I am now sitting in the waiting room for the third time to get this camera replaced. I was promised a loaner car but I have now been here for 40 minutes and no car. BUYER BEWARE So my sister and I bought a 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe in May of 2023. since then the serpentine belt as broke 5 times and it still is under 20000 miles. While the service seems to be trying its is not working. She is a nurse and needs a reliable car to get to the hospital you would think a 2021 car would be reliable. I called myself and they kept pulling it off saying the vehicle got transferred but was waiting on quality check, finally I started getting annoyed so I then texted the lady and she proceeded to tell me they "lost" the title to vehicle and it would take up to a year. i then said forget about it. Tried to buy a truck from carmax it was the worst experience I ever had there. I had the truck shipped In when it got there I waited for the post shipment Inspection to be complete when it was the web site said it would be ready to test drive on the 8th. I never heard anything so I called talked to a young lady who sounded like I interrupt her lunch I asked her when I could see the truck she put me on hold when she came back she stated the title was not shipped with the vehicle and I would not be able to drive the truck till the had the title and asked if I still waned the truck I said yes. A few days later I got a message the truck was ready So we set a time and date. On the day of the test drive we were half the way there my phone went off saying that when they were checking the truck out before the drive an air bag light came on and they had To fix it I told them I was still coming hoping to see the truck but it did ent happen got there and was told the truck was not available.so we drove 35 miles for nothing. Days later I got a phone call from them saying the car-is at dealership for repair with no idea whenit will be done do I still want the truck was all i got I said no is that all he said yes lol. I hate car dealerships, furniture stores, and anything else involving high pressure sales. I'm easily aggravated when people try to lay it on thick or push me toward something that doesn't interest me in the least. Carmax is a breath of fresh air in the car buying industry. To answer the question everyone asks, NO - you really CANNOT haggle the sticker price. YES - you really will pay the sticker price. You have control over your payment amount and loan terms though. You have control over your credit score. I did my homework. I left with a 2016 Jeep Patriot with 17k miles with a 2.74% interest rate. I put down a decent chunk of cash which resulted in payments of only $157/month. Had I went with Carmax's rates, and not put any money down, my payments would have been $330+. Do. Your. Homework. Make an appointment if you're coming on a sunny Saturday. We were quoted a 1hr 20 min wait time! We were hungry and went to have lunch, and that wait time was significantly reduced, but it would've been nice to get on the lot right away. I live about an hour west of Merrillville, but I had my eye on the exact vehicle I wanted at this store, so I test drove one in Naperville before heading here. The no pressure sales had us driving this vehicle off the lot very quickly. The business office staff are efficient and clear when explaining the paper work. You will have MANY opportunities to ask questions - and like a job interview, make sure that you do have questions. No one pushed the warranty on me. They didn't even try to talk us into their financing when I told them the rate we had through our credit union. They were helpful in giving clear instruction as to what I needed to provide to my credit union. We had zero difficulty with our out of state purchase. Our sales guy was super cool, funny, and personable. While he did inquire if we were interested in any other vehicles, we weren't pushed at all to test drive any others, nor was there any pressure to buy the Jeep. Sure, maybe I would've saved a little bit of money if I shopped at a regular dealer and haggled. MAYBE. But like I said, I did my homework. Carmax's prices on Jeep Patriots weren't too dissimilar from traditional dealers. It seems the negative reviews focus on the warranty, which I didn't purchase, and the service center, which I did not utilize. So I can't comment on those. We have purchased two used cars here in the last couple of months and the entire process for both was extremely quick, easy, and we're happy with both vehicles. We had Brandon and Larry as salesmen and both were personable and professional. We had to use the service department for one of them a week after purchase (the tire pressure light was on and the tire pressure in all four tires was fine - turned out to be a sensor that needed replacement). Derek (Derrick?) in the service department was really great about getting us an appointment for this and fitting us in as we live more than an hour away and our schedules were super tight when this happened. The service technician was very thorough in explaining everything too and it was covered under the 90 days/4,000 mile warranty. So far, so good! read more

