I hurt my knee last week and my husband scheduled an appointment for me to visit Island Orthopedics. It's valet only so unless you want to find street parking, be sure to bring $3 cash + a tip (because it's good karma). [[HIGHLIGHT]]The valet was so nice and we hobbled into the office building.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] It's such a nice facility and they even have a small children's play area with toys set-up which my toddler loved. We filled out a few forms and [[HIGHLIGHT]]Elijah brought me in to get x-rays done. I recently saws Dr. Edward Chan for excruciating pain in my finger, which doesn't sound earth shattering but it was SO painful, I couldn't do simple daily activities like opening a can of soda, using clothes pins. Dr. Chan was very thorough not only in his examination but also his explanation of treatment options. I got an injection in my finger, which hurt a TON (just like he said it would), but five days later, I am able to use my keyboard comfortably to leave this review. TL:DR - I had sharp pain in my left shoulder and went to two different doctors at their offices, Dr.Garber and Dr.Min. Dr.Garber wasn't very attentive to my injury and always rushed me. Dr.Min was a lot more understanding while still being a little bit rushy. After surfing and having an acute sharp pain in my left shoulder, I decided to go to see an orthopedist. My girlfriend had a hip injury a couple months before and had a good experience with Island Orthopaedics, so I decided to go to them too. I chose Dr.Garber since his bio mentioned that he also surfed. Upon meeting with the doctor, I tried to explain the circumstances of my injury, but he didn't really seemed interested in hearing about it. He did a very cursory diagnosis of my shoulder mobility and said I had shoulder winging. I wasn't even asked to remove my shirt to see if my scapulas were indeed winging. (At the time, I didn't know that my symptoms weren't even close to shoulder winging, but trusted his opinion.) I was prescribed some PT then rushed out of the office. I had waited about 45min before I could be seen by the doctor and the appointment barely lasted 15min. He didn't even look at the x-rays we took of my shoulder. After 3 weeks of physical therapy and not seeing any improvement I came back. I had the same experience once again, waited 45min, doctor's visit took about 15min. I tried to explain my circumstances and the lack of progress to Dr.Garber again, but he said it was still just shoulder winging. Before he rushed me out, I asked him if I could get an MRI to see if there were any other injuries and he agreed. Got the MRI and it showed that I had tearing in my supraspinatus tendon. This is much more serious of an injury than just shoulder winging. At this point, I was frustrated with the care I was receiving from Dr.Garber and went with the other shoulder specialist at the office Dr.Min. I had to wait about 30min, before being seen by Dr.Min. He pulled up my MRI and began explaining what I was looking at. This time around I came with all my questions prepared and he took the time to concisely answer each of them. I have a decent understanding of anatomy due to my line of work, and Dr.Min recognized this and talked to me straight about what muscles were injured and the type of recovery to expect. Dr.Min also did a diagnosis of my shoulder mobility and said I had no winging. This could have been due to the PT I was doing, or not having had it at all. I was then prescribed a steroid for my shoulder to decrease the inflammation in the bursa and surrounding muscles. Overall my experience with Dr.Min was much better and I felt my questions and needs having been met. I did feel slightly rushed by Dr.Min, but he slowed down once I pulled out my list of questions. read more

Dr Amy Perreira is absolutely incredible. The whole staff here is nothing short of professional, kind, and friendly. I wish I found them sooner before going to other orthopaedic places. I had gotten into a bit of a surf accident that week. Someone else's board caused a blunt force injury to my ulna/wrist, and I was afraid that it was fractured. After running around super stressed going to other urgent cares and incompetent doctors, I was blessed by the expertise of Island Orthopaedics. Upon walking in, I was greeted with the utmost kindness and courtesy. The lady checking you in AND the lady behind the phone were stellar human beings, and made me feel like I was part of the family. I only wish I got their names. Dr. Perreira herself makes you feel super listened to, and makes you feel very cared for. She was very quickly able to identify that my wrist was not fractured, but simply bruised. I asked her about the numbness going from my elbow to my fingers, and she said it was just my nerves being irritated. I asked her how long would it take to recover? And she said probably a month. She was right on the money with that. Though I started surfing again a week after, the strange sensations and weakness in my wrist did not go away until about a month later. Now, it feels fully recovered. I cannot recommend Amy and her staff more. They made me almost ~enjoy~ going to the doctors' haha! read more

