The highlight of my meal was supposed to be the brisket Mac and cheese but it ended up being the side salad. I don't have many details but there were radishes, Goat cheese, carrot shavings, and pecans with what may have been a strawberry vinaigrette dressing. I'm not sure, but whatever it is you need to try it. Nice ambiance, lots of happy hour specials and a rooftop that is available for mostly large parties if I remember right. The Mac and cheese with brisket actually has the brisket cooked within instead of placed on top like some places. Very generous portion. Carrigan's is a very niché hipster place to hang out on the weekend or after work for happy hour. When I went after work one Friday night the balcony was closed for a private party but the party was also inside at some point. The food was good, and the ease of catching the attention of the bartender was appreciated. I asked the bartender to surprise me with a drink and he ended up making me the same thing that both of my friends decided on themselves; the Deception. The bartender also said this was their most popular drink. It was good but when I said "surprise me" I kind of expected a newly thought up drink just for me. Carrigan's gets 3 stars from me because it seems like a weird mix between a bar and a sit down restaurant; they have servers bringing out food to your table but all orders are taken at the bar. Servers take up your plates and drinks when you're finished but when asked for a glass of water I was directed to a self-serve water station in the corner that also served as a busboy station for dirty dishes, extra condiments, and silverware. At the very least they could make the water station look more customer friendly. The lighting is also too dim to read the menu when the sun goes down. read more

A weekly visit is a must for me. I usually come for lunch which does have a different menu than the dinner menu but both are excellent have some seasonal items that rotate. The decor of and vibe of the place are very industrial chic which is dope in my opinion. Couple that with plenty of patio seating and a fast casual meets cocktail bar and you have a recipe for success. And the Carrigan's corndog is famous for a reason -- just look at that mouthwatering creation. The atmosphere is perfect for a casual evening with friends or family, with a beautiful rooftop area so you can enjoy your drinks while watching the sunset. The only reason I'm taking off 1 star is because I would recommend a more diverse food menu; I feel as though there are few options. Service is usually very speedy. The food has never disappointed. I go sometimes just for a ghost pepper cheeseburger to-go. One of the best burgers I've ever had. Thanks to all of the FABULOUS Yelp reviews, Carrigan's was on my "must-do" list when visiting "B-Ham." Knowing I wouldn't have much time in the city, I booked an earlier flight just so I could be sure I had time to stop by Carrigan's. Unfortunately, the flight arrived late, so we rushed over to Carrigan's, but got there just as the kitchen was closing. Fortunately, however, the SUPER AWESOME staff were kind enough to accommodate us, & we were able to enjoy the great food, drinks, & cool, laid-back atmosphere that makes Carrigan's so well-known around town. They were very nice, & they didn't make us feel rushed at all. THANK YOU!!! :) We started with the Jalapeno Boiled Peanuts. They were super tasty, & I wish we had these in SoCal! Next, the Beets & Greens Salad with Ahi, which was just kinda average.... The burger was good, but I especially LOVED the "Wickles Pickes." I will be looking for these in SoCal to snack on. Finally, we had the one-the-only.......CORNDOG!!! Oh....my....goodness!!! I'm not a huge fan of corndogs, but this corndog was absolutely delicious! The hype is REAL!!! Super cool, completely hipster spot in a very industrial-feeling part of Birmingham! We went for lunch, and it wasn't too crowded. Kind of place where you grab a menu and order at the bar. We were all really impressed with our food! I tried the Caesar salad with blackened Ahi tuna and it was pretty great! I loved having a healthy-ish option with my beer! They have a great beer selection! And their cocktails looked great (but they don't start serving liquor and cocktails until later in the day, so we didn't get to try any). My boyfriend and I decided to try this spot after a stressful day of classes. It was around 3PM and the atmosphere was great: very quiet, well decorated, and lots of natural light. We started with the jalapeño boiled peanuts and a grapefruit beer. The beer was outstanding and the peanuts were just ok. But this is someone who worships canned Peanut Patch boiled peanuts, so I don't have the most refined palette there. For our meals, I ordered the salmon salad and he ordered the French dip sandwich. My salad was so delicious, easily the best salad I've ever had. Salmon was perfect and the drizzle of soy glaze was the perfect complement. Surprisingly filling too. Ok kids, don't let the trek through some sketchy areas scare you off. I came on a Tuesday, at about 6:15 so it was super mellow. Now, be warned that this place is a hipster terrarium but they have good drink and eats. I had the fry pile with added bacon. Holy smokes is that a lot of food and boy was it some tasty starch! Too much for me to finish alone with two beers. The two beers I had were nice and one was even local. (Which is always a good thing.) The beer menu has a great selection but the types aren't laid out, so you may need to harass a bartender to get a synopsis on the selection. Unfortunately our stomach eyes selected all fried food which left us both feeling blah about halfway through but legit would have been excitingly delicious to us in our past. A homemade corndog is a former dream of mine. After years of searching I finally found a place that makes a real corndog in house that doesn't start out in a box in the freezer. It's definitely no 50 cent corndog from Sonic that you zigzag with packets of ketchup and mustard. This baby is rested atop a pile of fresh cut fries and slathered with savory sauces and crumbled cheese. I know from experience that you won't find this anywhere else. It's a great entree but just tooooo much deep fried for me. I would say that the only thing we really didn't like was the chili on the loaded fries. Those giant kidney beans aren't our favorites anyway and to me just don't pair well with fries. I just wish we'd stopped for a moment and thought about ordering