He is so passionate about his job and he wants you to get the best car for you, even if that means purchasing from a different CarMax. I've gotten a lot of new cars in my life, and we all know how obnoxious the salespeople are. It's just overall an exhausting experience that takes hours for some reason. I have had a good experience at CarMax previously getting a quote on a car I wanted to sell, and they gave me a fair price/offer so I decided when it was time, I'd go back - which brings us to last week. Definitely the lowest sales-pressure vehicle buying experience I've ever had. No pressure to buy a warranty, a more expensive car, etc. The person who helps you is pretty much the same from A through Z. Priya (our associate) helped us get in the cars for a test drive, apply for financing, etc. All while the business office and car folks outside were working diligently to get the car ready to go home. Everything was Docusign, and when the car was ready, they handed us a packet and keys and took our down payment. My only complaint (not worth docking stars): I gave them a third-party check from insurance, which needs to be signed to make payable to another party. I knew this and told them probably no less than 3 times that it wasn't yet signed, and did I need to sign it? But they didn't seem bothered and ultimately, they called me the next day to come out and physically sign it. So, pretty inconvenient because it was Saturday, 217 was closed, it was a PITA. I really hope to not have to buy a car again, ever - but here I thought that with my last car I totaled. If I do, I'll be sure to go to CarMax again. read more

Would not buy here again. I am actively telling everyone I know not to shop here. The vehicle had a low tire pressure light go off prior to test driving so the salesman quickly swapped the tire with another vehicle. Well, a few days after I took it home, the light went off again. They tried to tell me I had to use my warranty to replace it and settle for generic tires. I only purchased the car because the salesman assured me he fixed the 3 issues with the vehicle: a white substance smeared all over the seats, the tires, and the tire repair pump that goes in the trunk. Well, they attempted to force me to pay for the tires because I wanted the tires I paid for--4 brand new Yokohamas. Their service department talked down to me and explained that I'm ignorant and generic tires are the exact same as Yokohamas. Finally they agreed to upgrade for $100. If they're comparable why would I be paying an upgrade fee to have the tires I paid for? They changes the tire's begrudgingly after a lot of back and forth. Guess what's still wrong with the car? The light is still going off. Their service department is penny pinching, disrespectful, and incompetent. Do not buy from Carmax. Especially do not buy an extended warranty. They will refuse to fix any flaws existing at purchase with the vehicle and force you to pay your warranty deductible. When you need anything replaced you are going to get GENERIC parts. Like most I opted for Carmax because of the no haggle sales environment. I can buy shoes and clothes unseen, but not a vehicle, so venues like Carvana are out. Inventory was very low when we visited, which is typical for the entire used car industry. My least favorite buying experience is with cars; I'm generally not a fan of car salespeople. However, I liked our rep at Carmax, their business model reduces the typical cheese-ball sales verbiage. Drawbacks: 1. a lengthy process just to test drive. So be prepared to spend longer than usual if you're just kicking tires. 2. Vehicles are not prepped well, at least not as good as a certified pre-owned dealer. One vehicle had a dried blood stain on the seatbelt! If you prefer a no-haggle sales environment then opt for the Costco Auto Program, they're typically 7%-10% off MSRP. Alright, so my story doesn't start off great. Had an appointment to sell my car at 2:30 today. They didn't call me to tell me what they were going to give me until an hr later. When they tell me what they will give me they tell me it's going to be $2,500 less than what they originally said because they said I put premium trim when it wasn't. I told them IT FOR SURE IS PREMIUM TRIM, and the sales lady wasn't very sure of what she was talking about and so she basically said "this offer expires in 1 week". I call my husband and we're both frustrated and super angry because I've been here for an hour already and we are getting less than what we were told AND they told us whoever sold it to us basically charged us more for a trim that the car was not. I'm practically livid but we already went through all this trouble and have a car waiting for us we just need this money. I begrudgingly say yes. The same lady who wasn't super sure was like it will take another 30 minutes.... Well, I decide to do my own research through carfax and carfax says it's a limited trim... why would they say that trim unless it is a higher trim? I take this information to another sales person and am like "LOOK MY CAR SHOULD BE HIGHER VALUE!!" And the most amazing guy named Greg comes up and says "we'll honor this price, we checked it out again and is a premium". WELL YA, I TOLD YOU. So it's been 2 hours since I've been here, they wasted an hour of my time (I was expecting to only be here for 1 hr)... but despite this clusterfudge, even after saying we accept the lower price, Greg is a HOMIE and does a double check and research to see if what he said originally stood. It did not and they did me a solid and gave me $100 more than my original estimate. So yah, it started off kinda crappy, wasted time probably could have been avoided, but they did offer me the most out of all the places I tried to sell my car AND they told me that the transfer plate fee is way less than a brand new registration sooooo hallelujah, hallelujah saving MORE money! I had a really great