Dr carney is sweet and knows what he is doing. His staff absolutely not. I had to call several times to get my referral there a month and half later I finally see him ... then his nurse never followed up for two-three weeks to schedule the surgery. Than I was instructed I'll get pre op paperwork and blood work and that did not happen .. followed up 3 times. Finally the day before surgery at 3 pm I finally get Bridget to get the bloodwork to lab. Come to surgery next day and almost had it cancelled because were op test did not get done because Bridget kept saying it's fine I'll follow up and never did!!!!! Than after surgery they tried to give me ibp when they knew I had a blood clotting issue and was not allowed to take per my pcp and oncologist! Than I leave the hospital to fly back to Maui... go to pharmacy and they put in a huge bottle of ibp and 2 days of pain meds for a 6 week recovery of a hysterectomy. I asked to talk to doctor and he sends in his assistant because he knew I was upset, this is completely unacceptable. I am leaving back home in tears and probably high blood pressure because of how this place operates. read more

For those of you who are researching on your doctors, please do a thorough research before just going in to believe everything the doctor says. Ask questions. You set the schedule. Don't make them do things you have questions about. If they get upset at you for asking questions, ask yourself why should they get mad? Also, if your appointment is at 9am and you are not seen, ask. They rank u based on your complaints. Those who question are seen faster. I don't recommend this doctor and his right hand assistant nurse (Joanne) I hope that you will also read all the reviews online to make your final decision. I wish you/your loved one well. It's hard experiencing cancer, but with the best care, the journey won't be as hard as one with bad care. This guy gets mad at questions and doesn't seem to care when you are in pain. I hope that my review will save someone and their family from any pain this guy and his staff can inflict on you. read more

Words to describe Dr. Carneys office & his receptionists -Inattentive -Disappointing -Unavailable -Dispassionate I had a surgery with Dr Carney and he has been one of the most absent doctors I have ever been a patient for. I was referred to him because he was the "Only Surgeon that could help me on island" So maybe its my fault for having the expectation that he would be helpful. Yes, he removed my 11 centimeter mass which I am so grateful for. However, the pre AND post operative experience has been severely subpar. At my initial consult they couldnt really answer any questions about my body due to lack of information about what was going on and was told that "they'd have a better idea after my ultrasound" and then put me in a consult room by myself had me sign a bunch of surgery consent forms without reviewing them with me and only instructed me on how to wash my body with chlorhexadine body wash before surgery. I was given no opportunity or appointment before surgery to ask questions. Dr Carney came in to say Hi and "I'll try my best to preserve your fertility" and not to be nervous, because he wasn't. No one forewarned me of the potential side effect that effects 75% of people post operatively. Which - how can you not warn someone about something that effects the majority??? So after surgery I started having severe chest pain and felt like I could hardly breath and I didn't even know to expect it. So instead I thought something was severely wrong with me. Only then did someone tell me that it is to be expected and should last between 24-48 hours. 48 hours went by and I'm still having severe lung pain - called the office and could only get ahold of his resident. (She was lovely by the way, and the most helpful out of everyone in the office) She said it was typical and "Probably not a blood clot" despite my mother suffering from blood clots and me having a blood clotting disorder. So I have good reason to be concerned about blood clots. A few more days go by, I am still having lung pain. I keep calling the office and no one answers my calls or messages. A week and a half goes by and I FINALLY get ahold of someone in the office. I told them I'm still having chest pain and I really want to speak to Dr Carney. She said I can't speak to him because he's on Maui - but she'll send him an email. I had also asked her to give me a work note and if she could please add on 3 more days off of work because at this point, I cant even walk across my house without feeling short of breath and in tons of pain, let alone attempt to go to work. She hit me with an attitude so bad that I swear those 3 days were coming directly out of her PTO. (By the way, I'm over 3 weeks post op and I STILL don't have my work note and I have asked for it 3 times) Anyway, even after she sent him an email about my chest pain that i've had for over a week and a half, no one called me back STILL. So I went to see my PCP, who also tried to get ahold of him and wasn't able to, so I eventually ended up going to the urgent care and the ER because of my elevated blood clotting levels. So now not only was I terrified for my health for 2 weeks, but i'm saddled with ER & Urgent care bills on top of surgical bills because no one would call me back to answer my questions and concerns. Two weeks alter, I am finally able to get ahold of Dr. Carney for my "recheck" appointment via telehealth. He sounded distracted, unimpressed, and unenthused by my call. He wasn't able to answer most of my questions specific to my case and told me "I dont know" to a lot of questions he should know the answer to. I am left feeling like I received such subpar care and communication because I am a "one and done" surgery that wont be a continuous stream of revenue for them since I don't have cancer. Never in my life have I had such an absent surgeon or doctor. I got better answers from google. Completely unacceptable. My health may not be as important to you, but I was genuinely terrified for my life and my surgeon couldn't even call me back. read more

