Always with a smile, Carlos is usually there to greet and attend to your order. I asked him once how early he is up to make the donuts, and 3:30AM was his reply. Get there early because your favorites will sell out quickly. My very special favorite is his Apple Fritter. Not only delicious, these Apple Fritters are almost as big around as a dinner plate. Carlos Donuts is the best place to get donuts in Tehachapi, and compared to a lot of places I have tried can't compare to Carlos. Carlos' Donuts is just a great little shop run by a great guy who loves Tehachapi and and you'd be hard pressed to find a whole bunch of other folks who are long term Tehachapi that do not have a great story about Carlos himself, his shop and/or his donuts. He and his little neighborhood shop are a hometown institution and deservedly so. Go there just once and you are not smiled at, welcomed and engaged in at least one conversation with staff and fellow customers it's probably because you keep your head down, and that's ok if that's what you prefer but you'd still be surrounded by generally kind and delightful people, and then you'll get some pretty great breakfast treats for very fair prices to boot. Furthermore, if you are so inclined, look in the back when Carlos looks up from what he's doing to see you, you are guaranteed a sincerity joyous and friendly, grateful smile and wave. Showed up on a Saturday morning and saw many people walking out with boxes of donuts. That's always a good sign. Walked inside and at 9am on a Saturday all the shelves were stocked full. Bought 3 donuts, 1 for me and 2 for my kids. Took one bite and immediately knew why people were buying these donuts by the box. The dough is perfect. It's light, moist and not greasy. Mediocre donuts at best. I have tried apple fritters from a hundred different places. And I have to say the apple fritter at this place was a joke. 3. Count them. 3. Pieces of apple. How is that even called an apple fritter. They are the size of a dinner plate with 3 tiny pieces of apple. We also ordered one of pretty much everything else. I saw at least 20 cockroaches all over the place. I told the worker and he said "oh yeah don't worry about them they're our little friends". I got my usual Lemon Powdered and Chocolate Frosted Filled. The donuts are bigger than most donuts shops. Back where I live they don't put much filling it, it is enough for two bites and usually at the end/beginning of the donuts. This place has lots of filling in the donuts as well which is a huge plus in my book and instead of the shops that inject the filling from the side so when you bite into them it squirts out, they do it from the top. The lemon is has an extra kick of tartness, love that and has lots of powdered sugar on top. The donuts taste very fresh too. I know I came in there later but they still taste fresh like the oil that they cook it in isn't old or maybe it is his recipe but haven't tasted one that good in a long time. Without a doubt the best Donut shop. When I visit my brother-in-law in Tehachapi, I tell him to get me some donuts before I arrive. He also brings them to me since I live in Porterville. I am leaving this review since I've put it off for too long. This place deserves it plus it's great to support a local business. I am not from Tehachapi, CA but come on occasion to visit a friend. Their donuts here are fantastic! They're mostly fresh. The only oddity from this place is the hours they're open so they could close really early. At the least, they open early enough so you can come here to get donuts to bring to work. I just had some from my coworker who stopped here in the morning before her carpool. I have tried the dunkin donuts that recently opened and their donuts are not fresh. The breading is miles behind Carlos's Donuts!
