I had a 2008 Nissan Pathfinder that was on a truck platform with 150k miles, 4WD, BOSE speakers, leather seats, sunroof, moonboards, fully loaded with killer new tires that gets you to those remote BLM destinations only Jeeps and Landcruisers can access. I had done my research by checking the car's fair trade in value on Kelly Blue Book. They offered me $1200 for trade in when KBB stated average was $4k for "good" condition. To me, $1200 is what a junkyard would pay you to scrap the car for the metal. I was VERY shocked so I would *NOT* recommend trading your car into CarMax! However, I did test drive a new-ish Pathfinder (2018 I believe) and although it was a nice, comfortable ride, it just wasn't like the old Nissans. I had serious doubts the Pathfinder could perform off road like the 2008 predecessor. It's more like a minivan now. I'm sure Toyota is happy since they no longer have real competition in that space! Felipe helped me and he was awesome! Great communicator. We looked at a couple other models, but in the end, the Pathfinder was really just not for me anymore after that test drive. I ended up test driving a Jeep Rubicon at a different Carmax location and fell in love with that instead! Do yourselves a favor and ask for Felipe at this location! He's a great guy! It's not his fault Nissan doesn't make awesome 4WDs anymore. ;) But he DOES know his cars, he has exceptional manners and he is honest. I would give Felipe 5 stars, but I knocked this rating down one star to 4 stars because of the ridiculous trade in offer. read more

Buying from a major retailer like CarMax is supposed to offer peace of mind regarding vehicle inspections and safety, but this was a terrifying and dangerous situation. I dealt with Austin, who made this entire process incredibly difficult and failed to provide the support or oversight expected when a customer's safety is at stake. I almost got into an accident with my family in the vehicle because my newly purchased vehicle stalled on the highway. I spoke to Austin multiple times about my issue, and he proved to be more of a roadblock for my safety than helpful. Because of the severe safety risks and the lack of professional accountability, I will be moving forward with formal complaints to the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and the State Department to ensure this location is held responsible. Avoid this location (CarMax Golden)--especially if you value your safety and don't want to deal with the headache I faced. read more

Purchased a high dollar truck recently and shipped cross-border with their transit service. Original website posting showed 2 paint scuffs, one on the door and another on the bumper. Truck arrived at CarMax location after transit and had paint damage on the quarter panel, front and rear bumper that was NOT disclosed on the website listing. The paint damage and dents happened during transit, and they said that it happens and that customers usually don't mind any extra damage during transit. They also denied it was paint damage and said that just a clear decal needed to be replaced, when it was obvious that you could see metal. They were pretty clear that they do not cover transit damage. Sales team him-hawed to get rid of us so we would just drive away. Tail light fixture was also busted during transit, or at some point, but was never disclosed. They said they would replace it, but they never did. Head sales guy promised to make it right and never contacted us after the sale. Be aware of corporate greed, empty promises, and a lack of customer service. You get what you see, AFTER you get the keys, so make sure to scan the vehicle before signing on the dotted line. read more