experience here selling my car. I had previously tried to sell my car on Facebook, for what I thought was below market value with no takers (other than Auto Pro Buys which I do not recommend). I did an online appraisal, which came our higher than I had the car listed initially. Basically a few hundred dollars less than trade-in value if I were buying another car (which I wasn't). The offer was actually $3200 more than Auto Pro Buys offered me. The entire process took about 40 minutes, and the offer they quoted online was what I got. They even paid for my Lyft ride back home! This is a review of a larger dollar value Yelp transaction beyond our usual retail items. My philosophy of cars is that they will be more expensive to buy than you expect, more expensive to maintain than you expect, and will have less resale value than you expect. Finally they will break down at the most inopportune moment. All that has been learned from experience! It's all about the expectation. I had a low-in-miles for its third grade age family Toyota to sell. I was dreading the Craigslist/Marketplace private sales process. I've bought two that way and it was a great experience. And I've sold one that way, the process was fine but I had to expend time denying I was responsible for their photo speeding tickets because they never updated the DMV, until they needed a new registration sticker, over 9 months later. I had researched Blue Book, knew Carmax selling price ranges, and Craigslist prices. I knew in detail the cost of cosmetics. The offer process, after about 30 minutes in the queue, took about 30 minutes. The offer was high for my expectations, I already had private party interest at that price. I returned the next day for a short 30 minute process to do the paperwork and collect the check. The short waits, and great staff, all exceeded my expectations. They have WiFi, coffee and bottled water. The furniture is new and clean. It wasn't busy when I was there. Carmax is a well oiled scaleable wholesale-retail machine which challenges the used car lot experience and transparency. In fact, they confided that the car was probably destined for their monthly auction to those other dealers because it was not a younger car. When I have bought and sold privately, or obtained cars from family, they came with a full maintenance and checkup history. Carmax wasn't interested in that, though any future buyer should be. They did offer to shred it all for me, a nice gesture. So I guess cars are now like bodies at z-care, no medical history necessary. Evolution or devolution? With delays and my reservation expiring, led to my application disappearing. when I walked into carmax yesterday it was an unpleasant surprise. HOWEVER the first person to greet me ( Jeff ) helped me. His auto retail experience as well as his outstanding customer service SKILLS allowed me to drive off the lot in my dream car. It was very easy and straightforward, we were able to upload our documents the day before so they could check them, and we got an email telling us exactly what we needed to do when we came in. We got an offer from Carmax first, but then some dealerships said they wanted to offer more than Carmax would, so I took it to two dealerships but I should have known better--they nitpicked and made horrible offers. I think they assume that once they have you in their office you'll give in because you've already gone to that trouble? I'm not sure what their logic is, but it just made me more happy to have the Carmax option. One experience was 5 star and my send was terrible. Both were due to personnel. The 2nd time I waited for 90 minutes while papers were processed. That could have been okay IF the employees had told me it would take that long. Instead they kept saying it would be just a few minutes. Meanwhile my 79yr old Mother was waiting in the parking lot. Wow. I must say, this was the best and easiest car buying experience I ever had. I knew the car I wanted, and carmax had one 200 miles away. I called my local carmax, and Clayton Smith randomly answered. He was wonderful. He took the info for the car (inventory number) and gave me the lowdown on the process. As I'm talking to him, I short circuited the process a bit, and started the application for the loan. He dealt with the system, that would randomly assign it to a sales person, but he was able to grab it! He then broke the bad news, that carmax says it takes a week to ship the car... And this brings up the good and bad about carmax. The bad, there is zero wiggle room to the process. The good news, there is zero wiggle room for a bad sales guy to screw you over with. They have it down to a science!! For me, with the car I picked, it wasn't an issue. But there was no expiditing the car, you are in the system... Then surprisingly it took only 3 days. Reserved on Tuesday night, shipped Wednesday, arrived Thursday! But.. The system stepped in. I couldn't get there Thursday night, because they have to put it into the Beaverton inventory... I made an appointment for Friday afternoon... From the time I arrived, and met Clayton in person for the first time, I test drove the car, did the paperwork for purchase and financing, had the car dealer prepped, and drove off within one hour! On 6/28/2020 we found 2013 Prius at this location and were replacing a vehicle we had sold We went thru all the pre approvals and moved forward with the purchase and scheduled a time to come in..4pm we arrived and viewed the vehicle and were pretty disappointed in the condition and non working locking/unlocking passenger door and extreme paint overspray on all rubber trim surrounding doors and windows from what looks like the roof being repainted..Interior was also filthy with dirt in many cracks The price was key and if they would repair these item I was still interested in buying the vehicle as it seems to drive ok on test drive We agreed to purchase and a