They have terrible service at the Wild Wood location--overworked and understaffed, and who can wait 2-3 weeks for an appoint? Who wants to when you only bought the car a few months back? Better buy the expensive warranty (which they are happy to finance & likely get 50% of the money to boot!), bc buying used from them could be dicey. It wasn't always that way. I've purchased two cars from here, both through Noel Rodriguez. Noel made the process very simple and no pressure - I never felt pressured to say yes to anything. In both cases the cars were in excellent condition, both were only 3-4 years old and even underneath were very new looking. We did the test drive and purchase in under 2 hours - many other dealers (including some prestige brands) it takes 4 hours or more, and they make you feel like you've been negotiating to keep your left kidney. Christina walked me through the process and even followed up with me a few days later to see if I had planned to accept their offer. We sold two cars to Carmax to purchase one. We started the process at the Glenwood location and our salesman was knowledgeable, helpful and thorough. However, the car that we originally looked at worked out to be too expensive, so we found a slightly less expensive car at the Wild Wood Forest location that we wanted to look at. We noticed that many of the cars on the lot were dirty and figured Carmax must detail them when they've been sold since the doors are open for people to look at them and may wait until they are purchased to clean them. We arrived at the Wild Wood location after the Glenwood salesman called over and checked on the vehicle for us. All of our information had been entered for credit and contact info at the Glenwood location, and the Wild Wood Forest location was told we were coming and the status of our application and transaction. We arrived at about 8 pm, and we spent the first hour having to answer all the questions we did at the other location as they re-entered everything in the computer - before we even saw the car we wanted to look at. We couldn't figure out why everything was re-entered when it had already been put in the system. At after 9, we went out on the lot to find the car but were unable to. Around 15-20 minutes later, it was found in the back where it had been put on hold when the original salesman called over. By this point, it's of course very late, very dark and we are exhausted. We test drove the car and agreed to purchase with the understanding we had 5 days for returning it. We saw a few cosmetic scratches that were concerning to us on the driver door and inside the driver and passenger doors where someone had apparently used a metal object to try to open the doors. It was also FILTHY. There was evidence of a spilled drink on the door for the backseat, and it had clearly not been detailed or washed/waxed. Carmax agreed to fix the paint with the condition that if we didn't like it afterward, the car could be returned. We did not finish the paperwork/transaction until after 12 midnight. This was again puzzling since we had everything entered in the system 2 times that day prior to agreeing to buy the car. We agreed to bring it back on a Tuesday (the purchase was on Friday), and leave the car for the day. When we went to pick up the car Tuesday evening, the scratches on the door hadn't been touched and the scratches inside had been poorly touched up with paint, but not sanded or painted properly. The brake pedal issue that we discovered after leaving Friday night required a part that had to be ordered. When we pointed out that they hadn't touched the scratches on the door, they asked the car be dropped off again on Thursday night and left all day on Friday, which we reluctantly agreed to. When we dropped it off, we needed a loaner and we were told they couldn't "guarantee" the 5 day return policy would be honored since it was now going over the 5 day period, even though it was not our fault in any way it was going over the 5 day period. The car was not returned to us until Monday. When my husband went to get it back, the paint looked good, and the brake pedal had been repaired, but it had still not been cleaned, and there was a new paint mark on the side door where it looked like another car door may have hit it. When he pointed out it had still not been cleaned they asked him to wait 20 minutes and only cleaned the very specific examples of spots my husband showed, not the spots and drip marks from the spilled drink right next to what was pointed out. It was returned to him again, and he told them to forget it when they offered to keep it yet again to clean it. We were offered a $25 coupon to cover an oil change as compensation. Everyone we worked with was very friendly and courteous, but several people didn't seem to know the answers to questions we asked and often had to ask someone else. We are happy with the vehicle we purchased and the price was fair. The quality of the work (or communication, we aren't sure where the problem lies) with the service department leaves a lot be desired, and we are frustrated that of the 10 days we have owned the car, we have only had possession of it for 5 due to their not completing work as they said they would in the time they said they would. read more

