About 13 years ago, I started having pain, instability, and even locking of my knees during and after playing golf, hiking, running stair climbing exercises, and aerobics classes. At the time, I rarely saw my PCP more than once a year, but I gave in to making an appointment to get a referral with an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Jay Marumoto. After having X-rays and an MRI of my knees, it was determined that I had developed meniscus tears and was a candidate for bilateral arthroscopic meniscus repair. Before the surgery, Dr. Marumoto said he expected me to recover and return to my daily activities quickly because of my fitness level and age. So, I had meniscus repairs done on both knees at the same time while I was actively in the workforce and recovered quickly within several months. However, he also warned me that I'd probably have to return in about 15 years as he could see the beginnings of osteoarthritis and knee replacement could be in my future. Well, I returned within 15 years to Dr. Marumoto, who honestly told me that deciding when to have surgery is up to me. He didn't pressure me into having surgery, and luckily, my pain level is still very low, manageable through exercise, and I've been keeping up my fitness level for faster recovery. I can see myself having the more invasive knee replacement surgeries soon but have several upcoming trips planned up through mid-2025, so I chose to delay surgery and go through a series of physical therapy for further knee functional strengthening or "prehab" at JACO Rehab. I like Dr. Marumoto's candid approach and attention to detail. He identified the health issue(s) and explained effective treatments. He also described expected results and recovery but pointed out the possible risks, as with any surgery. Now, I wish I had followed my parents' advice about swimming for health benefits instead of focusing on land-based activities, which have exacerbated my knee joints' osteoarthritis. read more

As the saying goes "trust the process" and I for sure am trusting this process that I'm going through at the moment. I wanted to make sure I had the right Dr and nursing staff that is gonna be helping me through my surgery process before, during and after. I did my research and asked a lot of people who's a good orthopedic surgeon. Everyone and I mean everyone told me bout Dr Marumoto. No joke this guy did a lot of my friends surgeries along with my friends parents surgeries and even my coworkers. I was already wowed with everyone's answer. During my first visit he told me straight up by just looking at my MRI that if I don't fix this shoulder problem by doing surgery that it'll only get worse. He also said it's a free country and I don't need to get this surgery too. He may seem a bit forward and intimidating but he's straight to the point and I like how he didn't sugar coat anything. During my surgery appointment there was an incident that happened that they had to cancel my surgery appointment. I was like oh no I gotta wait another 2 weeks but the staff was nice to reschedule it the next day after they fixed the problem. One day wait no problem for me. The Dr and his staff had no control over the problem at the hospital for cancelling my surgery appt anyway. I would wait however long as long the surgery was to be successful. During my surgery process all the nurses and staff explained everything and answered all my questions professionally. Now the after surgery process. Rhealyn has been my best friend during the after surgery process. She been answering everything everytime I would call or leave a message. I would call everyday the first week and every other day the second week. Sorry Rhealyn I know I can be a handful lol. So I'm gonna end this review where if you need an orthopedic surgeon I advise you to do your research or ask around I'm sure someone's gonna mention Dr Marumoto. I searched long and hard to find the best ortho surgeon to perform a total knee replacement on me. Finally, I found Dr. Marumoto, and I could not be happier. His skills as a surgeon are second to none. In addition, the normally huge scar left on a kneecap from the surgery is almost completely invisible. He is friendly, answers all questions, and has a terrific rapport with his patients, including his hospital bedside manner. Yes - I've heard lots of things about this doctor... My neighbor told me stories... I've read the reviews - good and bad... My own primary physician raves about him! The guys at Physical Therapy said he's the best! My high school classmate is a patient and she's undergone several successful surgeries... My conclusion: I like honesty. Just tell me and I will deal with