The Service: Even with appointment, the wait time is about 60-90 minutes. Dr. Carvajal has the busiest schedule in this office. The nurse called me in to check my blood pressure, weight, height & some general medical inquiry. Then I was placed in different room waiting for Dr. Carvajal. The doctor is supposedly good, hopefully, I'm still alive to experience that. The staff lacks manners and common courtesy. I happen to be on speaker and everyone heard how rude and unprofessional this ERIKA M was to me. Considering that I was super nice and offering to help her obtain authorization from my insurance. Dr. Carvajal said he needs to do my surgery within 2 weeks but I have to have a CAT scan first. And she has zero f@cks about it. She puts me on hold to get a code for my authorization. She comes back and says, "What do you want?" like I interrupted her from a very important matter. I said, "you were gonna give me a code?" She was like, "what code?" I said, the CPT code for my insurance so I can call and verify, then she raised her voice and said, i don't know what you're talking about. There's no code!" Huh? So how are you trying to get the authorization then? It was so obvious she has not contacted my insurance yet. I have a very good PPO and never had any problem. True master of his craft and a genuine doctor. My dad went through a colon surgery and a huge tumor was removed by Dr Carvajal without any complications. I was very worried about the surgery and he sensed that in and said this in presence of my dad. Don't worry he is going to return back normal after I am done with this 45 min procedure. Great outcome, total wizard!!! Absolutely awesome surgeon for hernias! Worth the drive to Glendale versus using a local surgeon. Our doctor said Sam Carvajal was the best in SoCal and he was not kidding. Dr. Carvajal actually developed the laparoscopic procedure that was used, and you always want to go see the best in the business when you're having surgery. Dr. Carvajal has a good, dry sense of humor. Mr. Picky went for his initial meeting with the surgeon and was surprised when the surgeon said, "Well, you don't have a hernia." But then it got cleared up when he added, "Nope, you've got THREE!!!" Jokes aside, his technique is AMAZING!!! Instead of multiple incisions or surgeries, he went in laparoscopically and did all three at one time. This is so much better for the patient. It reduces the likelihood of infections and other problems, and minimizes the amount of recovery time. They went in through the bellybutton, lifted the stomach muscle, patched all three up in one go and then made a quick exit. The glue falls out once the patient is healed and there's no scar at all!!! Mr. Picky had two days of pain on the recovery (didn't even use any pain pills) and then he was fine. Yes, he had to limit how much he could lift for a few weeks, but that's normal and no big deal, along with the swelling. Seriously, I was in pre-op watching and he was in and out for surgery on all three hernias and the prep in less than 30 minutes!!! I was not surprised to find out recently that Dr. Carvajal is also the surgeon for a friend of mine and she raved about him and also thought he was wonderful. I'm telling you, you want to be in competent hands, and his are. Not only that, but he had a wonderful assisting surgeon, I think his name was Dr. Park, who had a wonderful bedside manner when talking to us in the preliminary meeting. It took about eight weeks to get a preliminary appointment and then, because it wasn't urgent, it was somewhat later before the surgery was done, this guy is very busy and in high demand which is no surprise to me. But, I'm telling you, we felt he was more than worth the wait!!! Unfortunately, I told a relative to go see him, they did not, and a month following his hernia surgery, he is still suffering and regretting that he didn't try to see Dr. Carvajal, too. read more

I came to Dr. Carvajal so he can perform a surgery that was approved by my G.I specialist. When he walked into the room he greeted me and told me that he does not want to perform the surgery. He blamed his poor decision on his observational skills of my behavior. He said that I have an anxiety disorder, which he diagnosed himself just from looking at me for 2 minutes and that is what is causing my heartburn. A diagnosis like this requires a psychologist or psychiatrist, which he is not. This should be a case of medical malpractice, but I can not pursue it because doctors in California are immune to lawsuits as they are so well protected by laws. I am assuming that he was not gonna make a lot of money from performing this surgery on me and sent me home. He is part of a bad batch of doctors that are unfortunately in the profession for the money. Don't waste your time with him if your surgery won't make him a lot of money. I am a professional trumpet player, and I had to totally stop playing when my hernia was diagnosed. Three weeks later, I met Dr. Carvajal for the first time. He promised that I could start playing