repair order was filled out with all issues needing to be repaired and was promised to be fixed Being Sunday we elected to leave the vehicle here so that they could work on it ASAP Was called 2 days later saying the part for the door was in and it would be completed the following day (Wednesday) Got a call saying door was fixed but no overspray was able to be removed and that it was to their "Standards" After being transferred to a manager named" Celine" We really hope nobody ever has to speak with her because she attempts to make you feel stupid and that you've done something wrong She first tell me no repair order was filled out then magically it was and that they guarantee they will get it done by Thursday... Excellent experience start to finish. Made an appointment day before for appraisal/test drive and ended up making a purchase. Brought my old Civic with nearly 200k miles in, Joseph was my appraiser. Was friendly, fast and efficient. Darren Meredith was my sales guy. Have a few horror stories from past experiences in buying cars and my CarMax experience was phenomenal. Darren was professional, kind, really listened to what I was looking for and respected my budget constraints. He took the time to explain things (even though I know he's had to do it a million times before) and never seemed annoyed or put out. Appreciated the Covid precautions they've taken - distance between sales people and customers, hand sanitizer, masks, sanitizing vehicles and solo test drives. I felt safe being there and really appreciated the opportunity to take the cars out alone to drive them. I've looked around at similar vehicles for sale and think I got a fair price based on mileage and condition, also opted for optional extended warranty for some added peace of mind. Folks, we need to be really honest. CarMax is NOT five stars. It might be if you're coming in with cash, or your own financing. I acknowledge all of the above. What I'm saying though is, you are the exception with regards to car buying. The 'normal' car buyer is a person, gal or guy, who goes to the dealership expecting an all-in-one transaction, including getting financing coordinated, because in the majority of dealerships they're going to run your credit anyway. Here's what's good about CarMax: The no-haggle pricing is legit. There's no price pressure. The sales reps don't 'hawk' around you trying to get you to buy a car. You can even walk the lot on your own, unattended and nobody will bother you. An employee might ask if you see anything you like, but that's about it. Everyone...EVERYONE...is polite, helpful and willing to take accountability when things don't work out as expected. Didn't even need to bring proof of income or any other paperwork besides registration and your DL. Now, here's where they go wrong. And 100% of this is what they call the "Business Office". - Too much "one more thing". Meaning when your sales rep goes to do the process, they get told they need "one more thing". It happened at least 5 times. Silly things like amounts not translating or the drivers license not scanned exactly or missing paperwork or down systems or "waiting on manager" or incorrect down payments, etc. One after another. - Too much role sprawl. Each person apparently does a different 'thing', so no one person has the complete answer. "I only do registration, I don't do financing" "I only do financing, I don't do appraisal", etc etc. The sales rep is often out of the loop because of this disconnect. - They push back when there's not perfection but want you to accommodate them. IN my case, I had talked to them before going up there and asked them if they had a way to verify registration without the paper since it was in the mail to me; they said yes. Get there, the system is down. So why not just do the deal and compel me to forward the registration when I get it or verify when the system is back up rather than having me make two trips? It's not my fault the system is down. - Too much inefficiency with the paper process. They print forms for you to sign then proceed to scan them into the computer. Uh...why not just use DIGITAL SIGNATURES? And they duplicate sign forms "in case one gets damaged or lost" - why are you allowing that to happen in the first place?? - Despite having filled out an app online the sales rep had to re-key it in for the finance portion. Why is it not flowing fully over to them? It's not that I didn't like CarMax. It was certainly better than traditional dealer experiences and they did give me more for my trade than others offered. But that Business Office is rife with waste and inefficiency. If they would fix that this could be a gamechanger for real. read more

I was helping a friend buy a used Toyota Camry, they needed a ride to test drive the car. My friend had an appointment but had to wait 30 minutes and had paid $99 to have the vehicle transferred to Oregon. Things got worse from there. The salesperson attempted to upsell a Mazda that was more expensive and gave my friend considerable pressure. My friend had a pre-approved loan and was asked multiple times to use the Car Max financing options. I believe they must be getting a kick back or something because I recently helped someone refinance a car loan that they got at CarMax that had an outrageous interest rate. When I say outrageous it was more than 20% and had nothing to do with the individual's credit. They were young and naïve. I was able to help get the loan refinanced down to 4.5%. This is predatory behavior in my perspective. Back to the original story of my friend and the pre-approved financing. The CarMax employee would not do anything at all, and the car could not be purchased on day one. Now I am helping my friend drive back a second day. I would have advised them against buying a car there because of the negative and frankly lazy behavior but their old care was beyond repair, and they needed this Camry. The