If I could give MaxCare zero stars, I would. This was hands-down the worst experience I have ever had with a business. My car sat unusable from January 2 to March 4 waiting for repair approval due entirely to MaxCare's delays, poor internal organization, and complete lack of communication. I was repeatedly asked to submit the same documentation over and over again -- including information that was already in their system and documents they had previously sent to me. Communication with both me and the repair shop was consistently terrible. I had to constantly call just to get basic updates, and even then nothing moved forward. At times, it genuinely felt like they were intentionally delaying or avoiding approving the claim. MaxCare did not provide a rental or loaner vehicle. I was without transportation for over two months, which caused lost income and extreme stress, especially while I was planning a wedding. After all of this, they still failed to approve all necessary repairs, leaving me potentially responsible for a future engine replacement -- something my warranty should have covered. I will never purchase a MaxCare warranty again and will actively tell everyone I know to avoid them. I will warn friends, family, coworkers, and anyone who asks about my experience to stay far away from MaxCare and CarMax. This company wasted months of my time, caused real financial harm, and provided absolutely nothing resembling customer support. Do not make the same mistake I did. read more

As usual, Carmax is a piece of shit place that loves to waste my time. I went there to get my window wiper fixed for free, but they had no idea what they were doing, they told me there wasn't anything wrong with it, but I know what I saw and it tried to snap off. As usual, Carmax isn't a good place to be at. They love to waste time, their service is terrible and when I actually needed help, they turned me away like I was a piece of trash. I also don't like how friendly they are. Other people might be fooled by it, but not me, I see right through them. They only want money from suckers and don't care about their needs. A couple of weeks after this review they "earned" the one star vs. the possible zero. Eventually tracked down and received the car and the price we went in for...after calling the 800 # everyday, wasting dozens of hours on the phone, constantly being told I would be called back by a manager to again not receiving a call over and over. Eventually wrote an email to the CEO and then was resolved fairly quickly. If you want flex your muscles as a customer and hold a business accountable this is the place to shop! If you want an easy stress free shopping experience where you expect to receive what you are told this is not the place for you! If I was on the clock for all the time I spent on getting the car we were guaranteed it would have been at least a couple of grand cheaper. read more

About a year after my last visit, I wanted a second car. Since my prior interaction was so satisfying, I went to Carmax Lynchburg again. The experience in 2019 was a huge disappointment. I used the same process I had before. I contacted through the website and expressed interest in the same type of cars (hybtid). Someone from Carmax called to prequalfy me for a loan for the most expensive one. So.eone else called and demanded I pay to have vehicles moved to their lot so I could see them. It was late at night and I was tired so I paid. This was on a Tuesday the week before I had a week vacation. I told the woman that I wanted to get a vehicle the next week while on vacation. I called every day the next week asking when I could see the vehicles I paid to see. It was never convenient. Finally, on Friday a week as after I started the process, I was still told I couldn't come to the lot to shop for cars, but someone would drive one to my town as long as I could prove I had already insured the vehicle I had never or seen. The upshot is they have apparently moved to a penny ante fee charging scam I stead of selling used cars. I had my old car detailed and kept it. I gave them a 2 (instead of the 1 they really deserved) for their speed in collecting the car viewing fees and qualifying me for a loan as if they planned to sell me a car. read more

I'm giving this Lynchburg location two stars, and that's generous - only because the salesman was trying to be helpful. We drove an hour to this CarMax after being preapproved for a loan. My car was totaled in an accident and I had very little time to find a new car and no idea what I wanted. We got to the lot and I found four cars I liked and asked for test drive. (This was after I found several and they were "unavailable" because they were on hold for other people to test drive.) I went inside to go through the lengthy process to be able to test drive a car. After waiting, we were told the sales manager said we could only drive two cars because they had a limit of two per day - but we could certainly come back the next day and drive the other two if they were still available. EXCUSE ME??? They knew we drove an hour each way to come and make a decision. Regardless, the sales manager wouldn't even speak to me. Sent the salesman to give the news. Ended up hating both the cars we tested and left with no car and no plans to return. I ended up going to another CarMax location the next day. Drove two hours each way. Told them my situation and they let me test as many as I wanted so I could make a decision. Made the decision and bought a car. They were awesome. NEVER AGAIN WOULD I RETURN TO THE LYNCHBURG LOCATION NOR WOULD I RECOMMEND ANYONE ELSE GO THERE. Pick a different CarMax. read more

I was skeptical at first by them telling me I was preapproved before arriving, but when I got there, all was good. I had a young salesman by the name of Caleb K. and he was amazing. He kept me reassured that I was going home in a nice, good, dependable car. We also had great conversations about life. I felt welcome and like I have known him my entire life. Our experience buying with CarMax wasn't a very good one. We drove 4 hours to get there and had an appointment to buy a car. When we got there, the battery was down and had to wait an hour just to get the car started. I brought over 9 thousand dollars, what ever they said to bring to pay the difference between our trade in and their car. Then they wanted 40 more dollars which I didn't bring. My wife gave them the 40 dollars, and CarMax told her that she would get it back when we payed DMV. We ended up paying 91.50 to DMV when we got home. I just wonder if CarMax beats everybody out of more money when they buy from them. They probably split the money up every evening, My last time dealing with a bunch of RIP OFFS. When we left CarMax that evening, I told my wife that the DMV wasn't in the business of giving people back their money. Very disappointed with CarMax !!! Fred M. read more

