The only con is that I would've liked to have searched for another car while waiting on my appraisal but the machine wasn't working. Also, it would've been nice to have been offered water or something while waiting. This CarMax Express/Buying Center is situated on the very busy corner of Peachtree Industrial and Chamblee Dunwoody. It is an old gas station that CarMax converted into a buying and selling location. Note that this place is tiny, legit 700 sq ft...but that is all the space that they need to work their magic! When I was in the market for my Explorer, I made arrangements with this location to bring my old vehicle here for appraisal and trade in and have the Explorer that I saw online at the nearby Norcross store transferred here. They made all this happen without fuss or issue. The evening I arrived, the Explorer was already in place. While one of the Associates completed the appraisal on my vehicle, the other took me out for a test drive. Once we returned, it was time to get the paperwork started. From the time I arrived to the time I was leaving with my new Explorer, only around an hour had passed. The Associates that I was working with were all very professional, knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. CarMax prides themselves on not being the standard car buying experience and I will say that they achieved that with this location. It could not have been a better or easier process...and I got to bring my new baby home, so 100% win-win! read more

The entire appraisal and selling process could not have been easier. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by an appraiser (Drew) who walked me through the process. The registration(?) Took less than 5 minutes, and then he notified me that he will be taking a look at my car and will do a quick test drive, which would take approximately 20 min. He came back sooner than that, documented his findings, and was able to provide me an estimate, all within 20 minutes. Their offer was reasonable, although it is a little lower than the KBB estimate. (FYI - they do not budge on the quote. I tried.) Through the entire process, they were very professional and courteous, making sure I checked for all of my belongings, and even taking my license tag off for me. Overall, if you want to get the most for your car, you'd have to sell it privately. If you want to bypass the hassle (of advertising, meeting up with potential buyers, and keeping/storing the car until you can sell it), then I highly recommend bringing your car to the CarMax Buying Center. read more

Wes Reed was the associate that assisted me with my sale. Very professional young man that throughly explains each step of the process to you. Nice attention to details. They give you your dirty license plate in a envelope that looks especially made for a license plate!! If you need to sell your car do not trade it in the at the dealership! I happened to walk in when no one was there so the whole process took about 30 minutes. The employee told me the average processing time is 25-30 minutes. The employees were friendly and helpful and the process painless. The interior is very simple. There is a TV (ESPN at the time), few chairs, and a coffee machine. Looks like a former gas station. Just be sure to look over the appraisal sheet when you're done. The guy who helped me stated he has been trained to see things and appraise vehicles appropriately but the dude missed the big navi screen. I had to mention it has navi to get $500 more in appraisal value. Honest mistake but just check over the sheet to get the most of our your trade. Another dealership matched Carmax's offer so I walked away with $800 more for my trade in so it was worth the visit. read more

First of all, this review is for the Buckhead Carmax Car Buying Center ONLY. It is not a full CarMax, just a little shack and a parking lot. Second, I'm not 100% on why it's the Buckhead Carmax, because aside from being in the same general direction as Buckhead from my place specifically, it is not even a little bit in Buckhead. Okay, the situation: Brought my car down here from Chicago, it needed more work than it was worth, I needed to sell it but it was still in my Mom's name. I went in, and the two guys there couldn't have been more helpful. One appraised my car while the other scanned the Limited Power of Attorney form my Mom needed to sign, and emailed it directly to her. They gave me a list of instructions, as well as an offer on my car that was more than fair. My Mom received the POA in Chicago, signed it, had it notarized and put it in the mail that day. Two days later, I came back with all the paperwork, the appraisal, and my car, ready to sign the papers and get it done. Except that they told me they couldn't accept any of it, because the POA was missing the title of the document. It looked like it had printed slightly askew, but literally the ONLY thing missing was the title of the document that said, "Limited Power of Attorney." All the information, the legally-binding agreement, signatures, notarization, and dates were there, despite the CarMax agent's insistence that "a quarter" of the document was missing. (We actually had the original that was scanned to compare it to, and he blindly insisted that a full "quarter" was missing. Um, no. Math does not work that way.) I called my mom, who told me that she had printed the attachment exactly as she had received it. The guy who emailed it to her originally must have scanned it slightly funny, but unfortunately, he was not there that day and the guys who were there clearly thought I was lying. They even told me that they don't even email people the POA form, only relenting when I showed them where their co-worker had copied down my Mom's email address, in his own handwriting. I asked if there was anyone else I could talk to, and they told me that their manager had told them not to accept it. I told them that this was THEIR fault, and that by the time I got another hard copy in the mail, my offer (void after 7 days) would be void. I told them that I had now driven over an hour round-trip to them, TWICE, and that it was really starting to become a hassle. I told them that the signature and the agreement was what was legally binding, not the document title. They refused to back down, becoming more and more condescending, even telling me that the notary (a friend of my Mom's) had not done his job in notarizing a document he could not "see in full" and somehow again trying to make it all our fault. Boyfriend's Dad is a lawyer. I got him on the phone, and he confirmed that the document was indeed legally binding, being a notarized hard copy of an agreement, whether or not the title line across the top was present. He said their decision not to accept it was administrative, not legal. By this point, they were closing. I said "fuck it," and we drove to the full-service CarMax in Norcross. They had no problem with any of the paperwork, because it WAS, in fact, all legit, and in 25 minutes I was out the door with a bank draft. Seriously, don't waste your time. These guys don't know what they're doing. An extra star for the first two guys I dealt with, Rob and Dan, who really tried to make the experience go smoothly and gave me high hopes for a positive transaction. Overall very good service. They paid the same as the internet price from the CarMax site. Just be aware that once you get an estimate on-line, you only have 7 days. They won't do the thorough inspection to give you a firm number unless it's clear that you're expecting to sell the car to them that day. It's just a different way of operating than expected, but it worked out for me, although I had to give up the car a couple of days before I would have preferred, which is why 4 stars instead of 5 stars. It's good to have this place available so that you don't have to go to the far reaches of the 'burbs to deal with CarMax (see my other review). They were nice and helpful, but the kid didn't know about any of the features on my Lexus RX, even though the sticker was in the window. He told me it had things it doesn't have, and unfortunately I bought it based on those features. For example, rain-sensing wipers, etc. Basically said it had the Comfort Package, with the above, and the fancy headlights. He was sure it had those features. But it doesn't. Be careful what they tell you, and explore the car thoroughly. read more

