And after waiting in 2 lines and finally getting my number called he stopped me at the door and asked me what my business was.. I told him real ID. He told me to get my papers out and ready. I said my number was called I need to go in, he was so out of turn that by the time I answered his unnecessary questions they had called another number. No one likes going to the DMV its a given. Today I went in as a walk-in. I had a lot to do. I'm active duty residing in VA and I had to order a new DL and figure out what's going on with my registration. I mailed a check for both a replacement ID and registration renewal back in July 2 months ago. My check for the DL was voided and sent back saying I had to be there in person, despite being stationed out of state. The person also sent back the form for my change of address but my SMOG exemption form and check for registration were kept. When I went in person the young man helping me straightened all out. Put in the system to void the first check for registration, no fees and I paid and received stickers on the spot and my temporary license. Everyone was so nice and willing to put in the work to find me answers. I arrived by 730 with no appointment and left before 930. With everything taken care of license, registration and address update. This was the smoothest, most professional process I've had with the DMV and I wish the whole system could have it as much together as this branch. read more

I came back to DMV to see what my check hadn't cleared and am now told it takes 30+ days for items dropped in the "Express Box" to be processed. Not the 5 days shown on the box. The Carmichael field office is absolutely my go-to DMV spot. And one would think that because this office is in a fairly dense residential area that it would be packed, slow, and with lines running out the door. But this is not the case as I perceive. This is not to say that this office is not busy. On the contrary, whenever I visit it, there are a lot of people from the public in there needing transaction. But the experienced staff seem to be able to complete most typical transactions well within 20 minutes. I went there on a Friday at 1:15pm and had my "Read ID" update completed in under 60 minutes. And that is without an appointment! When you first enter the facility, you get in a line to discuss your issue with an adviser. He then assigns you a wait number that is specific to your case; in other words, an expert in what you are trying to transact. In my case, on that Friday, I had to interact with 6 different DMV employees in order to complete my transaction. And I can honestly say that all 6 of the employees were absolutely kind, courteous, knowledgeable, and helpful. And this has been true for all of the three various visits that I have had with this office. Even if I move a hundred miles away, I would probably still be tempted to drive back to the Carmichael DMV to conduct any related business. PS- Be aware if you are upgrading you drivers license that has a motorcycle endorsement to the new "Real ID" drivers license, that the DMV computer system is having a tricky time importing that data into your new Real ID. I have had both a normal drivers license and a motorcycle license since the 1980's. But in December of 2018 I went to the Carmichael DMV office and updated my old license to Real ID. The DMV clerk issued my temporary "Real ID" in paper form to me, but I failed to look over it thoroughly before I departed from her. I had looked closely enough, I would have noticed that my listed rating was only listed as "C", not "CM1" as it should have been. So after noticing this error a few weeks later, I returned to the DMV to fix it. I had to re-apply for the Real ID and get re-photographed. Not a humongous deal, but fairly inconvenient. But as I have written, the staff and the great organization that they have made the process quit painless. Ok, I'm done writing. :-) read more

If this were really a true Yelp review, I would be warning fellow Yelpers about its lack of cleanliness, the customers' lack of cleanliness, the interminable wait, lamenting the endless agony of waiting for my ticket #H14,432 to pop up on the screen. To give an idea of how long the wait was, I got my ticket and instead of a number, there was a picture of a clown laughing. And I swear I saw a dusty old skeleton in one of the chairs in the waiting area. I just passed my behind the wheel test today! (3rd try) Thanks Steve! He was a really laid back examiner. He did not give me a hard time at all. He wasn't rude like most of the others & very attentive. My first try: I got some dude always wearing shades that was probably new he was ok, but made me feel awkward because I seen him yelling at some girl before I took the test. Got too nervous I forgot to look back when I pulled over. 2nd time: The fuckin worst I got this lady named Melissa & she was a bitch. I accidentally made a mistake by cutting off another vehicle because she kept telling me to switch lanes like wtf. Then she started giving me an attitude the whole way back. I asked her what I needed to improve on & she didn't tell me. Unhelpful as fuck! She even over exaggerated on my paper saying I made some driver take abrasive action "UH YEA RIGHT" just mocking her. She even questioned me why I took the driving test the day right after I failed, with an attitude before I even started the car! Like bitch you act like people have all the time in the world! Imagine if your whole family was struggling and depending on you for a license. Be more professional. You know you didn't pass if they make you drive back to the DMV in a short amount of time. It at least takes about 12-20 minutes. read more

