And distressingly, he didn't respond. At first I thought, "that can't be Paul," but a closer look revealed it was. Turned out maybe Paul was angry at us for being Michiganders. The challenger burger was massive, and it was tasty. It hit the spot like uncle Jerry does. The bottom bun was a little soggy from all the grease from the 1 pound burger, but it was still fantastic. I gobbled slobbered bobbled it up like my buddy Mia K does. Paul and his family seemed mad at us, so we looked away. Otherwise, I think the food was great, besides the fact that I accidentally put sugar instead of salt on my fries. The pickle chips are life changing. They look like chicken nuggets but taste like wock. Stuff is gas. Literally deisel, and not even on no Joe Bideski prices. The toppings were fresh and the mushroom swiss added the nice touch to the burger. The Chili Cheese Fries were just average though. Just regular fries with some chili and cheese topped over. I wouldn't get it again. The Service: Service was great! The staff were very friendly and welcoming when we arrived. And, our food got out to us in a timely manner! The Atmosphere: The restaurant was as expected. Spacious and had a timeless feel to the place. Definitely fit the old small town diner aesthetic. There's also plenty of seating available and parking is available on the side or on the street. Overall, a 5/5! For a small town, this local diner hit the spot for a quick lunch. I ordered my eggs over medium and they were cooked just right. I also had homefries (declined the gravy that was offered) and sausage patty with toast of my choice and a black coffee. The inside of the restaurant holds 7 extra-wide tables for 4 (but you could stick a 5th at the end, if needed. They also have 2 booths and one large round table seating 6 to 8 people and a small counter of maybe 3 or 4 stools. All and all, I'd definitely go back. Breakfast was good as was the service. The waitstaff was attentive and even offered to give me a coffee to go. I thought that was a nice touch and their prices are competitive. Please note: They do not accept credit or debit cards so be prepared to bring cash along with you. People were coordinating among themselves to determine the order of queue. Adding clearer signage or having a set host could help create a smoother experience for busy days. Honestly while waiting on my drink, I browsed the menu and already was ready to order by time they took our drinks. once that was taken, the food arrived within a reasonable timeframe. The restrooms were the biggest ick of our visit. They had single bathrooms with clear vacancy indicators on the doors with working locks. They were running low on toilet paper, dark, and there was a smell that was similar to a hot, sweaty gas station. On a positive note, plenty of parking with spaces both in front of the restaurant and in a larger lot on the side of the building. Signs to get to there were clear both on the highway exits and near the business. Overall, the experience was okay. I think we would come back for food and sit-down experience. Joe's is located near the Main St-College Ave intersection, next door to Hokie Hair (mind you, College Ave is no longer open to traffic, it's now a huge sidewalk). They are small and, since all the buildings along this portion of Main St are older, its interior is dark and dated. A makeover could be in order, but its old school look and feel lends itself to the friendly small town vibe I've become accustomed to in Blacksburg. This diner was nearly full, so we sat at the bar. There were three servers on the floor - all students. All three were friendly, helpful and loquacious (we talked about college in general, how to take advantage of a college's resources, and even discussed desired future outcomes of their educations - plenty of interesting topics for a chill Sunday morning). Neal had the t-bone steak and eggs, while I ordered a dish known as Joetaters (diced potatoes, cheddar jack, eggs, onions, peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms; and a choice of either bacon, ham, country ham, or sausage). Joetaters also came with a choice of white or wheat toast (or you can choose a biscuit for an extra $1.50). I chose wheat toast, and the entree was excellent. Neal ate his entire meal, so it's safe to say we enjoyed our food. Joe's is an excellent diner with awesome food and service. I can't wait to dine there again when I return. Thank you, Joe's Diner! JV
