National Wildlife Visitor Center - 01.20.25 when the ponds freeze over, the colors create a beautiful contrast to the browning forest and gliding waterfowl

    National Wildlife Visitor Center

Fish and Wildlife Refuge [Laurel MD]…read more Unfortunately, because of the Federal Holiday (MLK) at the time of our visit the Visitor Center was closed but we briefly connected with nature and just explored a little bit of the area which offered 13,000 of wetlands, meadow, and forest. Visitor Center hours are from Wednesday through Saturday, 10:00a to 4:00p. The grounds are open sunrise to sunset except on Tuesdays (closes at 4:00p). We followed the hiking trail on the South Tract. We followed the trail... the lake on the right side. I was too scared to walk on the frozen lake but we saw a couple walking on it while taking selfie photos. The scenery is beautiful in winter time with the snow. We don't see snow like this in California. There were interpretive signs on the trails. During winter season we should see a wide variety of waterfowl; American Tree, Swamp, and Savannah Sparrows; and Rusty Blackbirds on the lake shores... we were on the lookout but I guess we weren't looking hard enough as we did not spot any. So what is this place? It's not a National Park but is one of the largest science and environmental education center in the Department of Interior created to conserve and protect wildlife and wildlands through research. We ended up checking out the National Wildlife Visitor Center while staying with family in Crofton…read more It lead to a lovely afternoon. The center itself is like a little museum. It has informational exhibits that range from learning about different wildlife to man's relationship with nature. The trails themselves are really nice, and diverse. You'll have an opportunity to walk through the woods, the water, and open fields. They're well manicured and labeled, so there's no getting lost. You'll also have an opportunity to see some beautiful wildlife. There were lots of beautiful birds flying around, and if you look down, you're guaranteed to see some tiny frogs. There's probably more, but that's all we saw. I definitely think this park is worth checking out if you live in the area, or are visiting. It was a lovely afternoon.

The building's thoughtful design really sets the tone for a meaningful visit. They've done an outstanding job sharing the layered stories of the Battle of Gettysburg--why it happened, how it unfolded, and its lasting impact on our nation. Their storytelling truly honors the sacrifices made, weaving history into every exhibit. Staff were exceptionally helpful and knowledgeable. The interactive displays were a highlight--my kids especially loved the miniature cannon where they could "pull the trigger," and the realistic cannon shells you could actually lift to feel their weight. Super engaging! And please, Don't skip the Cyclorama. This massive 360° painting weighs a staggering 8 tons--4 tons of canvas and 4 tons of paint--and it's presented so vividly you feel like you're standing there in the middle of the battlefield. In short, the Gettysburg Museum and Visitor Center delivers history with clarity, compassion, and creativity. A truly unforgettable visit -- 5 stars all the way!

Also, they are prepared to handle bus loads of people at a time - these guys are pros! Fun fact: Only 5% of people pass the Gettysburg battlefield guide test -- these guys know their stuff! We went in our own one time, and went back with a guide and it was a way better experience. Highly recommend going with a proper guide to really understand Gettysburg!

Chesapeake Heritage and Visitors Center - Waterfowl is a way of life in the Chesapeake Bay region.

The Chesapeake Heritage & Visitors Center is closed, but their outdoor trails are still accessible. It was an overcast day and only a few people were out, so maintaining the social distancing was easy. There is a boardwalk that crosses the marshes, and then another trail along the outer part, along a small sandy beach. There are a few benches and picnic tables. It made for a nice, quiet outing.

The staff members are welcoming and can provide information about the local area. The observation towers offering great views of the Ken Narrows Waterway, the Chester River and the Chesapeake Bay. There are two towers - one on the second level that is accessible via an elevator and one on the third level that is only accessible via a spiral staircase. The elevator may be locked so if you need to use it, let the staff now. The Chesapeake Bay has a very rich culture and lots of history. Here you can learn about Civil War Era slavery, Native American inhabitants in the 1400s, waterfowl as an industry, the seafood business and the famous four mile long Bay Bridge. The Chesapeake Heritage Center also has some pets - a few little Horseshoe Crabs, about two inches in diameter, and a friendly terrapin turtle. It was neat to see little Horseshoe Crabs digging around in the sand. From the center there is a boardwalk through a marshy area that connects to a foot path/trail that goes to the Chester River.

SCAM. Please do not waste your money going through this agency. We were given many false promises,…read moreand we did not receive refunds when we did not get the services we purchased. I greatly, GREATLY regret going through STS. To specify: We purchased a $100 ticket for a booze cruise, which was scheduled for a Monday. It kept getting pushed back each day with a different excuse from Charlie each time. Finally, on Thursday, Charlie claimed that the company cancelled due to wind, yet there were many other booze cruises that took place on that same day. For those people who specifically paid for the booze cruise, we were not offered a refund. There were many rumors that the cruise was never booked, and Charlie was just coming up with excuses to avoid confrontation. It seemed that there kept being a need for more and more unnecessary purchases, and that was pushed onto the students by STS. We did not know what we were getting into nor how much money we would end up spending for nothing. In general, there was a huge lack of communication that left students lost and confused. A group of our friends were mistakenly driven to Atlantis rather than Breezes, and the two are substantially far from each other. The taxi driver took the students off the main road and stopped at an ATM along the way. You can imagine how scary this would be for a student visiting a country that they have never been to before. It was almost an intimidating atmosphere, threatening us that if we lost our little plastic wristbands that it would be a $200 charge to replace, that if we caused the slightest damage to the room it would be a $150 charge per roommate. There is more I could say, but it is too much to type. I hope you can see that going through STS was a TERRIBLE decision.