The Carmichael DMV is one of my least favorite places to go. I'd rather pluck my arm hairs out one by one than stand in line for hours to get a ticket to wait in line for several more hours. The wait is so bad they have one of those mobile carts outside, for god's sake. Anytime you need a brown bagged lunch to go to a business you KNOW that's a bad sign. And there's no way to weasel out of waiting. If you're smart and you try to make an appointment online you'll have a wait time of at least 2 months before they can get you in. That line snaking out to the street is sounding a little less bad, isn't it? I will say, though, that the staff, while clearly besieged on a daily basis by rude and offensive 'customers', does still manage to retain a shred of humanity and will sometimes even award you with a smile. If you really need to go to the DMV avoid this one at all costs and head for the one in Rocklin instead. read more

This is a living example of why CA government needs to be restructured. If we were allowed to register our cars in 2 year periods we could close half of the DMV facilities. When I was waiting for 2 hours to register my vehicle I looked around at all of the people that could have handled their transaction at home on the internet or better yet a DMV kiosk in the mall (free idea). The current system is broken and too costly. Look at all of the money we spend to manage this simple process. Oregon gets it. State owned SMOG facilities where you can do your registration at the same time. Plus the reg is good for 2 years. I've been trying to renew my drivers license for three weeks now. I've gone online, paid the fees but still am required to go in to the dmv office. I have not been able to get an appointment to go in. I've tried several times with the automated voice but get nowhere. I hang up, redial and say the next category of stupidity, still get nowhere. I called a 2pm and the automatic voice says they are closed and there is no one here. It's 2:00 o'clock for cryin out loud! I cannot get any answers from the website. I've paid, but am I not getting any notification, of any kind, NO. I have until the end of December but this is getting ridiculous! I needed to replace a lost drivers license. The soonest appointment was almost 2 months out for any location around. So I arrived Friday at 10:40am. The line was out the door and I waited 58 mins just to get inside. Once I got inside the line was an additional hour. So I waited 2 hours just to get a number. I was GG77 and they were on GG30. I went to get food and when I came back 30 mins later I was shocked that they were still on the same number. Apparently they went 2 hours without calling any GG numbers. My number was finally called at 4:50. Over 6 hours to get a license replaced! Insane! I knew the DMV was bad but I never thought it could be this bad. I would never go again without an appointment. If you NEED to go without an appointment, I'd try going around 4:30. When I left there was only about 10 people in line (rather than 100+ when I got there). They close the doors at 5:00 but as long as you're inside, they'll still see you. They really need to offer more services online or hire more people or something. It should not take this long for something so simple. read more

As far as the wait period and getting done with what was needed in a timely matter. It was amazing. However, I am very disappointed with the staff. I was with my teenage daughter who needed to get an ID correction for the 2nd time due to name and gender mess ups by staff. As we were in line getting ready to go in, one of the staff members asked what we were there for, and as soon as I started explaining it was for my minor childs ID corrections, he proceeded to look at her and with his snide rude comments ask her if she knew how to speak english. Brushed off and let it go. Then once we got inside to the window to get her corrections, the lady was extremely rude as I had never even said a single word, and rudely told me that my assistance was not needed and I needed to go sit down. Except my assistance was needed as my child had no clue what she needed to do. I get that this COVID thing is stressful and that precautions need to be put into place which I'm sure there is a lot of pressure on the staff, but there is never the need for snide comments and complete rudeness which me just writing this doesn't even begin to express just how rude these individuals were. I'm very disappointed. I rather have had to deal with longer wait time over the disrespect. read more

