandwiches with extra mayo or as l like to refer to them as mayo bombs. Chili is indeed depression era style: muddy brown, tongue burning hot, extra salty and can be slopped a top anything on the menu...well maybe not everything but you get the idea. Just think depression era style and how back in those days you had to add cheap slop to make an otherwise impoverished meal go a tad further. The fries are hand cut and can be smothered in the mud or cheese or other crap that can be served a myriad of ways therefore as the menu showcases. And while none of this sounds overly appealing I can't slam this place. Its really a gem, an odd one mind you, that is a little time capsule piece of Americana that has not been obliterated by your Chipoltles, Nandos, McDonalds, Starbucks etc. etc. etc. Besides the burgers and fries aren't that bad. I mean that tiny paddy was really like something mom would cook up for you at home for dinner and you'd have something fresh that has not been treated with formaldehyde unlike at fast food burger joint's which is a dirty little secret that industry doesn't want you to know about. Go to this place if you ever find yourself in this middle of this nowhere town and transport yourself to simpler less corporate times. read more

Great chili cheese burgers, fries and hotdogs. Stick to your ribs hangover food or when you just need something that hits the spot. Terrible service, and thats honest, go to this place during the week 12-6pm and not a single waitress knows how to do their job, carawanna used to be a great place for lunch, was always affordable, and decent food, but they cant even cook a grilled cheese nowadays, never mind anything else on the menu, at least a 30 minute wait for your order, and they always forget something, usually half of the order, and then it takes another 10 minutes just for a side of cheese, the waitresses dont even care or think of your child here, they will not hesitate to put a scalding hot bowl of melted cheese right in front of your baby, we had to leave dinner because of this exact incident, my 1 year old burnt her fingers instantly because the mindless waitress didnt think the baby would try to grab what you give her, so then the manager proceeded to call me and my fiance bad parents for not taking the cheese away!? Well we couldnt even do that! Because the waitress was still holding the cheese while this happened, she thought it would be smart to place this hot food in front of a baby, one of these waitresses was the eldest employee's daughter, so she took our complaint personal and almost put hands on us and our pregnant friend, all because we refused to eat there any longer, we turned down the awful food and cancelled our order, 10 seconds later me and my family were in the middle of a verbal fight outside on the sidewalk, i DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE!!! Not as good as it use to be. Mostly grease and my tummy was not happy about the visit after. I once craved a Carwanna burger, but now I can just as easily pass it by and stop at Mic N Nic's in Childs. I just don't see the appeal anymore. I feel like their recipes must have changed or perhaps because the place is newer and cleaner the grease just isn't there to flavor the food anymore. Although on a serious note, I really do feel like the place could use a good scrub. Even though they've changed buildings it already looks pretty dirty, and I'm just not comfortable eating there. Great place! We were hungry, and just riding through Carbondale on a Saturday after a kid's ball game. My dad mentioned this place was good a long time ago, so let's try it. We stopped. So glad we did. Fantastic Texas wieners on absolutely incredible, light, soft buns. The chili hides a delicious dog and overflows from the sandwich and covers your plate. We drove back there the next weekend just for more Texas wieners. Worth a drive from anywhere in NEPA. (And they're open until something like 4AM weekend nights, too!) read more