it. It may take a while for me to accept the truth, but eventually, with facts and common sense, I'll get there... I appreciate Dr. Marumoto's style. The options are presented in a straightforward manner. I was able to decide on my own which route to take several times. I understand that it's my responsibility to take part in my health care and I'm happy with the outcome! During this last visit, I was a "work-in", meaning that all appointments were full, but they would squeeze me in. My PCP referred me to Marumoto. That was the worst treatment I've ever received from a doctor. Although he is considered one of the best Orthopedic surgeons in Hawaii, he has horrible bedside manner and is very unpleasant! He made me feel incompetent during my one and only visit and even ridiculed me when I told him I have pain in my feet. Doctor is fine but the Administrator that picked up the phone and helping at doctor office is terrible. They are rude and not helpful. When I told them I changed my insurance company which is PPO and gave them all info, they didn't listen and still contacted the old insurance for my medication. So 3 weeks past I didn't get the medicine. When I called and found out that they contacted the wrong company, they got angry and not apologized anything and said they will contact my current insurance . I thought they wound contact the right company later but no. I kept calling them again but I gave up now . And Hey there is other good knee doctors in Honolulu too!!!. One of the worst experiences of a doctor's office visit ever. No one greeted us, not even a hi. Fake, ingenuine, forced smiles from the receptionist. We sat in the front office and waited for half an hour to be called. No one bothered to provide any instructions with paperwork or what to do with them once completed. When we inquired about the long wait, that was when she rudely directed us to the back waiting area. Once arrived to the back office, Rhealyn, one of the back office receptionists is also very rude. She raised her voice when talking to us, argued with a patient on the phone and slammed the phone in front of everyone. She spoke to us in an abrupt manner, when we shared with her that we have been waiting for over an hour. Her response was to remind us of our appointment time (which we adhered to) and that the doctor was running late. read more

Upon check in at the billing desk; being it was my first visit, no direction was given for me to proceed to the doctor's reception area until I asked the staff if I was waiting in the right area after 30 minutes. Doctor spent approximately 10---maybe15 minutes maximum with me; did not seem interested in understanding my history or explaining in a comprehensive way what my diagnosis meant.Not sure if he was just having a bad day, too busy or didn't care. Much of the information I obtained was due to my having to ask questions. No literature provided to learn more about the condition nor any did the dr. initiate any helpful guidance other than recommending PT. I want whoever reads this to look up a video on youtube and type "cleveland clinic if we could see inside other people's hearts." And put yourself into their shoe: weither you are a patient, staff, friend, family member, doctor, and or visitor. I work in medical field so I already knew what my expectations were with Dr. Jay Marumoto. Injured my right knee with a complete acl tear, meniscus tear, and bakers cyst. Furthermore,  I have gout too which added more pain to the injured knee. This happened back in January 2016. Dr Jay Marumoto did my anthroscopic knee surgery back March 4, 2016 and started Physical therapy on March 15, 2016 with JACO Rehab until August 04, 2016 Total of 21 weeks and after that I threw myself in a spartan sprint race that was held the week of August 14th. My knee was just nearly perfectly fine. Anyway, just have faith in Doctors. 2nd opinions are smart choice too, but in my case I had a case manager because this injury was work related. My case manager makes sure i understand everything from beginning to end with my surgery, dr visits, and many more. Most importantly the road to recovery. Dr. Muromoto did his part and also JACO , and what matters was me to listen to them or dont. The 1st month of PT I was really behind the guidelines of PT. I was really stiff, needed work on range of motion (ROM), couldn't even extend my knee to 70 degrees. So I pushed myself to the limits. Although I was scheduled 3x a week for 21 weeks, I continued to do PT exercises on non PT days. I was really afraid if i wasnt progressing, back to the surgery room and Dr would have my knee manipulated.  And believe or not, I know an individual went through this, I definitely didnt like the sound of pain he experienced.  