my trumpet the day after surgery (although he didn't promise that it wouldn't hurt). He said that even if it hurt to play, I couldn't damage any of the repairs he would make. He was good about giving all the explanation needed and answering my questions. Two and a half weeks later, he operated and found that I actually had a double hernia on one side and one small one on the other, and he repaired everything. I did start playing the next day, and each day after that. I haven't had any noticeable recovery pain. Just some impressive bruising that is fading away each day, just as he told me to expect. My experience with Dr. Carvajal was totally positive and I'm grateful for his skill. The only negative I have is the waiting time - three weeks to get my first appointment with him, and then waiting for the hospital to schedule the operation. Although the operation happened about three weeks after my doctor appointment, that was only because there was a cancellation. Otherwise, I would still be waiting. Don't waste your time at this office! I'm a doctor myself with a very busy schedule and this was the biggest waste of my time! My father has been suffering from a hernia pain that has progressively gotten worse. I took my father to him over a month ago for a surgical consultation. He saw my father for the initial visit, suggested surgery, and billed for his services. It's been over a month and Dr. Carbajal has yet to "complete his notes" regarding my father's surgery. I have called four times until now and have gotten the same response every time, "the doctor has not completed his notes." I just called office of Dr Sam Carvajal and a certain Erika answered the phone with a rude tone in answering the call. My aunt was referred to Dr Sam by our primary care Physician and he said he was a very good Vascular Surgeon. When i called , THE LADY was asking me why am i getting an appointment not in accommodating tone and no good manners. Normally, when another Dr referred you to his co doctor they know each other or by reputation. It seems like they only take patients with certain diagnosis. I asked if she needs the diagnosis and she said "NO, i just need why do you want to see the doctor." Isn't common sense you need to see the Dr. because you need help with his specialty? SO then. i read the description of the diagnosis. She put me on hold and later ask me... " WHAT IS HER INSURANCE?" in a rude tone and i that's it, i said to myself this is enough...so i just told her , " You are such a rude person" i hang up , this is not the kind of office i want my aunt to be treated at. Beware of this Doctor. I was brought up to respect Doctors. So it is hard for me to write this review. He might hurt your body and you will never be the same again. He is operating for profit versus for people's good health. I wonder what he bought with the ten grand he made from me, a car, more stocks a chandelier? He will not help you with a good diagnosis of your illness. You must do that with other doctors before even considering talking to Dr. Carvajal. He is good at telling you his credentials. What he will not tell you is how to alleviate your problem other ways. Technically he is a surgeon so perhaps in his mind it is not his job. But ethically the man knows a lot about these operations so why not share his real knowledge with you. I believe he has other Doctors working with him to give a green light to unnecessary operations. Because I had good data and information regarding my illness that he chose to ignore. He never offered me an understanding of potential other causes for my problems. I found out later he could not cure my problem with an operation. Dr. Carvajal has created in me now 10 more additional problems in my life. I became worse. When I went to him for understanding and relief he lied to me about what he actually did to me and again thought I was a totally different person with a totally different problem. Dr Carvajal is a fabulous doctor. His bedside manner is fabulous and he makes you feel like the most special person on earth. He is also an extremely gifted surgeon who actually cares about his patients. That said the office is just not run well. When most people are waiting 1-2 hours after their appointed time to see the doctor it's too long. There's no reason to schedule things this way. I've worked in medical marketing and management for over 20 years and honestly I still don't understand why this happens. It's as if our time as patients is not as important as the doctors time. I know that's not the case but that's what it feels like. I would still go to him because he is a wonderful surgeon and great guy but just beware that the wait times are crazy long. read more

