Stopped by for a bite to kick off my husbands birthday weekend. I genuinely did not realize how big this space was. Indoor/outdoor seating with a covered patio that was clean was definitely a plus to our experience. Upon arrival we were sat immediately and served chips and salsa, both made in house. We ordered a few different entrees. A burrito, tacos and nachos with margaritas. All the food was fresh and hot when it came out and drinks were good. Would love if they added a happy hour menu but we had a great time. Consistency and value. My wife, kids, and I are starting to frequent this restaurant, mostly due to the value and service consistently meeting expectations. We spend a lot of time eating out, and we like to try to bounce around from time to time. We recently tried Carreta's again after a few years, and honestly we have been pleased with the price point. Family of 4 consistently under $50 is rare, for us especially. Taco Tuesday hits the spot, super cheap, enjoyable for all ages. Nothing stands out, and I wouldn't tell family from out of town this is a must do, but certainly worth keeping in the Rolodex for family meal suggestions when nobody has a preference. read more

Had dinner at Carreta's last night in hopes of having a good meal on Cinco de Mayo and "taco Tuesday". We had been to Carreta's before and they had really good taco specials. No specials on Cinco de Mayo! I guess they thought they would be so busy for the holiday that they didn't need specials. On top of that, our margaritas were $17.99 and it was served in a styrofoam cup! We had two meals and one margarita each and the bill was $80. On top of that someone gave a little kid a whistle and he kept blowing it. So annoying. We really felt like they gouged us for the holiday. Not sure we will be returning. read more

Here's my complaint. This is the second time, check your receipts- Credit Card convenience Fees should be removed when cash is utilized as form of payment. This place does not remove the fee. And does not give change (broken down). You are forced to give way more in tip then deserved. I don't like being forced to tip a certain amount plus the convenience Fee.. I agree with the fee but learn not to be deceptive. It's being dishonest to me. 2 tacos doesn't warrant a $5 plus tip. And a CC fee when cash is being used. read more

I probably been here years ago, but before they moved to this spot. It's has a festive colorful decor. Happy vibes! Called for reservations and they literally had the table prepared before we arrived. The hostess was pleasant and the server wS really nice, smiled tge entire time. Checked on us throughout the entire time. It was 7 of us and she didn't miss a beat. The food was fresh and really tasty. The fresh seasoning was a plus. The food didn't take long at all. It was hot also, to say they served it all at the same time. Husband ordered the fried ice cream but canceled it and it still came out. They just let him keep it. The restaurant was clean. The restroom was so so, it needed a little attention, but it wasn't grossed out. I think that was the mgr that came to the table and she was really pleasant. Went to Carreta's for Cinco de Mayo celebration. There was a live band outside ( Superchargers) that was pretty awesome and there was a great atmosphere. The place was packed! Family friendly, wifi available, parking was a challenge due to the large crowd. I noticed only 2 Bartenders trying to serve a long line of customers. The wait time was approximately 30 minutes to get a cocktail. The Margarita with Patron tequila was awesome and worth the wait. I put my name on the list for a table and was told it would take about an hour to get seated. To me that was no biggie as they had that awesome band outside and I had a great Margarita in hand for the start of a great evening. After being notified by phone ( 1hr later) I was seated. The table was clean and the waitress was very friendly. As in many Mexican restaurants someone brought the usual free nachos and dip. I ordered the beef Chimichanga with refried beans and rice. Within 15 minutes of placing my order the food was brought to the table. After reading Carreta's reviews I was expecting a great or at least a good dinner. Well, they didn't live up to the great reviews today. Presentation was plain, the Chimichanga was soft (not deep fried crispy) and bland. The refried beans were watery and bland as well, however the rice was good. I didn't touch the sour cream or the guacamole that was served on a bed of lettuce. I know Carreta's was super busy with Cinco de Mayo and there was a long waiting list for seating but to me that is not an excuse for the disappointing meal I was served. Maybe they'll do better when it's not as busy. In the near future I'll try Carreta's again and post an update. read more

Carreta's... Before you came along there were only two other Mexican food places in The Dell to choose from to get my fix. One was Taco Hell and the other was a restaurant that I won't mention here because it effing SUCKS. Your margaritas are very large and a very large margarita equals a very happy Angie. I love your Chipotle Shrimp appetizer so much that I usually order two and eat that as my meal. I cheat on the chipotle shrimp occasionally with shredded beef chimichanga. I'm not proud of it but I do. Thank you, Carreta's for saving me from mediocre Mexican food. read more

I NEED TO SPEAK TO A MANAGER OR OWNER!! Please reply to this review. Miserable experience.!! Been coming here for 10 years almost once a week. Today there was a family with an unruly child making noise and inconveniencing the entire dining room. The family chose to do absolutely nothing. Our table among others was frustrated and it ruined our evening. Management didn't seem to care. We asked our waiter we asked the bartender for the manager and after about 10 minutes somebody finally appeared. He did not seem too concerned. I understand that the restaurant is very family friendly and that some noise is expected but this went on for over 30 minutes. There was at least four other tables that I spoke to who also made comments so this was not an isolated issue. Once we did speak to the manager at some point he did go try to talk to the family but seem to laugh it off and then I noticed that he was literally pointing to us letting them know that we were the ones that complained. Are you kidding me. That is about the most unprofessional act I have ever seen in a restaurant. If somebody complains then you walk over there and say we are having some complaints and cordially mention to them that it's related to their child into could they please do something about it. Again we've been coming for 10 years and at this point I don't know if we'll be returning. Two other tables I spoke to both said they're not planning on coming back anytime soon because of how inconsiderate this was. So basically you allowed one table of customers to affect a half dozen other tables and you have probably lost customers due to that. If you honestly don't care then that tells me what I need to know if not then you need to do a better job of treating your managers and understand how to professionally handle a situation like that read more