So im going to say that Dr. Jay Marumoto is an awesome surgeon and hope this message finds you helpful and as well of the video. I did both knees one year apart and he was awesome. Easy to talk to and very pleasant. His assistant Micheal terrific. When people ask who did my knee replacement I will suggest Dr. Marumoto but I always suggest to do their research. My appointments are at the Waipio office but I did have a few at his main office. Please don't waste your time and see someone else! I injured my chest and was referred to Dr Marumoto. Scheduling an appoint was no problem, but what came next was something else. When I checked in, one of the assistants asked about my injury. I told her it was a chest injury. She goes, "Dr is a shoulder doc, and not a chest doc". I'm thinking "Why did you even accept me??" Oh, well... Off to see Dr Marumoto. I'm sitting in his office, and about 20 minutes past my appoint, he rushes in.. like super man, but w/ no cape. no knock, no appologies, no smile, nothing. He fumbles thru my charts, finds my name and demands to take my shirt off and do a few movements. I didn't have my elbows at the right angle, so he YELLS at me "LIFT YOUR ELBOWS UP!". wow, I have never been yelled at by a dr before. Then, my $200 worth of advice: "nope, you don't need surgery". He RUSHES out the door. No thank you, no taking time to answer any questions, no explaining his decision, nothing. This guy is so rude and extremely apathetic I left totally frustrated and more confused. I ran into a friend later who also seen Dr Marumoto and he had the SAME experience! Same complaint: rude, impatient, cocky... Think he had it worse than me. He even thought of suing... After my horrendous experience, I wanted a 2nd opinion, so I called Dr Marumoto's office for my MRI disk. They said they don't have it. WTF again. I left this disk with them during my first appointment. I told them this, and they said nope, YOU HAVE IT, and we didn't take it. I then remembered exactly where they put it.. I told the girl, "it's in the manila folder, across the reception desk in the drawer where you guys file all the patient records".. BINGO, 5 minutes, later... "ok, we have the MRI disc, you can come to pick it up". Not only is Dr Marumoto a tool, his staff is incompetent. Please don't waste your time w/ Dr Marumoto. Hopefully this saves some folks from the frustation I experienced with him. BTW, Dr Kan and Dr Smith in the same office are great! They are nothing like Dr Marumoto. I was referred to his office by a Doctor working at Kahala Urgent Care. He may be a good surgeon (?), but he is a lackluster people person. He does NOT emote caring about you what-so-ever! He wont even say hi to you when he walks in to the room, even if you greet him first. I know you're busy, but I'm a human person here! He barely looks you in the eye the entire duration of your visit. He was nice to me the first time I saw him, for two seconds as he wrongly guessed what my first name meant, then it was no more mr. nice guy. He could give a crap about you and what you're going through. He rushes around like the world is on fire, not taking any time to see that you're hurt, and concerned and worried about the outcome of your injury. His staff is snarky and apathetic and WILL lose your x-rays or MRI once you hand them over. They will take forever to get back to you, wont tell you what the update is, and just generally are unprofessional. (they did let me cry in their office when he told me to get surgery-I was scared!) He took almost no time to explain anything to me, and he was recommending surgery! He just shoved a paper at me with listed websites geared toward Doctors which are NOT lay-person friendly. If you're going to recommend cutting people open Dr., while it may not seem a big deal to YOU, remember, that there is a wounded, scared, unsure, and confused individual at the other end of your words and actions. Surgery doesn't always have to be the way. (I got a second opinion, which; at least HE recommended I go and get the second opinion, and the second doctor said no need to get surgery, explained everything to me, took time to show me what was going on, didn't speak to me like I was an imbecile, and actually took the time to listen to me)! I will say that he lets you judge when you're ready to return to work or whatnot, but they just DON'T seem to care about you. Dr. Marumoto is not for everybody but he is for me. Surgeons can be tersh and SEEM down right rude. That is Dr. Marumoto. I went in to have a frozen shoulder examined after physical therapy alone could get me no further. I had very a complete physical