From the very beginning of contacting his office to scheduling an appointment, as well as coming in to the office, every single staff member is very friendly, polite & accommodating. This review covers Dr. Wei Chin Chen and Dr. Lorrin Lee. I am both under their care. Dr. Lee fixed my knee and Dr. Chen fixed my wrist and femur. I can say their skills in the operating are great since I don't have any pain/complications post surgery. Follow up appointments were extremely quick and easy. Both of them took the time to show me and explain my x-rays every time. They also took the time to physically inspect me and answer any questions I had. I don't know if I was just lucky but I had many follow-ups with them and each appointment was quick and easy with all the care that I needed. read more

Dr Aimee is excellent. Not only is she a great doctor/surgeon but she is extremely caring, kind and just wonderful . Some of her office staff could take a lesson from her spirit of aloha. If you can just get past the poor attitude of some of them, I would highly recommend Dr Aimee. She is truly one of the best doctors I ever had the pleasure of being cared for. I broke my finger and had to have surgery. It was a bad break with long term issues. Dr Aimee was there for me the entire time and really knows what she is doing. Unfortunately I can only review the service we got when we called because it didn't get any further. I called for my father who was referred by the ER. When the lady answered the phone, I had to verify who I called since there was no identification upon answering. Although this seems petty, it set the tone for what was to come. Without too much details for privacy, it basically came down to the lady on the phone did not have any people skills and was almost robotic getting rude if I didn't answer exactly as she wanted without offering help. As a comparison, I called other offices where they were friendly and helped me with anything I couldn't provide right away offering my options. Needless to say, it sounded as if she didn't want to bother with a new patient so I looked elsewhere. It is possible that Dr Garber is brilliant in his field, but with a rude and unhelpful front office, he may never be able to display it. read more

Dr. Perreira is probably the best doctor I have ever had. She is kind, and honest, and does an amazing job of presenting every option. The scars from my hand surgeries are basically nonexistent, and my recovery for both was so fast! My only regret is that I waited as many years as I did to address my carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms. Preface: A few years ago, my mom fell and broke her wrist and fractured her hip. She was eventually admitted to Queens Hospital in town and had surgery performed by Dr. Lee, simply because he was the orthopedic surgeon on duty. My mom's feedback about him was that he was the only person in her entire stay that smiled and seemed happy. I got updates after the surgery at the hospital and went with her on her follow up visits and found that she was right, he has a super positive disposition and great bedside manners. I had developed a "trigger" thumb last year after years of having woodworking as a hobby. It got so bad, I finally went to see my regular doc. When he asked me if I had a preference for an ortho, I told him, Lorrin Lee! Dr. Lee gave my thumb a shot of steroids to see if it would reduce the swelling. It didn't. A week later, he gave me another shot to see if it would reduce the swelling. It didn't. To be fair, it's the insurance companies that require this process because they don't want to pay for surgery if a $5 shot will fix the problem. Since the shots didn't work, I was eligible for out patient surgery. Yay. Thankfully, the surgery was quick (they said it took 12 minutes) and painless. They actually had to put me under for the surgery which is one of the most bizarre things I have experienced. One minute, I'm taking to Dr. Lee and the nurse and the anesthesia doc, and the next minute, I'm waking up in the recovery room. The surgery went well and my thumb eventually healed up nicely. (It didn't heal overnight, because they have to cut some stuff in there.) You can't even see a scar where he cut into my hand. Throughout the process, Dr. Lee was always super positive, friendly and professional. I should mention that his office is in Queen's POB III and is pretty new and up to date. read more