something lighter and fresher off the menu. I have been here on several occasions and had different experiences each time. My not so great experiences have been on Friday and Saturday nights. They get extremely crowded and it's standing room only. I had to elbow my way up to the bar and fight to grab the barkeep s attention to order drinks. It was also very loud to the point of being unpleasant. I also don't like having to shout to be heard. My better experience was on a Wednesday night. Surprisingly it was crowded but after a short wait at the bar we were able to grab a table. They had several nice beers on tap and a full bar with wine. Some of the members of our party got food. Yes, there's a lot across the street, which they have a cutely lit terrace in front of. The street isn't busy at all, so not to worry about getting run over. The entrance is past their patio area. Inside: trendy gastropub. How else can I describe it? I guess what they call 'hipster,' but that's every gastropub back where I'm from. You'll need to try the food here. It is a bit pricey, but it's different from the usual affair you find elsewhere nearby. Since I've been loading up on carbs and comfort food my whole trip, I went for the beets and greens to start. I also added seared ahi tuna. It comes on a metal tray, so the spread is beautiful with all those vibrant colors. A light meal which was balanced with a hearty IPA. I also tried the infamous corn dog. I didn't have enough room to eat the whole thing, but it was tasty. The sausage in the middle has some spice to it, while the outside is covered with hipster ranch and a BBQ-like ketchup. I'm very 'anti-condiments,' but I tried it. It's good, but very rich. The hipster ranch is more likened to a cheese sauce. However, I will say that the fries that came with the corn dog were bomb. I ended up eating more fries than corn dog, but at least you can box your food up so you can enjoy the rest later. Pro-tip: if you're not in a group, if you dine around the corner at the bar, it's relatively quieter than the main area. Plus people won't be crowding around you to order drinks and food. Pretty chill place (for lunch). In town from Houston for work and a co-worker came in from Atlanta and recommended this place. Glad we came! It was quiet around 1 for lunch on a Wednesday. Walk in and order at the bar, grab a number, and have a seat. Ordered the fish and chips sandwiches. Not your traditional fish. The fish in the sandwich is grilled (not breaded and fried) and it's skin on. It was a little on the salty side (could have been the kale chips/chips) but the salt content was a little high for my desired liking. They have a nice outside area. It's on the edge of downtown so the street is quiet. Would love to check this spot out as a happy hour destination. I'm sure it's a happening place. Staff was super friendly too!! read more

I had heard hours before that you can't come here and here and not get the corndog so thats the first thing we did lol. The bartenders are geniuses. Oh boy was it delicious. So there are some very strong positives with this place that outweigh any negatives. I'll start off with the positives. The location was very cool. It's a great gastropub with indoor and outdoor seating with a cool vibe. It wasn't until I was leaving that I saw there was an upstairs! I didn't check it out but it seemed to be happening up there. My mac n cheese was amazing and super creamy. I like to think I'm a mac n cheese connoisseur and I'd give it a solid 4/5. Only reason it's not a 5/5 is because I save those for when I'll go back to a place solely for the mac n cheese and crave it. It's a great option that you definitely need to try though. I also had the corn dog and brussel sprouts. I got the ketchup on the side because the bartender said it had a kick to it, it did not. Could've had it on there. It was extremely tasty and a cool twist on a fair staple. The brussel sprouts are fried and extremely crunchy. I loved the one bite I took but I'll get to that later. I got the Southern Culture drink which was super good and refreshing but forgot to get a pic of it, the bartenders are very good at their jobs. Now for the negatives. The corn dog was only warm, especially compared to the other food but tasted good enough to ignore and imagine how good it is when hot. Now the brussel sprouts... I asked them to describe the brussels and they said they were plain but really crunchy from being fried. When I tasted them, there was a crunch but was also sweet. I immediately knew there was some type of glaze that they didn't describe. It was a honey glaze and I am allergic to honey so that was not fun. Thankfully I didn't get enough to cause too much of an issue. But it's very dangerous to leave out information. No, I didn't say I had an allergy, but I did ask her to describe the dish and it wasn't done well obviously. The bartender was very quick to remove it from the bill though which was nice. The queso, I haven't mentioned yet which is crazy. I've never said this in my life but SKIP THE QUESO. It's gross and I've never not scraped the bowl free of cheese but I barely touched it. It tasted like a vegan queso my friend said. To me it tasted like if you mixed queso and hummus in equal parts. And it was just gross. Super weird consistency. My last issue with this place is the service. We order everything at the bar, it's dropped off to you and then anything you need you go back up to the bar. As a previous server, I never tip less than 20% but that's all I could do here and nothing more. I was a little annoyed at that too because I wasn't getting served and I really just wanted to tip on the drink service. What's worse is they actually put percentages for a 50% tip on your tab. This place has been on our list for a while, and it was so great to finally check it off. Carrigan's offers many options most Bham gastropubs are missing, including unique bar food, unique drinks, ample parking, and a generous amount and variety of indoor/outdoor seating. In addition, the music is perfectly on-tone for grown ups who just want to chill and hang out with a date or friends. We had the oatmeal cream pie (and could bathe in that cream cheese ice cream!) and the jalapeño boiled peanuts (meh...the spice was good, but we didn't even eat half of them because they were so bland otherwise. More salt (much more salt) would help. Unlike many similar places in Bham that are too much of one thing or too little of another, Carrigan's is just right.