Avoid this branch at all costs! Go to the Rocklin one instead. Doesn't matter if you scheduled an appointment online. All it does is let you skip to the front of the line faster, then they'll give you a number, which after then you will still have to wait at least ten million years until you're served. The last time I went, I had to take a whole day off work. Got there at 8, and a few minutes after sitting down, something went wrong. The employees did not have the courtesy to let any of us know what was going on. Business just stopped. Numbers weren't being called and employees just sat there and chatted amongst themselves. Not one apology or explanation like computers were down and they'd be back up shortly. Nothing. I sat there for a half hour until I stood up, said "fck this shit" loudly, and walked out. Went to the Rocklin branch where I waited for half an hour and was serviced in under a minute. Seriously. This Carmichael DMV is NOT worth your time. If I have to miss a day of work and not earn money so I can re-register my vehicle (which cost me $110 btw), then this government is fuxked. ---- UPDATE: I came in last week to transfer a vehicle title. The young man who served us, while impressively wearing a lanyard adorned with Star Wars memorabilia, was too busy tinkering with his cellphone to pay 100% attention to us. He was texting under the table and snuck glances behind him, watching his co-workers. I'm sorry, but if us customers would like to speed things up. No wonder DMV is slow. read more

I am sitting here thinking of all the hours I have wasted in this place. DMV in it's entirety is a pain in the ass. Several years ago when I moved I updated my mailing address, since then I have had to come sit in line for hours on 4 different occasions because my 3 cars and drivers license were not sent to my new address. All 4 times took about two hours each, time I could have been doing something productive like sleeping or eating. The staff here has almost always been very helpful and if you are nice, you may elicit a laugh or a smile :) But there are exceptions to this as well when the woman operating the camera didn't say she was taking a picture. Just a sudden flash as I turned to face the camera and then she said next. WTF is that about... :( I was going to give them 2 stars, but I wrote the rough draft before i had my picture taken. I'm so impressed with this DMV. I came for a real ID and license renewal. Arrived right on time for my appointment at 9:50 am and was out of there by 10:35. The wait to be seen was about half an hour but was fine since I had my phone to pass time and they now have this system that notifies u when it's almost your turn. You could easily sit in your car and wait as it is to sit in the waiting area. While I was waiting, I witnessed several interactions between people and the workers. The workers were mostly all friendly and tried to be helpful as much as they could. When it was my turn, I had all my documents ready and the only thing for me to do was to verify the info on the touchscreen at the window (ooh, California u fancy now) and pay the fee. From the check in line to getting my picture taken, everyone was nice and everything went smoothly and efficiently. Definitely come here if u need to be at the DMV. read more

Although the wait is always long, it's to be expected. This location is very close to my residence making it very convenient. Each visit has been great including my most recent one with my daughter who's preparing to get her license. Reese A Morgan was not only knowledgeable but professional and his demeanor displayed that he took his job very seriously. I appreciate the time he took to thoroughly explain everything of what's happening now and also what to expect. Thank you Rees for such great customer service! I'd also like to commend everyone else who I watched provide service too. The woman who checked us in (first point of contact in the line at the entrance), the woman who took driver license pictures (she was VERY interactive with customers making them laugh), and the guy at the front counter ( the counter at the entrance). I had made an appointment to update my drivers license to a real ID, and followed the directions on line for what I needed to bring. They were clear. I also filled out the online application, which wasn't as clear. But when I got to the office the two staff members I talked with were helpful, kind, and fun to work with, and explained what wasn't clear. I was early for my appointment, so had to wait for two people in front of me, but that was to be expected. This office does not deserve the lower ratings. read more

