And I have to say that was the best ghost tour I have ever been in outside of Gettysburg, it has to rank as the second best ghost tour, it was so amazing and so much fun and the tour guide was excellent, he told stories of ghosts and historical information it was THE most interesting tour I have been on since Gettysburg, I ABSOLUTELY recommending you just have to go on this tour, you may or may not see a ghost or capture anything on a camera but the guide is EXCELLENT!! Charging $189 for this experience is completely unacceptable. The meal was advertised as a three-course dinner, but we were only served two. Worse, the food was practically inedible. We both love salmon, but what was served tasted old, fishy, and completely unfresh, we couldn't eat more than a single small bite. The sweet potatoes were bland, the lima beans were oddly sweet, and the dinner rolls were literally handed to us in plastic Ziploc bags. For $189, there should at least be basic meal choices (like baked chicken, rice/mashed potatoes, and green beans) instead of forcing a poorly prepared, single option on everyone. My window seat was so severely scratched up that I couldn't even see out of it and had to move. Once I moved, the view consisted almost entirely of overgrown brush, weeds, and the backs of new house developments. Despite being tied to a historical station and museum, there was no narration, no historical facts, no music, and no entertainment whatsoever. You are essentially sitting in total silence on a slow train eating terrible food. This trip was nowhere near worth $189. Potential visitors should save their money, and management seriously needs to rethink their catering, pricing, and overall guest experience.

I discovered the Walkersville Southern Railroad when researching Polar Express inspired train rides…read morein the area- our kiddos aren't quite old enough to fully grasp the magic of the experience, so I've been hesitant to book the large immersive expensive experience offered by main lines- I thought it would be a good idea to start with a more 'low-key' experience & see how it went- ~60min train ride with a visit from Santa, carolers, and the conductor- the kids had a magical wonderful time- they enjoyed having their photos taken, their tickets punched, and hearing the train go choo- I would say their joy made the experience- on its own the train was as expected more basic-a bit underwhelming- 30minutes out, then 30 minutes backward. I understand development happens so seeing a lot of backyards of houses, development centers, and more modern town- it is what it is- but for a next experience I would like to find a ride that offers more scenic experience & a bit more variety in the ride I was also a bit disappointed with the kid's Santa's gift- the advertisement came off like the gift was a bell (reminiscent of Polar Express), but the kids were gifted some sticker create a train kit- it really wasn't a universal gift for all ages- both my kids weren't old enough to understand what it was, so basically I put the gift together-they said cool & moved on- it would have been nicer to have something more rewarding from Santa.

We then enjoyed a fabulous high tea at Table 1837 Glen Rock Mill Inn. There was so much to eat that we left with a doggie bag. There were only 3 choices of tea but the salted caramel was delicious. They had 4 finger sandwiches, 2 scones and fruit. We also received a grilled chicken salad as an entree accompanied by a glass of wine (there were 3 choices of wine. Originally we were offered mimosa but then they ran out of orange juice). For dessert, we had Pots du Crème. We boarded the train and headed back to New Freedom. I'd definitely recommend and intend on doing another event in the future.

Plenty of free parking right outside the gift shop/museum (handicapped parking, too). We browsed the gift shop first--lots of train-lover trinkets, and of course, Adventure Buddy snagged a couple of those irresistible 3D wooden train models. I was over the moon when check-in handed us oversized souvenir tickets--complete with our traincar and seats punched out. Such a fun keepsake! The small museum next door took maybe 15 minutes but was nicely done and staffed by a friendly volunteer. After a quick pit stop, we boarded the D. Reed Anderson car. The open windows made for a breezy ride past pretty scenery--green trees, a creek, even small towns like Glen Rock where folks waved from porches. Actors in full Civil War character moved through the cars during the ride, building the story of Union vs. Confederate soldiers battling over rumored gold. At times it was hard to hear or follow the storyline depending on where you sat, but the big skirmish at the park--cannon blasts, musket fire, and all--was definitely the highlight. Tickets were $31.99 and worth it for a few hours of history-meets-theater-meets-train ride fun. This is a great daytrip for adults (grab lunch before and ice cream after nearby). Kids would love the trains, but younger ones may struggle with the length of this particular event. We'll definitely be back in the fall for one of their seasonal rides!
