Bought a Mercedes for 35K and took it to my mechanic for a check up. He found that the rear rotors were heavily rusted, there were deep cuts in the tire treads of the front left tire (like someone cut it with a razor, you could peel back the treads), and the windshield wipers were leaving streaks on the windshield. I scheduled an appointment to have CarMax tighten things up because their "125 point inspection" apparently does cover rotors, tires, or wiper blades. Of course this process took longer than the 10 day return window and I was just told that rust on rotors is normal, the gashes on the tires aren't deep enough to expose the wires, so we will not be addressing them. We did find that the wiper blades were worn so they were replaced and your vehicle is ready for pickup. GET YOUR CAR CHECKED BY A MECHANIC BEFORE YOU BUY!!! IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW MUCH YOU SPEND, THEY WILL NICKLE AND DIME YOU. read more

Called ahead of time and was pre approved for 2.49% financing. I made the mistake of telling the sales rep that I desperately needed the car to get to work the next day. The rep told me that they couldn't honor it and had to run the numbers again. They stuck me with 12.49%. I feel so foolish for shopping at CarMax and in hindsight I should have simply walked out and risked missing my first day on the job out of college. I am extremely disappointed with CarMax Potomac Mills and their misleading MaxCare warranty. I was sold on the idea that MaxCare would offer peace of mind and comprehensive protection, but when I actually needed to use it, I found out it does NOT cover OEM parts -- only cheap aftermarket ones. To make matters worse, I had to pay out-of-pocket for the difference in parts and labor charges because the shop wouldn't install inferior parts. So not only did I pay extra for a warranty, but I also ended up paying for the repair like I had no warranty at all. At no point during the sales process was this limitation clearly explained. If I had known that MaxCare doesn't fully cover OEM-quality repairs, I never would have purchased it. This experience has completely shattered my trust in CarMax's sales and service practices. I expected more transparency and customer care from a company with such a big name. I will not be buying another car here again, and I would caution anyone considering MaxCare to read the fine print very carefully -- or better yet, skip it altogether. read more

Quite a few bad reviews about this location but my experience was pretty good. I had a vehicle shipped to this location and it was ready by the time I arrived for my appointment. Gabriel, my sales person was professional and friendly. He answered all the questions I had and nothing felt sketchy or hidden. Bought the car same day and the only issue I had so far was the blower motor going bad and service department immediately ordered me a new one. I purchased a Kia Telluride in January 2025, and took the car for an independent full diagnostic service that week. The dealership discovered the car was missing the front right passenger axle boot, and had a jerry-rigged hose clamp in its place. I placed around 10 phone calls to the Midlothian service center during business hours but they didn't answer. To reach the service department I had to contact the sales side and ask to be transferred. This was my experience every time I called-- I never reached the service center directly. Eventually, after getting in contact with a Midlothian Service representative, I was told that service could not be completed or scheduled within the 10 day return period. As a result, I returned the car because: 1) the Midlothian CarMax Service center failed to detect the missing axle boot upon its 125 point initial inspection 2) the Midlothian CarMax Service center never answered the phone directly and 3) the Midlothian CarMax lacked the availability to solve the problem inside the return window of time Midlothian Carmax opted not to reimburse me the independent inspection amount. They make you use their unresponsive and unavailable service center for all issues. However, I would not trust a service department that had already failed me in multiple capacities: technical (failed to detect issue), communication (never answered my calls), and availability (could do nothing during the initial 10 days). I recommend you purchase cars elsewhere. read more