I've bought several cars from CarMax in the past, but I will not do so in the future. I had to return the last car I bought from them because it had so many issues after I had it inspected. The car had passed their so-called inspection, but the problems it had should have been caught before sale. They were not. The customer service at the company in general has really been a problem for me. Communication is terrible, and problems simply have not been taken care of in a quick and competent way. My first and last time buying from CarMax. It took two months of pushing them weekly to get the title right for sale. Finally got the car I wanted, but drove it off the lot and straight into a $750.00 routine maintenance fee on a transmission flush that should have been done at 45000 miles (I bought the vehicle with 46000 miles on it). I asked CarMax to take care of that, but the answer was "sorry, not sorry". I am not surprised that they currently have a class action suit against them for not performing their much hyped 125-point pre-sale inspections. They certainly put the "dis" in disreputable. EVERY TIME A CARMAX AD SHOWS UP ON MY FEED I WILL POST MY ISSUE!!! ...My first breakdown was 11 days after I purchased this vehicle in April of 2019, and the same problem has been happening ever since. That's 1 year and 5 months. I have only had my vehicle a total of almost 6 months....This is now the 9TH TIME this vehicle, WITHOUT WARNING , has left me stranded on the side of the road. You should be embarrassed to have a person like Robert Garcia on your payroll. I will not talk with him anymore as his way of offering help is, "Would you like me to call 911?" Or "Let me call your employer and see if they can provide transportation." The GM, John Ruffing, informed me, even though I believe this is the same type of malfunction, nobody knows for sure without a diagnosis and that won't happen for weeks. I feel like I did something wrong, and now I HAVE NO TRANSPORTATION. I need a reliable vehicle, to get to work, to pay off the loan, that I got for a reliable vehicle to have a job... I was on a super tight budget and my credit had taken a recent slip so I needed to get what I could. Honestly, I feel so duped. They clearly give you thirty days to have it appraised or looked at because they know they aren't selling the safest cars in a truly sellable condition. Within the time I've had the vehicle I've maybe put 2k miles on it and already had the transmission need to be replaced, thankfully it was somehow under warranty when I took it to Subaru. The A/C does NOT blow cold air and they never reached out about helping replace the missing cup holder piece which makes it functional. They are having issues with retitling a car. It has been 3 weeks of efforts. No calls , no follow ups. Horrible , horrible customer service. I called today to follow up and was told no ETA on wait. I have so much to say and wish no stars were an option!!! I hope you will take a minute to read this if you are looking at a car at Carmax. 1st off, the car we were interested in, arrives from CA and we go to test drive it. We stood there for 15 minutes waiting for the car to be pulled around.... no car. The representative comes back and proceeds to tell us the car won't start. I asked him if it at least attempted to turn over. He proceeds to tell me it tried and then he put a jump box on it and it then made no attempt to start, not even a click. Rep tells us he will have it looked at in am. Okay, maybe battery but to not jump, is not a great sign. We go home. Two days later (yes 2) they call and tell us it was the battery and we can come in to test drive. Finally! We get there and it is a beautiful 2018 Ford Edge with low miles. But as we all know.... looks aren't everything and this is a perfect example. We drive it and I insist on the 24 hr test drive. Good thing!!! Going to work, fine. Driving home, check engine light comes on! Again, "we will have someone look at it and get right back to you". Now for me, HUGE RED FLAGS! Well believe it or not, they get bigger!! This is a Tuesday.... they email on Friday and say "we will get to looking at the problem Monday". Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday roll by. Finally an email stating it was a sensor and they would get back to us. 11 days later, after realizing the HUGE RED FLAG had slapped us in the face, we get an email asking if we want to come drive it. Are you kidding me???? In between the 1st and 2nd issues and the lack of communication not to mention the length of time it took them to replace the battery and a sensor tells me something was seriously wrong with this vehicle and rather than trying to assist us in finding another car there was no effort whatsoever. And after not responding to them, they didn't even check back! And believe me these reps know nothing about the cars they are showing you including where they are in the lot. Yes, they sent us out to find it on our own and it wasn't even in that lot! Bottom line..... horrible, horrible experience and I appreciate you reading this. I hope it prevents someone else from getting a HUGE red flag situation. read more

I rarely write reviews but make an exception for Car Max. I had an appointment, and since I was going to be late. I called them up to let them know. Impossible to get through their voice mail system, and when I finally talked to someone, they were rude and would not take me off speaker phone so I could understand them. I arrived 15 mins late as I told them. No car ready, and I was not assigned to a rep, even though I made the reservation 3 days before. After 20 mins I finally got through to the reception rep. Another 20 min to have the truck bought around. The person jumped out of the car, no sales rep was ever assigned. When I asked for the window sticker I was rudely told we do not offer that service from the truck mover. I found the sticker in the glove box. I spent 20 mins looking at the car, no sales rep showed... I had another truck I wanted to see... Finally left, no sales rep no follow up call. Stay away from these guys read more

The staff were friendly and easy to work with. The process went very smoothly and I drove away in a newer model car in nice condition. I'm a bit of an old school shopper when it comes to car buying. I didn't care for "take it or leave it" attitude both on the car price and my trade-in value. I almost called it off over that, but the time savings won me over to accept their deal. I still think I overpaid for the new car and was shorted a couple of hundred in trade -in value. If I had more time to negotiate at a different location, I would have walked away. I have been trying to sell my truck on Craigslist, Marketplace and AutoTrader for the past three months, with no bites. Went in on a whim, expecting to be low balled beyond belief. To my surprise, they offered me only $1k less than I was asking to sell to a private party! There was no hassle and only about a 20 minute wait to get an appraisal!! The male sales associate we were assigned to at the Golden, CO store assumed my husband was the one buying our SUV - I set up the test drive online and the reservation was in my name. The associate spoke directly to husband and didn't introduce himself until I inserted myself into the conversation and informed him that the Jeep was going to be my primary vehicle. He asked my husband for his license for the test drive and seemed surprised when I wanted to test drive my own car. We have bought 5 vehicles in the last 7 years from various CarMax stores and it's always been a great experience, however, this last sale left me thinking that CarMax needs to discuss sexist behavior among its sales associates. read more

