It's time for what is turning out to be an annual Carrol's Corn review. The same work event once again sent us all a bag of the triple mix popcorn as part of a swag pack, and I have no complaints. I mean, it did break my January streak of being entirely vegan (because butter and cheddar), but I'm not too mad about it. It's a sacrifice I was willing to make. I don't know how many servings are in a bag because the nutrition label doesn't say, but I'm sure it is supposed to be at least two. This popcorn is SO addicting. It's always been a favorite for my immediate family but my extended family recently tried it and they are obsessed. Now when I'm down town in Rochester I have to take orders to pick up some and deliver to my out of town family. The popcorn really is that good. Our favorite is the triple pack. All the flavors in it are good it's hard to choose a favorite. The shop itself is cute and convenient to get to. The staff is really nice and friendly. This is a solid place to pick up an ice cream cone or frozen yogurt. The place could be a little cleaner; we were there about an hour before closing. My husband had the vanilla yogurt with hot fudge. He said it was good. I had the Zanzibar chocolate ice cream which was one of the best chocolate ice creams that I had ever had. Last night, I wanted to have it again so we raced through the subways to get there after dinner before they closed at 8pm. We arrived at 7:50pm and were so disappointed to find they had closed early. If I'm ever back in Rochester, I'll come by again for that chocolate ice cream. read more

Five Star: Georgia Peach is my favorite flavor here! It's not as sweet as the other flavors but definitely just as refreshing and delightful. It's one of those flavors that you can never get tired of. The citrus is an amazing touch. Four Star: Cake Batter is sweeter than the georgia peach if you're feeling like more of a sweet tooth. The flavor is rich. By itself, it's a bit too sweet but if you complement it with a more citrus flavor like the georgia peach, it's awesome! Fairly decently sized selection of toppings as well. Blueberries and raspberries are fresh and complement the yogurt well. Popping boba is a great treat too! They have an interesting, smooth texture and exploding fruit juice inside that's just a joy to eat. This is a great treat around the Mayo Clinic. read more

This past month, I've been spending a lot of time at Mayo Methodist Hospital due to a family member being ill. Everyday, multiple times a day, I see countless people walking around with bags of popcorn. I finally decided to make my way to Carroll's Corn and let me tell you, this was one of the best foodie decisions I've made while I've been in Rochester. I asked for a sample of the triple mix (chicago mix) and I gulped down that sample like I was doing shots on my 21st birthday! This popcorn isn't just good, it's amazing on top of a heaping pile of epic goodness. The popcorn is flavorful, perfectly popped and you can definitely taste the freshness compared to buying a bag at a sporting event or at a super market. When I shared the bag with members of my family, they politely started with one piece of popcorn, followed by an overflowing handful that was gobbled up in seconds. Carroll's Cup is a serve-yourself frozen yogurt shop in the basement of the Kahler Hotel. It seems like a big hit with families with kids -- they get to draw up their own yogurt and then add their own toppings...fun! The yogurt isn't bad, it's just not that special. Nowhere near as good as Pinkberry, but it's passable, like TCBY in the 1980s. The toppings look pretty good; there are a number of choices, including fruits, candy bars, and hot fudge. Breakfast cereal toppings weren't around, sadly. Hit this place up if you need something sweet in between Mayo visits; it's conveniently placed and can keep you going throughout the day. read more

Here's some really good popcorn. I got there too late in the day to get anything but a prepackaged bag of popcorn, so I got a bag of the triple mix, the caramel, cheese and regular corn. It's all very good. I took off one star because we have a popcorn shop in Minneapolis that has popcorn that's just as good with more intense flavor and more of a variety (like a vanilla glazed corn, that's soooo good) including a double cheddar tastes like velvet. But you can tell Carroll's uses good quality corn, and it does taste good. It's a little hard to find, it's way in the corner of the subway level of the Kahler grand. If you're at the Mayo it's not a far walk at all, just a bit of a maze to find. I had 2 people stop me and ask where I got the popcorn, they both said they had seen lots of people carrying it around but didn't know where to go get some. I tried to explain and hope they found it. There is a map down in the subway level at some point but it isn't super easy to find things down there. read more

Though the owner has for years (at least as long as I've been here) carried all sorts of snack, he is known around town for having the best popcorn. I am not a fan of the exotically-flavored kernels but the plain butter: Mmmmm. Warning: it's pricey. But each kernel is huge! Malted-milk-ball-sized huge. And consistent. No broken pieces.