This was our first purchase and experience with CarMax. We did find that there is no haggling on the price and be expected to put out some money after the purchase to bring things up to snuff. We bought a 2015 Buick Enclave that is beautiful. That being said the tires were at the point of needing to be replaced and the rear rotors had ground lines in them from the squealers on brake pads run too low. Also, we had a long scratch (not very noticeable) along the lines in one door. Our visit with CarMax to discuss these was that these issues are taken into consideration on the pricing and that was why it was a good deal. They tried to fix the scratch, but were unsuccessful. I picked up a set of Michelin Defender tires for just over 1k, had the brakes done (in desperate need) all the way around and had two rotors installed. This in total would have been around 1k as well, but I did the work myself and saved about 7-8 hundred. All in all I am satisfied with the vehicle. It is beautiful, runs very nice, decent price (I did find the vehicle cheaper in Car Gurus and a few other places, but I valued the overall CarMax appeal. I would shop there again, but my eyes have been opened and will do a bit more due diligence before picking out the vehicle I want to ensure I'm not out a few thousand after the purchase price. One Salesman was good and the other was a bit pushy, but nice. Neither seemed to be up on the details of the vehicle, but then you are looking at possibly hundreds of different makes in the parking lot and being familiar with them all would take some studying. Third potential car from Carmax after I swore I would never go back, but it's like Walmart. Huge selection and that's about all you can say. The last car I got I love, but I had to all but force them to keep their word on the things they would fix. Needless to say it took a lot of leg work, multiple trips and a ton of flying off the handle(maybe it's a gender thing). Anyways. I have already spent 2 hours driving back and forth in 2 days and about 4 hours test driving, appraising and not haggling to be disappointed. The car that I was going to buy wasn't even supposed to be in their inventory. So much for third times a charm. The service team is terrible. Had my car serviced there 5-6 times. The service tech doesn't pick up when you call and you have to make an appointment weeks in advance for a simple oil change. Eventually traded in my car and bought an Acura RDX from a reputable dealer. read more

Do NOT purchase a vehicle from them. I purchased a vehicle in October of 2018 I took it back to get it checked out because it would sparatically stall out. They kept it 3 days claiming they couldn't find anything wrong. So I just delt with it for the past year and a half bc I dont drive much, then it started stalling more and more so I eventually got the money to get it checked out. They're saying it's multiple problems with the fuel system which all together will cost me $1,000 when I know they could have found that problem when I initially brought it back to them. I LOVE CarMax!!!! Best auto buying experience ever! I started hunting for a new car to replace my beloved 2010 Acura MDX. I simply needed a more reliable car since mine had north of 100k miles. I went to a few dealerships and left feeling like I was bothering them to buy a car. I walked into CarMax and was immediately in the good hands of their staff. I had an appraisal completed on my trade-in within 20 minutes and had already found a number of viable contenders on the lot. After drooling over many beauties, I decided my loyalties were still with Acura, so I settled on a more youthful version of my MDX. CarMax shipped one in from another location and a few days later, with maybe an hour worth of processing, I drove her off the lot. But.... then, sadly, our first date was a complete crash and burn. No offense car, but it's you, not me... It just wasn't as comfortable as my previous horse and you lost me with the location of the seat heater buttons (thoughtful details, people, come on!). Don't even get me started with Idle Stop feature. Seriously? Every time you turn on the car you have to deactivate it?? That is so not nice. so... I returned it. Yup, I Zapposed or Amazon Primed that sucker all the way back to the lot from which it came. The return took forever, like all of 15 or 20 minutes. I am not kidding. One piece of paper to sign and a check in hand. Stunned. Zero pushback, zero hassle. They want you to be happy! I searched for other cars and found a Lexus and an Infiniti QX60, both in other locations. CarMax brought both cars to my location. I test drove them both and drum roll please...... I bought the Infiniti QX60. I am madly, deeply, head over heels in love with this car. My car buying experience: 12 cars from a variety of dealers. I worked with CarMax for approx. 2 months to find the perfect truck. My sales agent was always professional and made the experience a pleasure. The truck an options combination I was looking for was rare; but with CarMax's vast an ever changing selection; we were able to find one in Colorado and have it shipped to NC. My only recommendation for improvement would be the remote walk-around they do before having the vehicle shipped. I asked 3 very specific questions with direct answers; unfortunately these answers did not turn out to be accurate (missed by the remote representative walk-around). Once the vehicle arrived; my sales team did the best they could to make it right. I'm sure I could have walked away (did this on a previous transfer vehicle) from the vehicle and waited longer but their effort/customer service sold me on this truck. Financing/Paperwork were a breeze and they offered many different options. I would recommend CarMax to future buyers and will be sure to work with them first on my future purchases. -Kevin read more