The rep isn't following up and he only works in the evening and we have been held at his mercy the entire time. OMG!....these guys exceeded every expectation. Was selling my car...got their online appraisal (which was far better than anywhere else and more than I expected). Here's how it works: You make an appointment online. When you arrive, they check out the car to make sure the appraisal was accurate (it was...absolutely no bait and switch), you sit down with a lovely, friendly person (shout out to Tracy) who walks you through a short stack of paperwork, and they hand you a check! No fees involved if you're just selling your car. And...wait for it...they give you a free Lyft ride home. Unbelievable. Additional pleasant surprise...every employee encountered was knowledgeable, pleasant, and helpful. I wish I could've seen this reviews before and had read all these terrible experiences people have had. I feel so sorry for them and my parents who recently bought a car from the place. They have received horrible and unprofessional business with Carmax ever since then. My dad who is a mechanic had gone to test drive it and had noticed something off on the brakes. The salesman's wrote him a letter and gave him a number where he would call to make an appointment. Throughout the next day my dad called numerous times to schedule a time but he did not receive an answers until days later. He finally was able to agree on date and brought the car in. Terrible unprofessional place on the business side that I recommend you avoid. I test drove a car I was interested in. The test drive itself was fine, albeit short. I admittedly came in close to closing but the car was not ready and I had to wait a while for the salesperson to go retrieve it. After the test drive the salesperson said he'd reach out to me the next day as I was interested in the 24 hour test drive, and he was going to get me a full list of features. Then...nothing. I reached out to the salesman and no response. Complete ghost. I filled out a survey online about my experience and someone else reached out and left a message. When I returned their call they did not pick up, and their work voicemail was not even set up. In summary - if your research shows the price is right, go at a time and date when you're ready to buy if you like the test drive. Otherwise don't bother. This is probably the worst CarMax I've experienced. Got here after submitting all my documents online to essentially sign my papers and be on my way. Unfortunately, this process was dragged on over 5 hours. Their systems were down and instead of communicating that with me they simply stated it would be about twenty minutes every twenty minutes for five hours. The only reason i stayed was because the credit check was already ran and this was the car I wanted. The service team moves extremely slow and are rude when asked about times or just an explanation as to what the delay is. 1. SALESMAN: We purchased an IS250-2013. My car salesman Mr. Jeff was awesome. He was simply straight forward and wasn't pushy in purchasing at all. I appreciated his customer service. He ensured everything was correct, and completed in a timely manner. 2. BUSINESS SERVICE: The people working in that office were nice over the phone, but never returned my call. I am an out of state resident, so my tags had to be mailed and shipped. You only get 30 days on the new tags. Well, the business office took 12 days to process my paperwork. I contacted Jeff, my sales guy to get some advice in order to get my tags in time. So, he spoke to a few people and made arrangements for me to come and pick up my paperwork. Since I loss 12 days, I had to overnight my paperwork to Florida to ensure there were not any issues. I received my tags with 4 days left to spare! The business office was not fun to work with. 3. SERVICE DEPARTMENT: The car I purchased had a tire issue on the left side. When I test drove, I told Jeff my concern and he pass the message on to the service guys. Well, they finally worked on what they thought was wrong after ordering the wrong part. This delayed me picking up the car for about 2 weeks. Once it was finished, the car still road the exact same. Noise still in the driver side tire. So, I took it to Lexus and paid for a full service check. Took it back to CarMax and told them to look over everything AGAIN because the noise isn't gone. They told me Lexus was trying to upscale me. I had to inform them, that though that may be true, I own a Lexus already and know my cars. So they took another look, and said it was the brakes. They fixed the brakes but guess what? Car still making the same exact noise. Taking it back this week and now I have to really push the issue because the car is STILL making that noise. They do not want to fix the things on the list provided by Lexus and keep giving me the run around. This is ridiculous. Not a good experience with this department at all. 5 stars for the customer service on the sales side! 2 star for the customer service in the business office. 1 star for the customer service in the service department. Do I recommend? If you get a good service rep that cares, sure but be prepared for a long drawn out process. read more