Very convenient and simple! I have decided to sell my vehicle, so I stopped by the Carmax vehicle sales center to get an appraisal. I checked in on the computer system (very simple), and waited about 10 min before an associate called my name. He asked me a few questions about the vehicle and then took my keys for about 15 min while he checked everything out and gave it a quick test drive. Got a fair wholesale price. I could have sold it to a private buyer and got more, but the no haste transaction made it worthwhile. I pay for the car it is in my name, i pay my payments by auto pay, I do not require a paper invoice. meantime my father , who is 88 years old receives the invoice and it confuses him, he phones me every month in questioning whether he should pay. I tired to get car max to stop sending, and they tell me it is not possible. I am so angry that none, including a supervisor was willing to make this happen. i think this says a lot about customer service, not being able to accommodate my request because the computer system is set up to do so. I sold my 11-month old auto to the Carmax Buying Center in Chamblee. The process went smoothly and everything seemed to go fine. They issued me a bank draft, which I deposited to my credit union. Three days later, I saw online the draft had been returned. I called Carmax and the guy on the phone said something about maybe their printer didn't print the signature or something. I drive out there and he handed me a hand-written draft. (Yet, on the phone he said if I wanted to be reimbursed for the bounced-check fees my bank charges for THEIR bad draft, I'd have to go to another Carmax location. Not good.) Crossing my fingers this draft goes through successfully. I don't want to have to get the law involved, but won't hesitate to do so. I searched online and see that this same thing has happened to others selling their cars to Carmax. Regardless, their nonchalant attitude and the fact that they gave me a bad check while having the title to my car means I will never deal with them again. They lost someone who might have been a future customer - and I will warn others. Seller beware. read more

I've only gone here to get estimates. I've never tried to actually sell my car to this location so my experience is fairly simple. Every time I've visited this satellite location, I've been in and out within 30 minutes. I take my quote and go. I do think they under value cars most times, but they can be a good starting point when needed. read more

My experience with this Carmax car buying center was awful. Total runaround in so many ways. Appraisal was fine, not great but fine. Then the fun started with the several admin clerks that paper the deal. Three different contacts with the several guys doing this there, one ahead of time by phone, and two in person visits. Each time, different instructions for how to handle out of state title and the required POA's. On the final day before I needed to fly back out of town, they changed the paperwork rules again. Very similar experience to what Heather P reported; the guy on each following day literally contradicts the instructions from the previous day. Paper clerk Arthur Ilyabayev the worst there. Avoid him at all costs. Worse than awful: corporate ought to shut this little out of control satellite office down before it harms their otherwise high profile corporate image any further. Worst customer service experience I have had in memory. Infuriating. Stay away and keep your car. read more

The staff was very efficient and professional. Their systems are set up to process an appraisal/purchase very quickly. You aren't going to get the best price you could get (so don't expect it), but you save yourself all the hassle and risk of selling to a private buyer or a dealership (especially if you aren't planning to trade in as part of a purchase).