exam by his APRN. If you are living in the stone ages and think APRNs can't help you, then avoid this practice and work with a solo doctor who has time to BS with you. I personally think APRNs are great. He came and the APRN briefed him. Dr. Marumoto asked me some other probing health questions and did some more physical tests. When I asked about the pain and recovery, he told me it was a short 15 minute procedure under general anesthesia and I would have meds in case the post procedure pain was too much. When I asked about waiting and seeing if the problem could improve with more stretching exercises I could see he was getting tired of listening. A frozen shoulder is about the easiest procedure he has to work with. He was to the point. "Look, you've already done PT and told me that your shoulder still gives you problems and you can't function. 90% of the people do better after a shoulder manipulation and 10% don't. You can wait but why? I can fit you in this Friday and you'll be back driving to work on Monday. You'll need to do your physical therapy right after and keep doing it on your own or it will freeze up again. My desk can set you up." I left the office without another appointment, but decided that when I went home to make the appointment. His office waited for me a little after closing hours for paperwork. I was the last procedure of the day and my time was later than scheduled. Dr. Marumoto apologized for the delay. I was taken into the surgery room for my manipulation. IV anesthesia was given and the next thing I knew a nurse was offering me water and a snack. Shoulder was slightly achy, but I immediately noticed a greater range of motion. Dr. Marumoto's no nonsense style means that in the office visit, I was seen at the time scheduled. No long waiting like so many other offices. It also means he is blunt. I'm completely satisfied because he set my expectations and provided me with a positive result. If you need someone friendlier, check out the other doctors. I chose to have surgery and he proceeded to explain the techniques, the extent and the results that would benefit my lifestyle. I felt the utmost CONFIDENCE in him. If you are looking for an excellent ACL surgeon - choose Dr Jay M. Marumoto. My family and I had a superb experience with him and his staff, and I would like to share our experience and tips with you. History: Five years ago, my 16 year old son tore his ACL playing High School Football, his Orthopedic Surgeon at that time recommended a donor tissue replacement (cadaver) citing the recovery time and minimal cutting as its best benefits. The surgeon also recommended he not play football again unless he has NFL career plans. So after his ACL Reconstruction with Cadaver Tissue my son did not play High School Football again, but he did play other High School sports and stayed in great shape. A few months ago, my son tore the same ACL again playing basketball. After doing a lot of research recently on ACL Reconstruction, I realized that going with a cadaver was a mistake. Cadaver tissue is better suited for older people who are not as active. Search for a Surgeon: When I looked for an Orthopedic Surgeon to perform my son's second ACL surgery I received a lot of recommendations from family and friends which included Dr Marumoto. I chose him initially for his extensive experience. Another thing I heard and read was a lot of the orthopedic surgeons have zero bedside manners, are terse and for some reason they don't explain much. This was not the case with Dr Marumoto, he was very friendly and easy to talk with - he explained everything. Selection: Dr Marumoto would not give my son an appointment until he had received the MRI Report and the MRI Image CD, which I was absolutely happy about because some surgeons just use the MRI Report to perform surgery. The MRI Image CD allowed Dr Marumoto to view the MRI Report and compare it to the MRI Image CD, while doing so he discovered that my son also had a really bad meniscus tear. This discovery confirmed what I had suspected about my son's meniscus. Prior to seeing Dr Marumoto, my son had shared with me some symptoms that I thought were meniscus related (I've had meniscus repair done to both my knees) but no meniscus tear was recorded on my son's MRI Report. So now my son was having both his ACL and meniscus done at the same time - what a huge relief! Initial Consult: Our first appointment with Dr Marumoto involved the normal paperwork stuff, his Nurse Ms. Monconnel (who was very friendly, and very competent) did the initial screening (Blood pressure check, etc...), then an intern (she was good too) came in to evaluate my son, and then Dr Marumoto came in to do