I purchased a Porsche sub and noticed the lane change assist/blind spot monitor was not working. I was told to take to Porsche dealer and they would reimburse as I had just purchased car. I did this and took receipt to them and was told it would be 7-10 days for reimbursement. three phone calls later and 1 month has passed and no reimbursement. just promises they would find out where check is and call me back which no one ever does. Warranty Nightmare!!!! Almost 40 days in this loaner. I purchased a 2019 BMW from Carmax in September 2023 and 4 months later coolant is leaking everywhere ( Haven't even made it to my 1st oil change yet) So I take it to Carmax and let them know the issue and without even checking the car out they tell me to take it to BMW. I get to BMW and let them know what's going on and that I Purchased a warranty from Carmax and the said no problem. (Bella Diaz) Told me to call the warranty company to see if it's covered and I did just that. Warranty company let me know that parts and labor were covered and to have BMW send over the Paperwork. I let BMW know and weeks go by with no response. so I called maybe 20 times, left messages BMW but no one returned my calls so I drove back up to BMW of Alexandria and talked to the service adviser (Bella Diaz) and she told me that the warranty will only cover part of the labor hours and I would have to foot the bill for the rest after telling me that it was fully covered and ill only have to pay my deductible. Also let me know that they need there loner back for "Paying Customers" I went a step further by asking to speak to the service manager but was directed to the service director (Steve Ong) and he stated that I had the loaner to long and would have to bring it back and pick my car up. I talked to the GM (Omar Stwodah) I didn't understand why how it was my fault for having the loaner too long and they had my car and didn't communicate with me until I asked to speak to the service manager. of the dealership and he was no help at all. when I let hime know how the customer service was he said I stand behind my "Service Department" I said no problem! And told him I would just come get my car and drop there loaner off. Horrible Mis communication, poor customer service, if I could give this dealership "0" stars I definitely would with out a question. They would call me every few days to bring the loaner to the dealership to inspect it, but won't return my calls concerning the service I'm getting on my car. iv'e been in this Loaner for almost 40 days now, the loaner is to small (BMW 330) compared to my BMW X3. I can't fit my equipment in the loaner so I'm losing money with my business I have. Iv'e been humble the whole time. BMW Group was no help neither when I let them know how the customer service was, they also said " We stand behind the service department" I was and through the whole process and tried to communicate effectively. I've bought and sold a few cars from CarMax and this location is probably the worst that I've been to. First the facility is tiny and squashed on to way too small a lot with way too small a parking lot. What that translates into is a mad process of parking and getting in and out of the lot for test drives. No where to park your car, no where to park the test driven car when you return. I came in to test drive two cars and there was a lack of customer service attitude. It was more like being at the DMV. I had to drive a hour to go here b/c it had two cars I wanted to comparison shop but would definitely avoid buying a car from this location. I've more recently bought certified cars from dealers and bought cars online and CarMax is convenient but definitely lacking in the experience. read more

CarMax ghosted me when I asked about items on the CarFax report... 2/17/23 - DAMAGE REPORTED 4/21/23 - UPPER CONTROL ARMS REPLACED ...not seen on the CARMAX Experian report for a 2012 Audi A4 Wagon. They were initially enthusiastic about contacting me via text, so I sent my query back to all of those text numbers, two of which appeared to work, and one of which definitely was originally from a human (who had said I should contact Samson at his direct number, w/o giving me that phone number, but that was before I found the car history discrepancies). I am fine with buying a car that has been damaged and/or recently had major repairs, as long as I am told so I can repair/maintain appropriately. This lie of omission is not helpful, and makes me wonder what other lies of omission CARMAX might indulge in. There is certainly the lie of omission in the TV adverts that show customers scrolling and ordering and getting it delivered to their doorstep like a pizza. In the real world, the financing steps alone make it more complicated than that, but more importantly if one lives in VA and wants to buy a car in any other State, even MD, then the buy button does not work. Rather, one has to transfer the car to one's State to get it delivered. Which is fine, but simply not explained, so wasted my time figuring it out on my own. And the lie of omission that customers need to add the CARMAX $400 fee to the price shown, which would be fine if that did not spoof price comparison tools by hiding that $400 rider specific to CARMAX, making a Good Price look like a Great Price for example. One would think that on their site they would list their price, but they don't. read more