I had cervical cancer about 14 years ago and then another cancer in the same area just after that. Dr. Carney did my hysterectomy then and I was cancer free for all that time. A couple of years ago I had a cancer in my left kidney. The doctor I had for that was the WORST! I just found out at the end of 2021 that I have cancer for the 4th time. I have met with Dr. Carney and will be having surgery to remove it (hopefully all of it) at the end of March. I am so glad that I have Dr. carney to help me again, like I told him, he is my go to cancer guy! read more

I would never make a bad comment about a Dr or his office but in this case I think I should. Don't get me wrong Dr Carney is good at what he does but I've had a few issues after my surgery and every time I called they would say "call your lupus dr" of "if it's that bad go to the ER" I ain't got ER money. Was so disappointed also today is Aug 19,2020 I was supposed to have a call from Dr Carney talk to me and check to see how I'm doing but NOTHING. I had a laparoscopic hysterectomy and it's sad every issue I've had I called my gynecologist because I guess Dr Carney is too busy or whatever the reason. I just thought when you have a surgical procedure that the surgeon is supposed to check on you make sure everything is healing but nope NOTHING. I even had a fever after surgery and they said "call your lupus dr" guess what it had nothing to do with my lupus but a bladder infection. read more

If Yelp had a big ZERO star rating option, that's what this office would receive. The customer service of one of the workers who goes by the name "Bridget" was extremely horrible. "Bridget" stated she worked for Dr. Carney for 13 years and knows exactly what his restrictions are, and I "shouldn't be in pain" a week after my D&C AND CYSTECTOMY surgery because "I ONLY had two 5mm incisions and they are not that big!" Then I finally talk to the assistant that handled my paperwork and I explained the situation with "Bridget," and she apologized and said that she "can be hard to work with." This office is located at the Kapiolani Cancer Center and they have an inconsiderate staff member dealing with patients that have cancer among other health issues. This is unacceptable! read more

I've heard so many good things about this doctor. However, I'm not sure with my experience so far. He seems very relaxed regarding my ovarian cancer which he says is aggressive. He told me that it's safe to be around my grandkids without telling me that my bodily fluids are dangerous for 48 hrs after treatment (we live in the same house and use the same bathroom which is a no no). After he did my surgery to remove my tumor he said everything went well. It wasnt until my follow up appt 3 weeks later that he mentioned he left part of the tumor on my colon and could not get to it. I have had two appt so far since starting chemo and both times I had to wait 45 min after my appt time. The receptionist doesnt even have the courtesy to tell you if hes running late. When I went up to check, she said she didnt know and I'd have to ask the other girls... what other girls!? There was nobody else there! I have now been waiting for an hour. The door is cracked open a little and I can hear him and some girls talk about free birth control?! Whatever his deal is, I just hope he knows what hes doing. read more

Stay clear of this doctor unless you are determined to be cut up. I went to him with a diagnosis of endometrial cancer, stage 1, type A. This is a very mild cancer that often recedes. I said that if I had the surgery I only wanted my uterus removed. He INSISTED I have surgery immediately and implored that I have my ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, and lymph nodes also cut out. WHAT? This is like telling a man with prostate cancer that he should have his balls cut off too. He proceeded to relate horror stories of women who died gruesome deaths because they didn't let him operate on them. He also had two interns in the room asking me intrusive questions about my sex life, how many sex partners I had in my lifetime etc I was a nearly 50 year old woman at the time in a long standing relationship and this has NOTHING to do with endometrial cancer! I went with another surgeon who agreed to only take out my uterus. Surprise, surprise, They found NO CANCER. Completely unnecessary surgery. BE WARNED. Carney is aptly named. A man who prefers carnage on the operating table. It's your body. Don't let any man tell you what to do with it, or have interns infer that you caused your own cancer. You are in a vulnerable position when you have had a cancer diagnosis. Shame on doctors who take advantage of this. read more

Dr. Carney is one of the greatest blessings the Honolulu medical community has to offer residents and is definitely one of the reasons I pulled through a Stage 4 Ovarian cancer diagnosis (I am BRCA 1). He is SMART, UP-BEAT, COMPETENT, ENCOURAGING and WELL-INFORMED on current clinical trials and cancer cure breakthroughs. I underwent a hysterectomy/debulking to get rid of the many malignant tumors growing inside me followed by six months of weekly chemo sessions. His steadfast belief in his ability to heal me - and in my own ability to overcome this disastrous diagnosis and get on with my life - encouraged me to believe in that possibility as well. I am still alive today, heading toward my 4th wonderful year of living post-cancer. I couldn't have asked for a better doctor to guide me back to good health. Dr. Carney and his wonderful staff and chemo team are ANGELS. No other word for it. Cancer is nothing to mess with. Use all the tools necessary to get past it.