his evaluation. He was professional and extremely competent. He recommended using my son's patellar tendon, but would use my son's hamstring if he wanted. My son chose to use his hamstring. Dr Marumoto then explained to us what he was going to do during the surgery, and answered all of our questions. We left his office with a surgery date, a prescription for pain and nausea medication, and a positive feeling about our son's surgery. Surgery: My son's surgery was done in Dr Marumoto's office building (Hale Pawa'a), the large layout of the waiting area, surgery area, recovery area, and cleanliness and professionalism of the staff was the same as a hospital but with a more modern feel, so we had no issues with it not being a "hospital." His pre-surgery nurse and Anesthesiologist were great. After surgery, Dr Marumoto came in to the waiting room to let us know that our son was out of surgery, and that everything went fine - he explained everything that he did and answered our questions. In a couple hours my son went home. After Surgery: Four days after surgery, my son was back in Dr Marumoto's office for a follow-up appointment, wound check and cleaning, and he gave us a consult for Physical Therapy, which my son started the next day. Two weeks after his ACL Reconstruction with Hamstring, my son is off crutches and pain free, he still uses his brace. Tips: 1. If you are young and very active, don't use a cadaver for ACL replacement. 2. Be patient, as patellar tendon or hamstring tendon ACL replacement take longer to heal. 3. Be positive. 4. Prepare a list of questions to ask AND ask them. Don't assume anything. 5. While in the Recovery Room if a nurse tries to "push" you to go home, let her know if you think the patient is not ready, talk with the Head Nurse if you must - we stayed an hour more. 6. A nurse (not the Dr) bandages the wound after surgery, so check it before leaving. Ask about it if needed. Other: 1. Parking is either free or $1 with validation during office visits, and $3 with validation on the day of surgery. Bring cash for parking. I could not find an ATM in the building. 2. The office building has a small coffee/tea shop, and Long's Drugs Pharmacy on the first floor. Bottom Line: 5-Stars! Highly Recommended! read more

Marumoto did my shoulder surgery after being referred to him from my PT friend. The procedure went great on the shoulder and it's been 2 months since the surgery. Eventhough it was prescribed, I didnt even need pain pills after surgery. Marumoto also did knee surgery on one of the specialist doctors I see too. That doctor told me to tell Maurumotohe did a great job. From stories I hear is that doctors that were once on the top of their games, there is a time when their work goes down hill. Marumoto seems to be one that is still one of the best in his field. Do your research as the hospital wanted me to get surgery done by another doctor that did not have great reviews. Dr. Jay spends quality time with his patients. He is willing to answer all my questions and address my concerns without making me feel rushed or unimportant. I've seen Dr. Marumoto for a shoulder issue and an elbow problem. (He correctly disgnosed my shoulder issue after two other doctors misdiagnosed the problem). He recommended I wait on shoulder surgery and informed me of various options for my elbow problem. I followed his recommendation for my shoulder and decided to have the elbow surgery, The surgery went perfectly and is healing nicely. Dr. Marumoto is a consummate professional and an accomplished surgeon. Is he going to tell you a bunch of jokes during your visit and all?, no. He is going to tell you the truth, whether you'd rather hear it or not, and let you make the best informed decision for your particular problem. Also, the new office is state of the art in efficiency and aesthetics. On two recent visits I was seen 5 minutes early and within 5 minutes of the scheduled time for the second visit. I went to Dr. Marumoto about 1 1/2 years ago for a frozen shoulder. The doctor is very caring and explains everything in a manner you can understand. He walked me through all of the choices and let me decide which route to take. I ended up having a manipulation that didn't work and then surgery. I had 3 failed surgeries in Utah during 2013/2014. This was on my left shoulder. In 2015 I came to Hawaii to work at BYU-Hawaii. I went to Dr. Marumoto because I was in pain and he injdected the left shoulder with cortisone. Prior to this I had at least 10 shots and they all were done from the back and hurt like crazy. Dr. Marumoto has a different technique. He injected from the top and to my amazement, I didn't even feel the shot! It was like