I went to this CarMax to have my Acura appraised. I was hoping to get an estimate close to the buyout of $22,500 so that I could purchase a new car, but I wasn't overly optimistic. I made an appointment and when I arrived, a nice woman (I think her name was DeeDee) greeted me. We went through all the preliminary questions and then she said the appraisal process would take about a half hour. That was fine, so I had a seat and waited. About 45 minutes later, DeeDee approached me to say that the appraisal was done. We sat down and she let me know that my car had been appraised at $16,000; far less than the buyout amount. I wasn't deluded enough to think I would get the whole $22,500, but I certainly didn't think I would see a number like that. When I asked why it was so low, DeeDee looked over the estimate and noted that there appeared to have been some "prior paintwork" to the trunk lid and it looked like the apron had been repaired in the past. My car has never been in an accident and I told her so. DeeDee went to get the appraiser (Tim) so that he might shed some light on this. He came over to the desk where I was sitting and told me that there were sure signs that my car had been repaired in the past and that the trunk had been removed at some point in time. Tim told me that one sure sign was that the bolts holding the trunk on were not aligned as they should be from the factory. I told him that I didn't know why that would be and repeated that the car had never been in an accident. Tim did state that according to Carfax, my car had indeed never been in an accident. He then started telling me that my car could have been in some sort of accident at the original dealership that damaged the trunk and apron when I had taken it in for regular service and had not been told about it. I said thank you, took my appraisal, and left. What Tim told me is a ridiculous cock and bull story that simply doesn't add up. To suggest that the servicemen at the Acura dealer, performing regular, standard service somehow smashed the rear end of my car and then did not tell me about it is just ludicrous. I felt like Tim was just trying to take advantage of someone who he thought is ignorant of how cars work. I would certainly not recommend this CarMax dealership to anyone looking for an appraisal or a used car. They're all smiles, but in my experience, it was just a con job to lowball me on an appraisal. The most shady, deceptive business practices I have ever come across. Their no questions asked five day 100% money back guarantee is false advertising. They sold me a car with undisclosed water damage issues amongst other issues and took ownership of my vehicle by paying off lien & starting restoration for resale during time frame that was still in my purview to return vehicle. This made my return a nightmare and resulted in my having to pay significant amount of money out of pocket to walk away from the sale. They made repeated commitments they did not honor. I was very disappointed in this dealership the salesman was very unprofessional and he explained nothing of the vehicle not even down to the color, he was busy on his phone during the test drive. I asked to have the car cleaned and to have a scratch buffed out of the paint as I left to gather gas for my other vehicle while the vehicle was being tended to, as I return the vehicle has not been cleaned and the salesman says oh I didn't have it cleaned because you left. I got a bad key fob and a request was put in for a replacement and once in they are telling me that I have to leave work early to get this programmed to the car because they close at 5 and they don't do programming on saturdays. I should not have to be placed in a compromising position for a fault of theirs and the employee just said ok and told me to call when I can. Carmax on Capital Blvd.in Raleigh NC, has a service department full of rude, condescending employees who are just looking for a reason to not honor the 30 day warranty or the extended warranty that can be purchased at time of sale. My son (19 years old) purchased a car (his 1st) from them, with in 15 days the clutch started acting up. They took the car into service, and passed it off to a local Nissan dealer for service. After a few days the car was returned to him with a statement that the CSC was replaced. Approximately a month later the same issue presented! Carmax then sent us directly to Nissan because they "are not capable of servicing that caliber of car". Now the experience with Nissan is a horror story for another day!! After stating nothing is wrong with the car and requiring some pushing on our end, Nissan stated they see a slight deficiency and they flushed the CSC and replaced the fluid with some upgraded/ high performance fluid. Low and behold, about a month later, more problems....this time the clutch is completly gone!!! We return to Carmax and of course they don't want to touch it, so they offer to tow it from our house to Nissian, and take ownership for the communication with Nissian. Finally Nissian says ok we see there is an issue we will break the car completly down. Nissian notifies Carmax that the clutch is completly burnt and must be