Purchased a 2014 Ford Explorer in Nov. 2016. Pretty simple and easy process. Salesman (James) was cool. Took it in for oil change in Feb. 2017 to my local place after driving 6k miles. They told me all 4 tires were bald and I needed new tires ASAP. Went back to Carmax. Service guy was rather defensive and condescending. I even emailed the salesman for help - no reply. We are currently trying to work out a fair deal but my initial reaction to Carmax service is not good as they treated me like an inconvenience to them and as if I were a moron. So last year my wife and I bought a 2018 Dodge Journey from Carmax in Merrillville and we were happy got a great deal great price for our trade and in and out in a decent time frame. Fast forward 1 year exactly when our car starts leaking every time it rains so ok we have a warranty and trying to get a hold of someone in carmax service is an absolute joke they never answer the phone so we showed up and got nothing but attitude because we didn't schedule an appointment well how the hell can we schedule when they refuse to answer the phone or even return our call. My wife calls corporate customer service and they tell us ok hold we will call only ro come back and tell my wife huh they won't answer after multiple attempts so after 2 weeks of trying to get our car fixed the manager FINALLY says ok we will look at it and ordered the part said come back next week and we will fix. Wife brings the car in and wouldn't you know the manager is on vacation and nobody knows shit about our car so have to wait another week until he returns. Get the car in and "supposedly" it gets fixed. Fast forward 2 weeks car and wouldn't you know car isn't fixed so my wife went through the same shit trying to call once again finally after a week of trying and calling corporate again she gets the car in today only to get a major attitude and they tell my wife that she shouldn't of taken the car somewhere else for a diagnosis I will quote my wife "Bitch I have only ever brought it here twice now and your department ordered the supposed part" only to still get an attitude. My advise to everyone NEVER DEAL WITH CARMAX SERVICE DEPT. THEY ARE A COMPLETE JOKE AND DEFINITELY NOT WORTH THE HASSLE. I WILL NOT BE BUYING ANOTHER CAR FROM CARMAX !!!!! read more

arrived @ Merrillville CarMax upon opening time. walk I'm to get an estimate, put my name on the list & was told I'm next in line it shouldn't be long. waited 1.5hrs killing time looking at their cars when I decided to remind them I was there. received lots of attitude and was told my turn would come eventually although no one would give me a time frame. I went to CarMax after a terrible experience with a dealership I had used three times. Last time was a huge let-down. CarMax was great start to finish. A fair estimate was given for my trade-in and the rep, Larry, who worked with me on my purchase of a CarMax vehicle could not have been more accommodating. There was no pressure to buy. Every person there was off-the-charts friendly and helpful. I can't imagine ever going to a dealership again. As this is my first purchase from CarMax, I did purchase the warranty. I hope I never have a need to use it but it seems to cover all the things that may be of concern to me. All of them! I love my car and don't foresee trading it in for a very long time, but if and when I do I will definitely head to CarMax for the next transaction! read more

Having decided we wanted to downsize from two SUVs to one pickup truck, we took them to a dealer about trading in the two year old 12,000 mile vehicles. The leading truck manufacturers dealer near Carmax offered us what I felt was a few thousand low. That evening I happened to be browsing trucks on Edmunds web site, and they offered appraisals. Into the appraisal process, they came back with an instant offer, it turns out from Carmax. A total of $10.5 K more for an outright sale to them than the nearby F**'d dealer offered as trade ins. Curious, I made an appointment for the next day. They looked at the cars for ten minutes and verified the offers. Sold them one on the spot and left with cash in hand. No questions, no fuss just a fast simple sale. Keeping the other till the truck we had to order arrives. Clean store, big lot, lots of cars. If we ever decide to buy a second car again I will definitely check out the Carmax inventory. And if your car is in good condition make sure you get a quote on selling to them or trading in there. No haggle dealership which doesn't seem to take in junkers. The lowest price I can find in their inventory is $8K. read more

I recently purchased a car from Carmax. The salesman helped me to pick the right vehicle, and we proceeded to secure the financing. I received an approval from a bank, and they required that I show proof of income, and proof of insurance, of which I had both. I am a retired federal law enforcement officer with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and I receive a monthly pension payment. I am also a disabled military veteran, and I receive a monthly check from the Veteran's Administration. The sales/finance manager (Garrett) requested the proof of income and I provided it. At that time, Garrett indicated that the proof of income that I provided was not sufficient and requested 30 days bank statements. I provided that as well at which time he requested an additional three months bank statements. I felt like this was highly unusual, but I reluctantly provide it as well. After that, Garrett stated that he needed another form of proof of income, showing that my pension payments would last a lifetime (there is no such documentation). I informed him that this was all I had. (We were both viewing my online account with my pension information and he could clearly see that it was a retirement pension). He told me that I needed more information. I drove home and found an additional document that contained the exact same information as what I originally gave and he finally accepted it. I returned to Carmax and purchased the vehicle. I was completely humiliated by the actions of Garrett. He was NOT acting on behalf of the bank because he never even spoke with them during this entire transaction. It is my opinion that Garrett showed unfair bias towards me as an African American. He clearly saw that I had the proper documentation for my income and proof of insurance. Yet, he took it upon himself to require additional, unnecessary documentation for this transaction. This was the third vehicle I purchased in the last six months. I have never been treated this way in the past. Garrett gave Carmax a very bad image during my transaction. read more