a miracle. Several months later my right shoulder started hurting. The MRI showed a torn rotator cuff and torn bicep tendon. Dr. Marumoto injected it, but the pain just got worse. The only option was surgery. On April 20, 2016, I had the repairs done. I have never met a better surgeon than Dr. Marumoto. After 4 months I needed the manipulation procedure, which was wonderful. Everything has healed perfectly. My care has been completely professional and competent; Dr. Marumoto is skilled and capable. Since, I have learned of other physicians who have gone to Dr. Marumoto for their surgery. On a personal note, Dr. Marumoto is funny and completely engaging. In December I'm headed back to Utah but if I ever need orthopedic work again I'm getting on a plane and coming back to Hawaii. First: I did read all the negative reviews here and felt that it's about time that someone who had a good experience writes it down as well, to counteract the negative bias (people who are happy often don't bother posting into forums or writing reviews.). I had a very bad shoulder problem, that I carried for too long, mostly because of a horrible experience with another doctor (Dr. Patrick Murray at Queens, If you value my advise then please don't see him.) My first visit with Dr. Marumoto was pleasant. He was friendly, said hi and shook the hand I offered. He is the careful, calm friendly type, not the outgoing one - and very professional. He was interested in my medical history and ordered the right kind of imaging and physical therapy to determine whether surgery was needed and decided later on, on hard facts, that I needed surgery. (Labrum torn of the bone, several labrum tears). The visits were always very efficient and not too long. Also, once he gets up, he is usually done with you and says things like: "I see you in a week". It is not too much of a good bye but I would not think it is unfriendly. The surgery went very well, he is indeed a good surgeon if I can believe some nurses that worked for a hospital a lifetime. My own shoulder turned up to be fully fixed and I almost have my full reach back and no pain only 3 months past surgery. His staff is mostly friendly, there is only one certain lady that is not too much. If you get her on the phone just try to overlook (or overhear) her sometimes rude manners. I don't think she realizes how rude she comes across. After a few visits, I could even manage with her.... and honestly, it is the doctor that I need to be good after all. So, to summarize: Did Jay Marumoto diagnosed my problem correctly? -- Yes, absolutely Was Jay Marumoto able to fix my problem with surgery? -- Yes, 100% Would I go back to him or recommend him to friends? -- Yes I would and I already did. read more

I am so grateful and impressed with this Doctor and his entire staff. I will not bore you with the details of all of my negative, exhausting recent medical experiences. This office and every step in it is beyond 5 star. Dr Mayumoto is a healer to the core. I cannot imagine anyone experiencing him as 'rude.'. I found him to be kind, attentive, connected and received immediate assistance. If you have a medical condition within his area of expertise - recommend him highly. He is the best. read more

I saw Dr. Marumoto for severe knee pain, that I didn't have a diagnosis for. I had Normal MRIs, x-rays, etc. Hoping he could help solve my problem. He told me I had a torn lateral meniscus. I have never had an experience with a Doctor like this before. He was incredibly rude to me. I was in tears when I left his office. I've never had someone whose job it was to help me, make me feel so awful. He was very condescending didn't seem to want to help me. Told me I could have surgery, but that probably won't help and to stop doing gymnastics, which I love with all my heart. He just kept saying over and over that "this is not a good thing to have" He said I should still try to get some exercise and not be a couch potato, because putting on weight won't be good for my knee either. He asked me questions that had nothing to do with me knee problem, like about my education. Then, insulted me on the fact that I have not attended college yet since I graduated high school 2 years ago. I spoke to another orthopedic surgeon who is head of orthopedic surgery for the Denver Broncos about my problem, and told him what Dr. Marumoto said, and he was baffled, almost appalled that he told me not to do anything about and to just deal with and stop doing gymnastics. I would not recommend anyone go to Dr. Marumoto, and I will never go to him again. If you want a Doctor with no compassion and thinks he's better than you then this is the Doctor for you. read more