We normally visit the Sterling location but the wife really had her heart set on a particular make/model. It's fun to scan the internet checking on each location's inventory but eventually you have to test drive and actually touch the car. We had no intention of driving out with a car but we did. Our entire visit, test drive and financials took approximately 2 hours. This included walking around for about an hour. We had 3 models in mind and we wanted to sit and drive each model. My entire review is based on excellent service by Bill Smith. His service sold us. He explained and educated us in one night versus the weeks of useless visits at the Sterling location. We asked the man standing there if they had any Jeeps. He pointed outside and said "4th row from the back". So we walk all the way to the end of the lot, find a Jeep I like. I walk all the way back to the office. It is 8:22. I asked another man if we could see the Jeep and test drive it. He said it was too late to test drive it. I asked if I could drive it in the parking lot. He said that wasn't possible. He said everyone's busy in their offices. I asked if we could unlock and look inside. Guess what...no. It took a little longer to get my car but only because once it arrived at the CarMax Potomac Mills location great care was taken to thoroughly check out every little detail. The 2012 Toyota RAV4 Limited V6 was just beautiful when I picked it up. Jeff was the salesman I worked with. He was at all times very helpful, patient, and courteous. You have 30 days to return the car for a full refund, plus 90 days to have any issues serviced at no charge. I did take my car in for servicing a few weeks later and was very impressed with the entire staff in the Service Dept at the Potomac Mills location. Still under warranty so the service was free, they did replace the battery. Both Katy, who I spoke with on the phone, and Carla who was in the Service Dept the day I brought my car in, were at all times very friendly and helpful. Carla took the time to go over my requests providing detailed explanations that more than satisfied my questions. The Carmax location is close enough to stores and restaurants that I was able to make the most of a beautiful day while waiting for my car to be serviced. I was more than satisfied with the results. I do not remember the name of the gentleman who serviced the car, but I would like to thank him also for doing a great job. If Carmax were not such a long drive from my house I would always bring my car to Carmax for servicing. A very impressive staff. I will only buy my cars at CarMax from now on. I gave them a thumbs down because my salesman@the Potomac Mills, VA branch kept wandering off for long periods of time. If he had other customers, I DONT CARE I WAS TGERE BEFORE TGEM READY TO GO!! I sat there unnecessarily for hours and hours. Then when I was there buying my newsed 2020 Riverside Blue Camaro (3.5k like barely broken in) on 4/9/21, I was offered 6.9%...with a 787 fico???? Hell no. So I asked my salesman if he could fax the buyers order the fax # to my loan officer he went to the back...then came out and said..UNBELIEVABLY: we don't have a fax machine. You know, I was willing to let the finance guy get 1 point...but that kind of dirty dealing had me get back in my old car and sit in traffic for 35 mins to go 5 miles each way...and my loan officer at my bank hot the whole deal done in 25 mins. Cut Carhax a check....and I got it for 2.45%. 6.9% my a#$!!! So, loan officer tried to call my bluff when I wasn't bluffing, and I had a long talk with the salesman about the meaning of a handshake and your word being a bond. He clearly misunderstood that conversations meaning. It's your only a man if you don't lie to my face. I totally busted him at checkout when I asked the lady (my salesman was right behind me) "Miss what is that "oh its a scanner". "It looks like a tiny fax machine" Lady: "Oh we have two of them". They are not being totally honest with the way they evaluate cars. I had a used car I got an online appraisal for on the carmax website. I brought the car in for an in person sale, with my online offer in hand: And they then "reappraised" it in person and offered me 30% less than the online appraisal offer. The condition of the car was exactly as described on the online appraisal. Even their own, in person appraisal, written by their own employee, had the same condition of the car as what was submitted on the online appraisal system. Despite all that, somehow they offered me 30% less? There was no difference in condition of the car and no difference in condition description even on their own appraisal sheet. It means they offer you a higher price online to try to get you in the door. Or; It could also mean they know some people might be desperate to sell a car, so they will offer significantly less in person to try to take advantage of that. They probably know that someone who took the time and effort to come in person, is more serious of a seller than someone simply getting it appraised online. I would be curious to see what happened with other people who had a car appraised online and then brought it in for an in person sale. I think it definitely falls under false advertising or dishonest behavior if they have done this with multiple customers. It is something that warrants reporting to the BBB, FTC, and state attorney general. read more

This location is the worst, I've been calling the business office since noon to get an extension on a loaner vehicle after the car that I got from them had the check engine light to come on. My loaner time expired at 6pm on today, and I needed help. The service department informed me last week that the transmission was slipping. With my car being purchased within 90 days it was still under warranty, and I did purchase the Carmax care. I drove 40 minutes here, one business office associate said that they can only switch out loaners it can't be extended, Kevin asked for my paperwork and wrote over the initial date of expiration for the loaner, the business offices assistant manager Kevin to speak to me with a passive aggressive tone and told me that they were busy today and they were 5hrs behind. I spoke to multiple customer service representatives on the phone and they escalated the issue to their managers but to no avail prior to my arrival in person. She put $4000 down on her car, was promised by Marty that they would make good on the sale, would credit her $2500 on another car and give her the option to select another car of equal value less $1000, Marty told us to return on Sunday, of course he didn't show up but instead passed us off to Brian; who then proceeded to calculate numbers that continually were reduced until she ended up with no car and only $1400 refunded. Second, the vehicle I purchased did not have an option on it that Evander said it did. I will be returning the vehicle as i do have that option. It has wasted a lot of mine & my husbands time which we will never get back. I do NOT recommend Carnax. read more
