The Service:
We stopped for food here on Easter Saturday. The surly barman was clearly not interested in severing food. His attention was elsewhere. He told us to pick a table and he would be with us in 1 minute. Ten minutes later I had to go to the bar to order food as he was clearly not going to come to us. It felt like we were interpreting his day. I ordered food and drinks at the bar and headed out to my car to get an item for my wife. My 9 months pregnant wife asked him for help to move tables while I was gone and he ignored her. The drinks arrived and there were clearly lipstick marks on the glass presented to my wife. I returned the drink to the bar and the same barman decided to debate whether or not it was lipstick marks on the glass of coke. I had to convince him to swap it out. Obviously in his mind the customer is never right.
The Food:
I order burgers for both of us. The presentation was beautiful. I am not a fan of serving food on bread boards, but it did suit this meal. However, the beef tasted off. It was grey, bland and unediable. It ranks up there with the worst burgers I have ever eaten. I even question whether is was even beef. After a bite or two I just could not stomach it. At over 15 euros each, it was a terrible waste of money. We could have sent them back, but I really didn't feel like dealing with the same ignorant barman again.
Conclusion:
I paid the bill of over 46 euros, for 2 burgers, a rock shandy and a pint of coke. I mentioned my concerns to the duty manager on the way out the door. He shrugged his shoulders. I guess his lack of english didn't help. I expect more from a 4 star hotel, but am not surprised. This is the level of service that Irish hotels throw up and expect people to pay top dollar for it. I am not surprised that this hotel is in receivership. http://www.irishexaminer.com/ireland/carlton-hotel-kinsale-in-receivership-208939.html
