I had a very disappointing experience with the CarMax Scottsdale location after purchasing a 2018 BMW M240xi. Almost immediately after purchasing the vehicle, I noticed the RPMs dropping at idle. I wanted to have the car inspected as soon as possible, so I contacted CarMax to schedule a service appointment. Unfortunately, the earliest appointment available at the Scottsdale service center was August 10, which was after my 10-day return window. I was told I could drive to the West Valley location, but that wasn't a reasonable option for me. Because I didn't want to risk missing the return deadline, I paid $195 out of pocket to have the car inspected by an independent shop. The inspection came back with two full pages of issues, and the mechanic advised me that the vehicle would likely require thousands of dollars in repairs and recommended that I return it. I also spent about $20 on Uber rides to drop off and pick up the vehicle for the inspection. When I returned the car, I felt like I was being encouraged to exchange it rather than receive a refund. Since I needed another vehicle, I requested that my refund check be expedited. To CarMax's credit, they did reimburse me for the gas I had just put into the vehicle and for replacing the dead key fob batteries, and they ultimately expedited my refund check. However, when I requested reimbursement for the $195 diagnostic fee and my transportation costs--which I only incurred because I couldn't get a timely CarMax service appointment--I was told to contact the store manager. I emailed him the diagnostic report and receipts that same day. When the manager called me, he initially listened to the situation, but the conversation became dismissive. He told me the issues listed on the inspection were not major and that CarMax would not reimburse my diagnostic because I chose to use an independent shop. I explained that I did so only because the earliest available appointment at the Scottsdale service center was after my return period. I then contacted CarMax Corporate. The representative I spoke with was professional, opened a case, and told me someone would follow up within 24 hours regarding both expediting my refund and reviewing my reimbursement request. No one contacted me. After following up myself, I was eventually told that the reimbursement request would not be approved and that these matters were handled by the store, despite the store having already denied my request. I appreciate that CarMax honored the return, reimbursed my gas and key fob battery costs, and expedited my refund check. However, I don't believe customers should have to absorb diagnostic and transportation expenses that become necessary because they cannot obtain a service appointment before the return deadline. I hope CarMax reviews how situations like this are handled in the future. Better communication, more timely service availability, and a more customer-focused approach would have made this experience much different. read more

Ashley, who we dealt with, never mentioned that the car we wanted would be buying would be sold if we didn't sign paperwork immediately! Instead, we got a text that the car had been released. Due to a family member's relocation, I had one more car than I needed. To get an idea of the extra car's value, I entered the details in Edmunds for an estimate. Edmunds came up with a value, and presented 3 offers to buy based on what I entered. Carmax was the highest offer by a couple thousand dollars, which was big for an under $10,000 vehicle. It was actually only a few hundred dollars below the Edmunds retail price of the car. So I was prepared to sell them my car, although I had serious doubts about actually receiving the quoted amount. I showed up and Gene greeted me to help me with my sale. He reviewed my quote and said he needed to take some photos of the car and a quick test drive. When Gene returned, he said there were no variances from Edmunds so they will pay the quoted amount. About an hour after I arrived I left with a check. Gene was an amazing representative too. The process started off smooth at first. I ordered my vehicle and requested updates once it arrived. I got my first update when the vehicle shipped. So about 3 to 4 days later I checked the process through the app and it had arrived, yet no one had contacted me. 2 days later i called the location and was told they were waiting on the title. Two more days passed and I was told This Friday but most likely Saturday. I called on Friday and speak to 5 different people who all said different things, but none of them said my title was available. No estimate on how long it will take to complete the basic repair. As I've already invested $2K for delivery from Florida and they will not refund I have no options. Instead of paying for a local mechanic to fix, etc CarMax problem being completely handed to customer with no resolve except that they will now properly prepare car and have me drive a total of 8 hours to receive my new car. Setup all the financing over phone and confirmed all docs and payment methods. Called before coming to specifically confirmed everything. Arrived and told I needed more docs and payment method not accepted (got past both of them but CarMax obviously not prepared even after I did everything possible to prepare for a seamless process). Received receipt for my $8K down payment printed on an "Appraisal Offer" form. Paid more with CarMax as I figured I would avoid issues but instead I've now been in dealership for 2.5 hours and counting to not leave with my new car after setting everything up beforehand in much detail. SELLERS TO CARMAX BEWARE I have sold to CarMax in the past and the whole experience was positive and appraisal values have been consistent with Consumer Reports, KBB and AutoTrader. More simply put; accurate and fair. Today that changed. Staff was pleasant and professional and store was clean. I had no problem making an appointment and driving 111 miles for an appraisal that historically has been fair/accurate. I was looking foreword to a similar past experience. All seemed to going well as in past experiences until I got the "appraisal price." The offer was approximately $5000 below the lowest researched value for the car I brought in. The team member asked "are we close to what you researched?" My response was " are you kidding me, that is $5,000 less than the value of the car!" His response was "Well you have to understand CARMAX as a company is not selling many cars under the circumstances so we cannot offer you the full value of the car..." I told him that if that was the case CARMAX should make that statement on its website and inform potential customers of their new appraisal equation. This would show "proactive transparency" and would put CARMAX in a better light. Then I drove back home 111 miles along with my wife in her car. I was so confident in the old CarMax process, I had my wife follow me the 111 miles in our other car. Disappointing is an understatement. Note to CARMAX; the optics of this new appraisal approach looks as if you are preying of people that might need to sell their car during this virus crisis. Your new approach is tarnishing your established brand. It is completely understandable that any business would be done struggling under the National virus crisis, but don't offer extreme low ball prices that are NOT commensurate with the company's past mission. Be transparent. If the company cannot make a fair offer, don't make one at all. It gives the impression you are either trolling for suckers or trying to take advantage of people who may need to sell their car during these hard times.