I have purchased my last two cars from CarMax. The beauty is in the process. You do your homework up front to determine if you want to pay their price and if you do then test drive and buy. If you don't like that car they will bring another one in to test drive. No price haggling at the lot. If you don't want to pay the listed price, then look elsewhere. Worst service and bunch of liars tell you what you want to hear to get you to buy the vehicle then say they are to busy to fix problems you were promised to be fixed if you bought it. Bought jeep on a Saturday evening. Was promised for rotors to be fixed that tuesday got to appointment time and was told no appointment was set. Rescheduled to the following tuesday now they are telling me we dont have an appointment. The vehicle was dropped off at 730 they had it all day so I called them at 315 they told me to bad bc I didnt have am appointment. So couldnt even call me and talk to me about it had to make me call. I cant speak for all carmax but the LYNCHBURG VA CARMAX is trash. Do yourself a huge service and go elsewhere. read more

If you're only in the market to purchase, it might be an "OK" experience. However, if you're looking to possibly trade-in a vehicle; I wouldn't recommend CarMax at all. I went in with my wife on Saturday, 6/27/15 and the appraisal they offered was approx. ~$2,000 below the Edmund's, Kelly Blue Book (KBB), BlackBook, and NADA guide. I understand the need to make money as a part of doing business, but I feel the "low ball" offer was extremely unfair and made me uneasy about even considering shopping there at all. So, I rated this a 5-star for many, many reasons. Where to begin??? I drive to Sterling, VA, to see a Mini Cooper at Quality Auto. Now, they too were honest but their financiers suck, and they allowed me to drive four hours to try and low ball me on my trade in, and they spoke in some Slavic dialect, IN FRONT OF ME, about my trade-in. So disrespectful and just bad practice! So, I drove another four hours home.... At this time pretty pissed and depressed. I got on CarMax application to search for a Mini, and it turns out they had a appraisal service, and I was contacted by CarMax HQ in Atlanta and they were very honest and upfront, such a relief! So I showed up and the same honesty and upfrontness I had on the phone was in the form of Dan, a fellow veteran who I connected with instantly! My truck was fairly appraised based upon their auctioning sites per that week! People, they only appraise based upon their auctioning sites weekly sales, no Kelly Blue Book as I did. Anyway, it was fair and paid off my truck's lien. I wanted a Mini Cooper but I found a Jeep Renegade, standard that would fit my lifestyle well, as I spend the weekend hiking, so I chose this. Their financier worked with my credit, although the APR sucks, life changes and I can refinance once it gets better. Wesley and JT stayed well over an hour after closing to finish the paperwork and the whole staff is excellent! Dan was awesome and everyone was upfront and honest! Even to their contractual agreements, like they are not commissioned and are hourly paid. I have a pleasant expierenxe and a great feeling with them. If I could give this place zero stars, I would. I never leave bad reviews, because I feel most are left out of emotion and are not necessarily a clear reflective picture of the entire experience, but this time I'm makign an exception. A family member recently purchased their new Lincoln from Carmax and raved about the customer service they experienced. We were considering a new minivan for our family and decided THIS was the place to go based on the review we had heard. We searched inventory and found a van that we really wanted to test drive. My husband put in the request and got a confirmation back that the request was processing and they'd let us know when it was ready to drive. Over a week later, we hadn't heard anything so we called them and they said the request never went through. The guy there was nice and made the request for us that day and gave us another confirmation. A little over a week later we got an email that the van was ready to test drive. We call this am to schedule the test drive and were told the van had a hold on it, and no one knew if that was for us or not. The lady transferred us to another employee who heard the whole story and couldn't give a straight answer as to whether or not THAT particular van was there and available for us to drive. He said there was A van that we could come and drive, so my husband explained that I'd be there Wednesday afternoon. We were then told that I couldn't do the test drive without changing the entire request and do paperwork in my name (although I would be the one driving this van when we purchased it). That was going to take much more time and we had already been waiting over two weeks at this point, so we asked to speak to a supervisor or manager. My husband repeatedly requested to speak to someone else and the guy on the phone refused to transfer him. He kept saying he couldn't transfer a call, but wouldn't give him the name/number of the manager either. My husband and I both work in and manage or have managed customer service departments for our companies, so it is very frustrating to receive such poor service and deal with people who seem to a) not know what they are doing and b) not really care to know either. I have no doubt that Carmax is a nice company to work with in general, but this local branch convinced me to not give them a try any more. We will deal with Carvana or another local dealer. read more

I showed up for our service appointment one week early. I told them the wrong date and we drove in from NC for warranty repairs. Keith fit us in, got us in a rental until parts arrived and had us repaired and on our way a day early. They went above and beyond to provide great service. We will absolutely make the drive back to the Burg for CarMax Lynchburg. read more

I don't particularly blame this location, as the car was brought in from out of state, but my Corvette stalled out and had to be towed two weeks after purchase. The local Chevrolet dealer had to replace the fuel pump and do other diagnosing to the tune of $1050.00. read more