Don't go here. Not worth my 2.5 weeks waiting for an appointment just to get told that the doctor wasn't in when I showed up. They said they called but didn't leave a message stating that. Who does that? So unprofessional and I have slight sympathy with covid times but then there was another man in the office with a very similar situation and I over heard him saying that they rescheduled him 3 times. Found this place online thru the Queen's referral line. I really was hesitant to try another doctor due to my past surgeries on the same body part without relief. I had put off my surgery for sometime Dr. Garber was still nice about having me as a patient. Originally, I had seen Dr. Kaneshige, but the work I required was not his specialty. Good to hear that they work together and not as one. Wouldn't want to have someone work on me that the particular surgery wasn't his best. So surgery has been done funny part is that the area that was worked on for the surgery is not the pain I am feeling during the recovery go figure. This would be a one star review if not for the nurses who were sweet. Had an appointment w/ Dr. Lee for a follow-up examination several weeks after the cast came off the arm. Got there, got sent downstairs for X-rays. After the X-rays, went back upstairs to wait an HOUR and 45 MINUTES just for Dr. Lee to pop his head in the exam room and spend all of 30 seconds saying the X-rays were fine. He didn't even look at or touch the arm, basically just asked if everything was ok, which could've easily been done over the phone, without me having to miss work. It seriously could not have been more obvious that he just wanted to bill my insurance for the appointment and X-rays. But that's the game in health care, I get it. Just that if I was a doctor I would've at least put on more of an act. The takeaways here: 1.) 2:15 appointment = left at 3:52. 2.) if an MD says they want to schedule a follow up appointment "just for [their] peace of mind" you probably don't need to go in, especially if everything feels fine. 3.) to save time, after X-rays are taken, ask if Dr. can just call you if there's something wrong. read more

Island Orthopaedics has two locations, which broadens their clientele base and can both be great and frustrating. However, I'm willing to commute to get great expertise so it doesn't matter! Their town location is in Queen's POB 1. I've met Dr. Alexander Garber and Dr. Aimee Perreira. They are both wonderful, warm, and helpful! Dr. Garber took the initial consultation and recommended me to his colleague, just in case. He specializes in sports orthopedics and admitted that my issue, an accident with my right thumb (my dominant hand), would be well-served by a hand specialist. He and his assistant, Aura, are amazing and lovely. Dr. Garber convinced Dr. Perreira to squeeze me in that same week I saw him despite being booked. She saw me and took extra x-rays. After consulting with her, we determined that we were not completely sure that surgery is required (versus recommended). Thus, we took an MRI. After doing so two days later, I saw her the following day (everything was bam, bam, bam) and she informed me I had a grade 3 tear (almost complete rupture) on my right ulnar collateral ligament in the thumb/hand. Greaaaat. This all came from a martial arts class but I was hoping it wasn't THAAAT serious. Oh well. So surgery was the heavy recommendation and I thought that I better do what the specialist recommends! Dr. Perreira is full of smiles and always makes time to answer my questions. Even my anxiety-filled ones I asked at the last appointment. Her assistant Brittany is always helpful in scheduling my next appointment. OMG! My dermatologist referred me to his friend who is a doctor at this office, but he wasn't working that day. I decided to stop by Island Orthopaedics Office to check it out so since I was in the building. The front office staff are super nice and very efficient. They were able to accommodate me that day. They referred me to Dr. Garber who is the shoulder and elbow specialist. I was then sent to the basement of the building to take X-rays, then returned back to the office. Approximately 15 minutes later, Dr. Garber informed me of my results and examined me, then he gave me a shot (auwee!). I was super lucky to get in to see Dr. Garber that day. I was in so much pain. I would definitely recommend others to Dr. Garber for shoulder and elbow injuries. read more

This review is for their hand surgeon Dr. Aimee Perreira. My two female dogs despise each other and unfortunately I got caught in the middle of one of their fights and suffered a very bad right ring finger injury. I'm right handed so this was a devastating injury and I rushed immediately to Queens ER. Dr. Perreira was consulted and she communicated with the ER physician once my xrays and splint was done. I was taken that day to the OR due to the extent of my injury, PIP fracture with all my tendons and cartilage destroyed. She explained to me the procedure, risks and expectations and as distraught as I was, put me at ease. Her bedside manner is nothing less than extraordinary as she presents with a calm and caring demeanor with the utmost priority of taking care of her patients. She admitted me for two days of Iv antibiotics since it was a dog bite to prevent serious complications such as osteomyelitis, a terrible infection that could result in amputation. Every single step of my Managment by Dr Perreira was thoughtful, deliberate and explained to me thoroughly so I knew what to expect. Her follow up visits and referrals to hand therapy have met and exceeded all my expectations, and is the most positive thing that has come out of a devastating and terrible injury. I am grateful for the care I have received from Dr Perreira and her staff and know that I am in the best hands.