This has been by far the most frustrating experience I've had in my life. I arrived at 10 am to get the real ID with my new married name. I got my number (G147) and I was told to get in line to get my documents checked. I brought my Social, birth certificate, marriage certificate, mortgage statement and vehicle registration. The lady I spoke with said my proof of residency had to show my married name. She could accept the social since it was mailed with my married name but I would need another proof of residency. She suggested I fill out a form the change my vehicle registration to my married name. I take the form, fill it out, and get back in line to make sure the documents were filled out correctly. The next man I talk to says I can't change my registration to my new name without having the pink slip. I don't carry the pink slip (obviously) so I can't change my registration. He tells me I can go to the bank and get a printed bank statement. While there, I miss my number being called of course. I probably would have made it if I hadn't gone through the whole registration ordeal. So I get back in the document changing line. A new lady is helping me. She tells me the bank statement would work and asks if I'm also doing something with my registration so I tell her the story of my morning. She then tells me I could have used my original documents for residency (mortgage and registration) because I have my marriage certificate with me, proving my name change. It's 12 pm as I write this and my number is now G214. They are serving G169. This is my third number. I would have been in and out in about an hour if the people helping me had known the correct information. Who knows if the information I have now will even work? It'll be at least another hour before I know. Ok, so I was able to change my name and get the Real ID FOUR HOURS LATER. The person with all the misinformation is Annalisa. If you get her, just immediately ask for a supervisor. I will be filing a formal complaint, and I spoke with the supervisor. Everyone else was great. Annalisa needs better training or she needs to leave. read more

This review is for the Carmichael Branch. I have visited this location more than a few times. My previous visits (2015-2016) warranted a one star. My recent visits last year and 3-times, this year have been exceptional. The typical complaints some have about DMV in general may still apply here; long waits, frustration, and now, the COVID, guidelines and restrictions, etc.... yeah, this does exist here also. However, it is what I have experienced, what I've seen and yes, my overall instincts and feelings that prompted me to write this long review. Overall, this DMV and it's staff is awesome. The staff has the ability to work quickly under pressure, even though if you just watch how things unfold, the myriad personalities of customers and staff, the paperwork that must be absolutely accurate or it's their behinds, then you can see some of the frustration from the staff as well as the customers. Regardless, all of these staffers are human beings, they are trying, they are working their behinds off, they are working to maintain some degree of professionalism. They also have families, they are also tired but they keep working, they are also possibly being exposed to any number of customers that may be asymptomatic or actually sick, yet the staff keeps it moving. They really should be appreciated more than they are. When I look at the whole picture, the frustration of long lines that I may experience is not a personal attack against me, it's really how their system is set up The fact is that the DMV, as a whole needs a major face lift and more funds. This has nothing to do with the staff. I am not writing this review to dismiss anyone's personal one star review or experience. I am saying, imo, these staffer's work incredibly hard with an awesome Manager named Marie, overseeing it all. A special thank you to Amy, a staffer also named Marie, and a gentlemen (name escapes me). Thank you all! Keep up the great work, I know it's a real challenge. read more

People were actually very nice! It's just difficult bc of all the procedures and so many people. Please learn from my mistakes if you are ever in my situation in CA. My car is a '94 Honda Accord - so the procedure may differ depending on what your car is. I was in an accident, and my car was totaled. I settled with the insurance and bought back my car. Here is what you need to do for DMV in CA: -Go to get your brake and light certificate- can get them at a any smog shop, call first to make sure they do it before you go. -If you had your car smogged within 90 days, you don't need another smog and bring your smog results with you to DMV. If it has been longer than 90 days, you will need to get your car smogged again. -If you can get your vehicle VIN verification form completed by someone other than DMV you can save yourself some time. If not, you can get it done while at DMV before your appointment. **You only have 10 days to complete this whole list, so start with those top 3 since they are the most time consuming.** Other things to bring to DMV: -Complete the application to register your vehicle and application for a salvage certificate. *While filling it out, complete the car information for when you originally got the car (date, cost, etc) but the car's value will be how much you bought it back from the insurance for. And enter the odometer reading on the form when you get to the DMV. -Sign the title, and fill out the owner information on the back. -Bring tools to remove your back AND front license plates once at DMV. Bring these with you to your appointment, they will take them and issue you new ones. -Make an appointment!! You can make one online on the DMV under online services. Your appt would be for registration regarding 1 item. GOOD LUCK, AND REMEMBER PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE!!! ;) read more