Overall a good experience. Positives: Candice was great! They had a decent selection and I got the nicest car I've ever owned. They also made me feel comfortable. They worked it out for me with ify credit and a terminal car. I was a walk in at the Golden location. Drawbacks: It took about 5 hours from looking at available inventory to out the door. No snacks, no beverage for 5 hours. They forgot my temporary tag but over nighted it to me before I ended up on LIVE PD. Suggestion: Use CarMax online preparation. I got an in person KBB offer from an authorized retail center on my 2016 BMW 320i xdrive. They offered $16500 which was $2-3000 less than I was hoping for. I drove across the street to carmax and they helped me do an online quote taking pictures in the lot. I got offered $3000 more ($19500), which ended up being over the KBB trade value. I didn't bother asking KBB (Planet Honda buy center) to beat it because they were so dishonest with their first quote. They actually called me after offering $17500 and could maybe get to $18k but I told them I went with Carmax. Thanks for making it such a seamless experience! We brought an older Subaru WRX to sell. The associate, Misty, was excellent, friendly and professional. The system was very efficient. Of course, the price was less than we could expect from a private party and we elected to try that route first. However, while there, we learned of their sales pitch for cars: No bargaining (means not getting pushed from salesman to salesman), return rights for a week, warranty long enough so any defects might show up. This was my first time buying my own car. In my own name. As a young adult this is a big step and the golden location made it easy and relaxing. They explained everything flat out so I made sure to understand. I went in three different times to try and find a car that fit, and each time I went in I was greeted with the best attitudes, and three different sales people helped me and all listened to my questions and answered them fully. I finally bought a Jeep from them and it's running great! During the buying process they made it simple, explained everything and made sure I was happy with the car I got. Carmax sold me a 2015 Cadillac with broken struts I made them aware that the luxury vehicle they sold me was riding weird and any bump I hit felt like a brick wall....after the 3rd time taking it in carmax sent me to a cheverlot dealership where they diagnosed the car properly but I was forced to pay 160$ for the diagnosis then carmax took over a week to fix my car and gave me a loaner that didn't fit my needs and I had to rent a bigger car for my career travel! I've used the CarMax on broadway several times and the experience was great. There's something wrong with the Golden location. The attitude of the staff who greeted us when we approached the information desk was poor. Seemed to be put off by the idea that we were interested in buying a car. She took our name and we waited for about 25 minutes with no assistance while we watched 7 employees talk and chat in the computer area. It was cold outside and I'm guessing that nobody wanted to go outside. So we left and received great service down the street. read more

The worse experience I have ever had. My husband found a truck he loved and keep in mind needed for his job. His boss gave him 4 weeks to find a truck or he would have to lay my husband off. So my husband called carmax and they said the truck he ooved was in Texas so after being approved we paid yo have the truck sent to our location. This process took 3 weeks. Then we get a call saying we did not get approved vehicle specific. ?! What we were told we were!!! So we go through this ridiculous process then I am told we need yet another document. Then someone tells me everything is great bring in the documents. Then no we need you to log into one of your accounts in our store?! Um no!!! I am not logging into a public computer with my personal info..... then I was told no were good again and guess what now we aren't again! This was the biggest nightmare and now we have less than a week to get my husband a work truck or he has no job. Lousy service all the way around. Not only were they jist slow about everything but they rehected my husbands income and the car has a ton of problems. My husband is playing hell trying to get the car fix thru the service department. And since one of the major issuse we are dealing with is stripped bolts on the manifold and has been setting off a check engine light for a while now. A check engine light they cleared instead of fixing. And now our car has been at the 2nd shop in a week and has been there for 3 days. Miranda is an Angel! My sister in law was at her breaking point with shitty hand me down cars, and I just couldn't take it anymore! I said lets go here and just see what they have, you never know. At first I was caught off guard because they don't try to lead you around the lot. A man showed us where to look, the pricing details are on the windows, and all cars are open so hop in all we want, and off we went. I was kinda ready to argue you know! Typical car lot style! Not here. No haggle is really no haggle. We found a few, so once we got back inside, Miranda took over and actually did some footwork for us to find the perfect car! We did see a nice Ford Edge, which didn't start.... I thought it was hilarious cause...well you know...Ford. Long story short, my sister in law got into a 2015 Nissan Sentra, low miles, not too bad of a price for a first time car buyer. And Miranda was patient, kind, funny, informative, and I felt very genuine and honest.