When my husband, son and I were in Slidell, my son wanted to try Carreta's because someone told him about the fried ice cream. We were immediately seated inside, as it was too cold to sit outside. The patio looked like a totally awesome place to hang out with friends and have a nice meal and a few adult beverages. I ordered the Enchiladas El Dueno, and my husband ordered some sort of enchilada and tamale combo, and I can't remember what Spencer ordered, but it was covered in cheese sauce and he loved it. He never made it to the fried ice cream. My enchiladas were delicious! My husband enjoyed his food as well. The next time we come through Slidell, we'll definitely stop in and eat here, especially if it's pretty enough that we can sit out on the patio. read more

My boyfriend got us take out from here, the Chile Rellenos was cold and hardly had any cheese in it. The taco salad I got was mostly shredded lettuce with giant chunks of tomato and some of the chicken pieces on it were not cooked all the way through. Not bad for Mexican in Slidell. We've come for lunch a few times and just went to dinner tonight (Friday night) and it was packed!! Almost no parking - but we were seated right away in the bar area. I had the Tacos Al Pastor which was pretty yummy - beware! The red "salsa" served on the side with the Tacos Al Pastor was SPICY!! But it was yummy! Had a virgin Peach Frozen Margarita was pretty good. Chips and Salsa are also good..can't stop eating those!! At dinner time, the food came out at a normal pace..but lunch..the food is LIGHTING fast!! (Makes you wonder if that stuff is pre-made??) Their margarita happy hour (2-for-one house rock Rita's) is KILLER. You only need two! The service wasn't amazing, but our poor server has 3-4 large groups and a few other small tables besides ours. My friends and I eat here pretty regularly. If we want dinner before a movie, we'll go here since the service and food is so quick. We don't have to worry about rushing to the movie. You get salsa and chips when you're seated and it's superb salsa! I always get the queso as well. Melted cheesy goodness! They've got a cute bar in the back if you're feeling like a margarita. I always get the same thing which is the enchiladas dinner but so far there have been no complaints from my friends about any of the entrees. Otherwise we probably wouldn't keep coming back. Mediocre Mexican food at a decent price. Generally bland with a lack of salt. Tamales come dry without sauce. Ground meat lacks any flavor. The chips had a stale and oily taste. The salsa was fair and spicy. Those that got the fajitas seemed to fair better but don't expect anything better than store-bought tortillas. The margaritas generally got good reviews but are expensive if you want good tequila. $16 for a large top shelf. I don't eat Mexican in Slidell often but this place wouldn't last a week in Houston. read more

First of all, the server (the "handsome" one with dark hair and facial hair w/ an accent) didn't even ask what we wanted to start out to drink. So when we ate the chips and salsa, AND he came and checkup up on us (the first and last he checked up on us), he still didn't offer us a drink until I asked for a drink menu. Secondly, when he took our drink order, he told us they couldn't make it cause of the event which was okay, but he offered me something else when he could've recommended something similar to what we wanted. The last part, we were there for 45 min waiting for A QUESADILLA, never got it. We physically saw 2 more couples come in after us with the same server and they got their food first. What irks me the most is that our server walked past our table multiple times and didn't check up on us after the first moment we sat down. He saw us, and just kept walking. Didn't bother to ask about our food that never came out. He finally came out with our food and put it in a to go box and the quesadilla wasn't even fresh anymore, that's when I knew it's been sitting out. We've never had such a bad serving experience in our lives. I've never written a bad yelp review ever but he's worth the bad one. Never coming back there again. Definitely the best Mexican restaurant I've been to in Slidell. It isn't authentic like some of the posters here mentioned, but that doesn't bother me as I like it on the Tex-mexy side. So you get free chips and salsa, which is a plus, and they're good quality as well. I ordered the steak fajitas, and my fiancé got the carnitas. The steak fajitas were the best I've had in a long time. The steak was not over cooked and was very tender, as well as perfectly seasoned. The carnitas were even more impressive. The pork melted in the mouth, and the flavor was unreal. As good as my fajitas go, I'm definitely getting the carnitas next time. The usual sides of beans, rice, and guacamole were good but nothing to write home about. With main dishes like that, though, who cares? We finished off with an order of tres leches cake, which was good as well. The only downside,really, to the visit was the tortillas. They were tiny and clearly weren't warmed on a hot pan (they didn't have that thin layer of crispy) so I found that a little disappointing. It's so easy to do good tortillas! My fiancé was disappointed a little as well because she is Mexican (just left El Paso with me a year ago) and she saw the yelp posts claiming authenticity... but no menudo, posole, chile colorado, gorditas, etc. Again, I don't hold that against them, as I'm fine with Tex-mex. So anyway, a little pricey compared with other Mexican restaurants, but certainly worth it. Definitely going back. Oh P.S. - great atmosphere, they have a fantastic patio. read more

Have been to this place many times over the past few years, going back to their previous location. With each subsequent visit, I feel the place has fallen a bit. My most recent visit was for my son's birthday. I ordered a burrito, my son had a chimichanga, and my wife ordered the vegetarian fajita and specifically asked for NO OIL on her veggies (she is a vegetarian and triathlete). The order came out FAST - too fast for my taste as there is no way that any of our food was fresh-prepped in the time it took for it to come out. My burrito was OK and my son had no complaints about his chimi. My wife's fajitas, however, were swimming in oil. We sent them back and asked for them to please be dry cooked with no oil. The second serving came back swimming in oil as well. My wife returned it and didn't eat. The waitress was courteous, pleasant and very apologetic about my wife's order. We found the atmosphere clean and bright. It was definitely not loud (no band playing) during our visit. I suspect, in the right weather, the outdoor seating would be quite nice. read more