I'd give this guy 10 stars if I could. My mom has seen so many doctors since her pancreatitis began 10 months ago and it had been downhill from there, with many complications. Dr. Caravajal saw her once because her regular doc was busy, and he suggested a laproscopic procedure none of the other docs had thought of- and there had been many. He just performed it, and she is headed to recovery and being fully cured. He is a very gifted doc and our family is so grateful to have ended up in his care. What a blessing he is. We have been sitting over an hour waiting, I approached the front desk and let them know my father was ill and unable to wait this much. The woman at the front desk told me there were 9 patients ahead. 9 patients?? Are you kidding me?!! Why would you schedule this many people if you cant stay on schedule. I saw dr. Carvajal in October 2017 i liked him however I noticed no chart documentation. He said his office would contact me in two weeks to schedule surgery. After three weeks I called his office to see what the delay was. The office worker said Dr hadn't updated my file with his notes. Back to my original concern about no visible documentation. The person on the phone said they would talk to his nurse and call me. Fast forward one month later still no call I called again they said they would call me back. Bottom line: I initially saw him in the middle of October, i have called five times with not one return call. I found a different doctor and made an appointment. This is serious stuff. I'm waiting to find out what my future holds and they can't even call me back. He has a good reputation. I have asked around but I really don't know how. Footnote to this review I found another dr much better extremly efficient. The caveat to this review i had surgery and in Pre-op i saw Dr. Carvajal with a patient in preop right next to me I wanted to tell him about the negative experience. Dr. Carvajal is a really excellent surgeon. I showed up with a lot going on, an abscess in my colon and in my spleen, as well as a gall bladder that was not functioning due to stones . If you need a good surgeon, you definitely want to consider him. On the down side, if you need your hand held, he is not your man. His is one of the busiest surgical practices I have encountered and it is very hard to get an appointment at any point, I am waiting for a post op follow up now! He doesn't spend a lot of time with you in the exam room or pre-and post-op, so if that is important to you, then look elsewhere. I was focused on having a Surgeon who could deal with my various complications and am completely satisfied. My recovery from my second and hopefully last surgery has been terrific and I am feeling the best I have felt in at least six months. There have been a lot of complaints about his staff, I am not complaining but must say you have to plan on being put on hold EVERY time you want to make an appointment and there is usually a long wait for a slot. I wish I could leave 0 stars. I took a good friend to a post op appt because she experienced some very painful issues after a biopsy She left his office crying. He was condescending, mocked her and advised her that her breast looked "beautiful". To say he has no bedside manner is an understatement. It was terrible. And not suprisingly the front office staff were shockingly rude. I sat there and listened as a woman came in who obviously was trying to get a procedure authorized and with managed health care we all know how daunting this can be. The woman "helping" her and I use that term loosely gave off the most impatient tone of voice. She advised her that the office would call her, she didn't need to call again. Do no harm is the Hippocratic oath. He missed that memo, entirely. He has no business dealing with patients. Pathology or the Coroner's office would have been preferable. I was mortified when we left the office and my friend explained how he mocked her by sticking out his lower lip like a child pouting and made whining noises. This lack of compassion is unconscionable. My friend was in excruciating pain and by the time we left and I got her home, she was more upset then when I picked her up. I wasn't even the patient, and I never thought I would write a review like this. I come from a family of physicians, one of my brothers is an eye surgeon. Horrible doctor. Wouldn't listen to a thing I said after my surgery. I actually ended up with an infection and needing a second surgery because he didn't listen to me when I told him I was not feeling good and wanted to stay an extra day at the hospital. My wife has had serious stomach issues for 6 years. It got progressively worse until she could not eat and lost 30 plus pounds. 5 doctors including extensive tests at Cedars Siani in Beverly Hills told her there was nothing wrong. We went to see Dr Caravajol since he had taken her gall bladder out years ago. He reviewed the tests from all the other doctors and in 5 minutes discovered her stomach had inverted and went into her chest cavity. Operated on her 2 days later and 5 weeks later she is back to normal. Feels better then she has in 4 years. As far was we are concerned he is the BEST. He listened to her and reviewed the tests to find out why she was hurting. Other doctors thought they knew what it was and only looked to prove they were right. They did not look for the cause.