replaced at a cost of over $2300. Now that there is real money and ownership involved, suddenly Carmax states they will not pay for the repairs. There was an exhaustive list of reasons why this is not the same issue as the one that occurred with in the 30 day warranty, why it would not be covered in the extended warranty that was purchased with the sale of the car. Eric who stated he was the service supervisor was extemly rude and combative with my son in person and even more so with my husband over the phone. If Carmax is ever my only option for purchasing a car I will take a trip to Walmart and purchase a bicycle, before I ever step foot on one of their lots. Carmax is a joke and so is the warranty!!! Do NOT give them your business, precious time or hard earned money! Hey Carmax maybe your should consider a name change "CarFarm" or maybe even "CarMill" since just like puppy mills your pump out subpar product and do not stand by your product when the buy calls you on your inadequate service. We bought a car here and the sales man Earl was so helpful. It was pouring rain the night we arrived and the car was not where it was supposed to be. It took him a while to find it and he did. We loved the car and as you should do with a used car we took it for an inspection. The tires were not on the best shape and we took it back and with very little explanation they replaced them for us the service team of Matt and Colt and Richard were fantastic. We also needed a new key and some paint touched up and they did it all the same day so we would not have to make a trip back. I just want to say how thankful we are to the whole crew there at the North Raleigh Carmax. We would recommend them to anyone and we know where we are going for our next used car! read more

The saying "three strikes you're out" is the best way for me to describe my experience at CarMax. I initially stayed away from CarMax because their prices are higher than I'm looking for. After more than a month of unsuccessful searching, I finally decided to check it out. Our salesman was friendly, not at all pushy, and very patient. We checked out three cars and test drove one which we decided to purchase. Strike one was the recalls. There were two outstanding recalls on the car that CarMax said they don't take care of. Not at all a deal breaker though! The day after I purchased the car, I took it to the dealership and spent a couple hours getting the two recalls sorted out, plus an additional recall that CarMax hadn't informed me of. Still fine at the time because I'd had such a great car buying experience thus far. Strike two was the mechanical issues. Two days after buying the car I took it to my mechanic (used for every car in my family, 5 stars on yelp). They found 4 minor issues with the car costing about $200 total i.e. not nothing but not a huge deal. I go back to CarMax to have them make the repairs cause I've got that 30 day warranty. Well I've got a timeline (leaving town) and they've got no appointments, so we start trying to figure out options. The employee who worked with us spoke to us as suspects, as if we would take time out of our own lives to bamboozle them. She went on to tell us that their mechanics will have to decide if these mechanical issues are "legitimate" i.e. they may or may not be taking care of them. So I call up management about our treatment and the mechanical issues, and that employee was great! She informed me that you can make repairs after the 30 days as long as you report the problem in that time frame. Great! First employee could've told me that instead of patronizing us, but second employee has made it all better so I'm still satisfied with the experience at this point. Strike two and a half - I get in the car, go to open the moonroof and the rubber weatherproofing strip falls on me. No touching, no tampering, just falls. Still fine though. In the moment I'm sure CarMax will fix it no problem. Strike three came when I went to the credit union to finalize my financing and their system valued the car's worth at $2000 less than what I paid for it. So after this whole ordeal spanning three days, I'm over here like "great, I'm getting ripped off." Long story short, I'm returning the car to CarMax and looking for one which won't be a rip-off, won't have mechanical issues, and won't waste three days of my life being resolved. Let's hope this is a CarMax exception rather than the rule. read more

I am a 72 year old single lady. I was dreading the car buying experience, however, it turned out to be the best I have ever had. I looked for a few months online at Carmax and finally found exactly what I was looking for. I put a hold on it and set up an appointment to go and test drive it. Jake Henshaw called me within 30 minutes of my putting a loan calculation through to see what my payments would be. He let me know that I had pre-qualified. After the loan went through I went to test drive the car. It was perfect! There was no pressure and I could look further if I wasn't satisfied with the car that I had picked out. Jake gave me his cell number and I felt that he was available to me should I have any further questions. The paperwork was essentially done. All I had to do was sign and I was out the door. It was a pleasant and friendly atmosphere and not at all like what I was dreading. All the personnel were upbeat and positive and Jake was fantastic! A great choice of cars to pick from as well.
