Due to a family member's relocation, I had one more car than I needed. To get an idea of the extra car's value, I entered the details in Edmunds for an estimate. Edmunds came up with a value, and presented 3 offers to buy based on what I entered. Carmax was the highest offer by a couple thousand dollars, which was big for an under $10,000 vehicle. It was actually only a few hundred dollars below the Edmunds retail price of the car. So I was prepared to sell them my car, although I had serious doubts about actually receiving the quoted amount. I showed up and Gene greeted me to help me with my sale. He reviewed my quote and said he needed to take some photos of the car and a quick test drive. When Gene returned, he said there were no variances from Edmunds so they will pay the quoted amount. About an hour after I arrived I left with a check. Gene was an amazing representative too. No pressure, didn't ask me about buying a car. Just quickly helped me sell my car. I wish I had more cars to sell them :) read more

The process started off smooth at first. I ordered my vehicle and requested updates once it arrived. I got my first update when the vehicle shipped. So about 3 to 4 days later I checked the process through the app and it had arrived, yet no one had contacted me. 2 days later i called the location and was told they were waiting on the title. Two more days passed and I was told This Friday but most likely Saturday. I called on Friday and speak to 5 different people who all said different things, but none of them said my title was available. Finally I had enough, I called to cancel the transfer which meant I would lose the 200 plus I paid to have the car shipped. The young lady grabs a manager because now it looks like my car isn't even on the lot but at another CarMax. I was told they would call me back in 20 minutes. That call never happened. Had car delivered from Florida to Scottsdale Arizona, scheduled exact pickup a week after arrival as I am 2 hours away and have a broken arm, arrived on time to a dirty card and Bluetooth doesn't work, so I get sent away in a cheap loaner car and have to drive 2 hours back to get the car that I was scheduled to receive. No estimate on how long it will take to complete the basic repair. As I've already invested $2K for delivery from Florida and they will not refund I have no options. Not sure why these things wouldn't have been checked before having me come. Very disappointing to drive 2 hours each way to get a car that's obviously not ready for me. Instead of paying for a local mechanic to fix, etc CarMax problem being completely handed to customer with no resolve except that they will now properly prepare car and have me drive a total of 8 hours to receive my new car. Setup all the financing over phone and confirmed all docs and payment methods. Called before coming to specifically confirmed everything. Arrived and told I needed more docs and payment method not accepted (got past both of them but CarMax obviously not prepared even after I did everything possible to prepare for a seamless process). Received receipt for my $8K down payment printed on an "Appraisal Offer" form. Paid more with CarMax as I figured I would avoid issues but instead I've now been in dealership for 2.5 hours and counting to not leave with my new car after setting everything up beforehand in much detail. Come on CarMax. Your customers deserve a LOT better!! read more

Upon arrival they do not have any record of my online offer or appointment. They proceeded to tell me it will be 25 to 30 minutes to work and offer up in person. All of the stats of the vehicle remain the same mileage has remain the same, and the offer came back nearly $10,000 less. What a giant waste of time in the middle of my Saturday. SELLERS TO CARMAX BEWARE I have sold to CarMax in the past and the whole experience was positive and appraisal values have been consistent with Consumer Reports, KBB and AutoTrader. More simply put; accurate and fair. Today that changed. Staff was pleasant and professional and store was clean. I had no problem making an appointment and driving 111 miles for an appraisal that historically has been fair/accurate. I was looking foreword to a similar past experience. All seemed to going well as in past experiences until I got the "appraisal price." The offer was approximately $5000 below the lowest researched value for the car I brought in. The team member asked "are we close to what you researched?" My response was " are you kidding me, that is $5,000 less than the value of the car!" His response was "Well you have to understand CARMAX as a company is not selling many cars under the circumstances so we cannot offer you the full value of the car..." I told him that if that was the case CARMAX should make that statement on its website and inform potential customers of their new appraisal equation. This would show "proactive transparency" and would put CARMAX in a better light. Then I drove back home 111 miles along with my wife in her car. I was so confident in the old CarMax process, I had my wife follow me the 111 miles in our other car. Disappointing is an understatement. Note to CARMAX; the optics of this new appraisal approach looks as if you are preying of people that might need to sell their car during this virus crisis. Your new approach is tarnishing your established brand. It is completely understandable that any business would be done struggling under the National virus crisis, but don't offer extreme low ball prices that are NOT commensurate with the company's past mission. Be transparent. If the company cannot make a fair offer, don't make one at all. It gives the impression you are either trolling for suckers or trying to take advantage of people who may need to sell their car during these hard times. Please inform other potential customers before they make the effort to visit. read more

My husband and I purchased a truck from you on March 31, 2022 and was told on that purchase call that the truck had never been smoked and were told we would have it by April 14, 2022. Then we received a notice that we would have it by April 24, 2022. The truck originated at the Bakersfield, CA office and was shipped to the Scottsdale, AZ office and received there on April 5, 2022-at least that is what we were told. On Saturday, April 9, 2022, my husband and went in to the Scottsdale office to look at the truck. The staff, that day, was very nice and allowed us to look at the truck even though it had not been cleared for us to test drive it yet. To our dismay, when we opened the door to the inside of the truck, it smelled heavily of cigarette smoke-like it had been smoked in for a very long and actually had just been smoked in. The young lady that showed us the truck was just as shocked as we were. She immediately went inside and the management refunded the delivery fee to us. We did not ask for it. The just did it, which is fine. We then discussed how important it was that the inside of the truck be detailed with emphasis placed on getting the smell of cigarette smoke out of the truck as best as possible. On Tuesday, April 12, 2022, I called the Scottsdale office and it was confirmed that a third party detailer came and detailed the inside of the truck. By the April 14, 2022, we still had not heard from them regarding scheduling an appointment to come in and pick up the truck. After several phone calls, asking why it was taking so long to get a call to make an appointment I phoned the Scottsdale office on Thursday, April 14, 2022 and was told by a man (I cannot remember his name) who said that "the title was being processed". No explanation to me as to what that meant. This was confusing to me since the truck had been at the Scottsdale office for approximately a week and a half at that point. Therefore, I called the following day, Friday, April 15, 2022 and I spoke with Dexter who said he was on a manager. He said it was the first he had heard of a problem with the title and setting up for an appointment to come and get the truck we order. Dexter said he would reach out to upper management and call me the following Monday, April 18, 2022 and give me an update. I never received a call. I then called Customer Service on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 and they transferred me over to the escalations department where I spoke with a Pierre. Pierre asked me via the phone call and via email to contact him 48 hours after I spoke with him if I had not gotten a call from him or an email with him with some resolution, which was Thursday, April 21, 2022. I did not get a call or an email from Pierre 48 hours after the intial contact with him, so I called and spoke with someone in escalations again where she told me they had to request a duplicate title from the State of California. She said it will be a minimum of 30 days to two months before we MAY get to pick up our truck. When I asked specifically why there was a problem-she had no answer. I asked her if we could pick up the truck and get temporary plates/registration and she said she had to put in an inquiry to see if that could happen or not and that I needed to wait another 48 hours for a response to that. TODAY, April 22, 2022, we still have no truck; no understanding as to what the problem actually is with the title. We want and need this truck. It fits the specifications we need. This is the first experience we have had and as you can imagine, it has not been a good one. We are willing to be patient but would appreciate some honesty about what is really going on and hope it can be resolved but we have NO faith in them at this point. DO NOT TRUST THEM!! read more