As a young African-American Male, I am highly offended by the service that was presented to me by a senior caucasian. I felt as if the Salesman tried to belittle me and not only that, he continuously jumped to conclusions as if I did not have anything to present before I sat down in the chair and explained to him what I wanted to do. We sat and talked and it was really small talk. To be honest completely, I didn't feel welcomed at all and the thing that topped it all off was, as I was getting up he gave me his card information and while sitting down, reached his hand out and the handshake that he had given me was NOT professional at all. Well, I was honestly looking for a vehicle, I saw two that I was interested in and had questions. I don't really want to walk throughout the entire lot looking for someone. We have always had good service at this particular Carmax until today. Bought cars here, sold cars here and had cars serviced here. Had a wheel bearing on my Ford fixed here around 3 or 4 years ago. No problems- great service. Price given up front. Needed my passenger wheel bearing replaced. Called up and they want a $60 fee to look at it. Ok no problem. The problem lies at the next point when they could not tell me how much it would cost to repair. Said bring it in. Economy has changed. Different vendors charge different prices. All kind of excuses. Thank you but no thank you. Will take my business elsewhere. read more

This is for the merrillville/Hobart location. The salesman kept chewing gum and Checking his cell phone. I guess he must have had important business to tend too. He knew nothing about the cars. Absolutely nothing. Mind you I had made an appointment. Then when discussing financing he suggested that I work more to make the payment. When I had left I realized I did not have my license. I called and was told they did not have it. Looked everywhere. Then a month later they called and said that they had it. Hmmm too bad they don't put people's addressees on it so they could have mailed it. This place is simply terrible. It's like a bunch of goons work there. Took our newly purchased 2013 Kia in for service after our own mechanic found a few issues. Everything we mentioned was taken care of. The only downside was the car was there for over a week, though of course they provided a loaner. Our mechanic says things look good. Our salesperson, Kim, was outstanding and was the entire office staff. Would definitely recommend CarMax and tell them to ask for Kim. read more

CarMax in Merrillville is very friendly and outgoing when you purchase your car. They even make sure you know that if ANYTHING goes wrong within 30 days then they'll take care of it under their warranty. What they don't tell you is that their service department has made up hours - sure the website says 7:30am-6pm, but don't be fooled! They only keep mechanics there until 5pm. So, if you try to go between 5pm and 6pm, they won't even take your car in for the night for them to work on it the next day. In fact, they will tell you that you have to come back on Monday and then they can help you. Then you can call them on Monday at 7:30am and have nobody answer. So you leave a message. Nobody calls back. So, then you call back and hour later. Rinse. Repeat. You do this hourly and then somebody calls you back at 1:45pm. That person says "Sorry, we can't bring in your car after 1:30." You ask for a manager. They transfer you to voicemail. You speak to a manager and they blame you for it "Nobody makes a same day appointment." You explain that you were doing exactly what you were told but they don't care. They don't have space to get your car in and diagnose it despite being told that you could. They say that it doesn't matter that you took a half day off work to go in - that they'll do you a big favor and give you a courtesy car while you drop yours off and then they'll look at it in a few days. So, you're steaming mad after being ignored all then being told that you were dumb for thinking you could bring your car in today. That's when you ask your significant other to call for you and see if you can find some resolution. They call corporate and reach a friendly lady - who then calls the store and confirms that they're going to be unwilling to help you. The person at the store, Roger, proceeds to act like it's all your fault that nothing has been done and then tell you "We always answer the phone" like we're lying. The corporate rep has no power over the store service manager to get anything done and doesn't ever interject or ask anything. The store manager hangs up on me and the corporate rep says "I know you're mad, but at least you can get a loaner car." Why post service hours if those are made up and you refuse to help anyone during them? You know what's worse? The car has a blinking check engine light would usually means catastropic failure. Their refusal to get the car in could lead to a major repair. We will be extremely vocal in opposing CarMax to anyone who is looking to purchase a car. Shame on you. read more

I found the vehicle I wanted at CarMax in Dayton Ohio and paid the $200 transfer fee, the vehicle was transported to Merrillville within 7 days without any issues or Delay. The vehicle was in excellent condition and I`m very happy. The battery went bad in a week and CarMax took care of it 100%. I have many years experience as a auto mechanic and understand that can be a normal issue with used vehicles. I am completely satisfied with CarMax, their staff and the way they do business. I did a buncha research before coming here to test drive some cars. At my request, they imported the car I ended up buying from one of the local Carmaxes, which is convenient. The have an established test track, but it's a good mix of local and highway, plus Route 30. The salesman and the signing agent were helpful and friendly.