Salesperson would not fax anything to the credit union and would not come back in for day two and said something about they don't get up early for anything. They also said if the purchase was not complete in 24 hours, they would not hold the car and the $99 transfer fee was forfeit. That was not disclosed, and it is very frustrating since the financing was ready, but the company wouldn't use a prominent credit union. My final notes are that this company has a convenient website and what looks like a good business model from a distance. The reality is business practices that are definitely not in the best interest of their customer. I would posit that the practices are arguably unethical and not based on the greater good but on greed. I guess they do not need return customers in these large urban areas. I would never buy a car from them after my customer service observations. The current car shortage made this purchase a necessity for my friend. CarMax in Beaverton is pushy and unprofessional. I have no desire to do business with someone that thinks 10 am is too early to show up to sell a car or is trying to flim-flam it's customers on financing. Stay away from CarMax. read more

They gave us double the "fair market trade" on Kelley Blue Book. We had very low expectations and were blown away. Appraisal took 30 min and I had an offer (good for one week) in hand and left. We took a few days to find the EXACT car we wanted. It ended up being elsewhere (at another dealership) so we only ended up selling our car to Carmax-not buying. They never for one second pressured me or even suggested a different car. I had a check in my hand the second visit which lasted less than 30 min. The good things I heard about Carmax seemed too good to be true but I'm so glad we went there. Then we were able to take that cash and put it down on a car elsewhere--the type of place that would rather have a cash down payment than a trade in. Carmax screwed me and sold me a 3 year old car with multiple expensive problems. I'm not sure how a 3 year old car could be this screwed up, but here I am replacing the alternator on a nearly new car. They sold me a car with two bad tires. Carmax is so cheap that they only replaced two of the four tires on the car. Telling me I was SAFE to drive away. Well no I wasn't!! Two of the tires were screwed up and if you went above 45MPH the car starts to violently shake! Woohoo! Just what I want from my new 3 year old car!! Thanks carmax! And when I confronted the salesman he directed me to someone else, who directed me to someone else, and so on, until I finally snapped and told them if they didn't fix it I would return the car. After my outburst the tires were swapped and the car drove fine. But the fact that they're so cheap they didn't do it in the first place is appalling. Customer safety is not their priority. When I bought it they said oh "you get a full tank of gas!" When I asked why the tank only had 3/4 they said it might still be adjusting and that it was definitely full, they just filled it. Come to find a few days later the tank WILL NOT FILL past 3/4 tank. Some kid at the gas station tells me it's probably a sensor that got screwed up from someone siphoning gas. Awesome just what I need with a new car. Thanks carmax!!! When I drove it to the beach it overheated and I had to spend $400 having it fixed ruining my vacation and sending me home early and out $400. Thanks carmax!!! The trunk latch is broken. You have to push in then pull out, and even then sometimes it doesn't work. Thanks carmax!!! the driver seatbelt won't retract, and kinda just flops around after you take it off. Thanks carmax!!! The car was never cleaned properly before I bought it! Thanks carmax!!! Obviously a lot of this is on me for not more thoroughly checking the car. But I was in desperate need of a car and couldn't afford to play the haggle back and forth game. I went online to get a quote for a payoff for my car, it took less than 5 minutes to get a quote. I then set up an appointment for the next day to have carmax look at. Wow, I was very impressed with CarMax. Before I went in, I used their website to get an initial "offer letter" of $7300. I was already happy with it because the dealer's trade-in was $5500. So I took my car in and they did the visual check and the guy came with the paper and said "Would you take $8000 instead?" WOW... that was unexpected!! Two days later (today), I took my car in, they did the test drive and came to me with the check of exact amount the offer letter said. I just signed some paper work and done! It was so simple and straight forward. No negotiation! This is how the car selling should be! I just wish they sell new cars. I would have bought it from them. First let me start by saying I just purchased from CarMax in Vancouver a year ago and was super happy. My husband wanted a truck so I pre did everything online and came in to purchase a dodge ram. We got there and when they went to get it it had mold in the cab. We asked if there were any other 4x4 trucks and the sales rep said no. I went to my phone while being over with kids in the kids corner and found a Chevy Silverado the sales rep just said didn't have 4x4 and told my husband it did have it. At this point I was a little irritated I had to drive over all the was from Ridgefield wa and this sales rep had no interest in helping find something. My husband test drove and loved so we purchased. 2 days after purchasing we had to have it towed cause the battery was unresponsive. Ugh. Ended up having to buy a new battery but hey all good. We received the transfer papers and check to take to register. They told us it may be a few dollars off (me thinking a few is $20ish) no it was $482 !!!! Spoke to James the sales manager and they said well sorry but it's estimated. Nothing they can do. Yea we can return it but my husband likes it. Our financing is already in place.
